Battle Spot Singles C&C Index

If you are new to C&C and analysis writing standards, read these before posting:

Battle Spot is finally getting analyses! This is where you reserve the Battle Spot analyses. Currently, we will be focusing on Battle Spot Singles, because it has the largest userbase of any cartridge metagame. However, in the future, Triples and Rotations will also be covered once they can form a quality control team.

Make sure you read the rules before you reserve!

All analyses must be approved by the Battle Spot quality control team.

Reservation Rules
  • If you are a badgeholder, you can reserve up to two Pokemon at one time. If you are not, you can reserve up to one Pokemon at a time.
  • Additional reservations cannot be made until your current analyses are posted and in the written stage.
  • Pokemon with a (BH) attached to it can only be reserved by badgeholders. Again, this is to ensure the critically important threats are in reliable hands for quality purposes. Pokemon without (BH) are open to anyone, badged or not.
  • Additionally, if you are proven to be a high level battler, you may be able to reserve these Pokemon. Generally, the best piece of proof is to PM the QC people screenshots of a high ranking on the battle spot ladder on the 3DS games.
  • Post in this thread with your analysis reservations. Pay attention to the posts in front of you in case the list is not updated.
  • Do not edit your posts in this thread. Double post if you wish to unreserve your Pokemon or select another one instead.
  • Do not reserve analyses if you do not have extensive knowledge and experience with the Pokemon at hand and the metagame. If either of these issues become evident, the analysis may be reassigned.
  • If you want to reserve a Pokemon that isn't on the reservation list, provide proof as to why this Pokemon should get an analysis. Replay codes from your 3DS and sound arguments are more likely to sway us than stuff like "Pikachu gets Volt Tackle".
None yet!

Analysis Thread Tags
  • When you post your thread, be sure to use the appropriate tags for each stage of the analysis:
    • WIP - Work in Progress: The skeleton is incomplete and is not ready for the QC Team to evaluate. Keep in mind that the longer your analysis stays in WIP stage, the greater the chance of it being reassigned. Do not be lazy.
    • Quality Control - Quality Control Ready: In the thread title, include [QC 0/2]. Include (Revamp) or (Set Name) if the analysis falls under either of those categories. The format is Name (Revamp/Set Name if applicable) [QC 0/2]. The skeleton is complete in bullet point form and now needs to seek approval by the QC Team. Make sure you update the thread title with the number of QC checks you currently have. ONLY WHEN YOU REACH ONE QC APPROVAL MAY YOU BEGIN WRITING THE ANALYSIS IN PARAGRAPH FORM, OTHERWISE THE ANALYSIS REMAINS IN BULLET POINTS. YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE THE SECOND QC CHECK UNTIL THE ANALYSIS IS WRITTEN.
    • Copyediting - Grammar-Prose Ready: In the set title, remove [QC 2/2] and include [GP 0/2]. The two required QC approvals have been met. The Grammar-Prose team now takes over.When you are ready for a GP check, please post in the Grammar-Prose Queue with a link to your analysis.
    • Done: After the analysis gets two GP stamps, the analysis is ready for upload.
  • Be sure to update your thread's tags and stamp number as you move along the process.
Reservation List

After reserving a Pokemon, you must post your analysis in a timely fashion. Your analysis thread must be up in 72 hours (3 days) or your reservation will be dropped. If you have any extenuating circumstances that prevent you from getting up your thread within this time frame, notify cant say or Hulavuta

  • Unreserved: The Pokemon has yet to be claimed by someone.
  • Reserved: The Pokemon is claimed by someone.
  • WIP: The Pokemon has been posted, but isn't ready for QC checks yet.
  • Skeleton: The Pokemon's analysis skeleton has been posted and is going through the process.
  • Rough Draft: This Pokemon's analysis has a complete write up, waiting for a final QC check and/or grammar related nitpicks.

Battle Spot Doubles C&C Index

If you are new to C&C and analysis writing standards, read these before posting:

Thanks to VGC last year, we have a TON of Battle Spot Doubles analyses! However, we got some stuff that could use some brushing up, so I think we still got some work to do!

Make sure you read the rules before you reserve!

Pokemon that need revamps

  • Landorus-T - Sets should be something like: Choice Scarf, Assault Vest, Offensive (Life Orb/Choice Band). (BH)
  • Kangaskhan - Power-Up Punch and All-Out Attacker split. Bulky Attacker removed, add bulky EVs to AO set. (BH)
  • Gardevoir - Trick Room is Gardevoir's best set and it's not even mentioned. Remove Choice Specs set. (BH)
  • Heatran - Full revamp (BH)
  • Cresselia - Calm Mind set (BH)
  • Milotic - Usage changed notably since beginning of VGC'15. Needs lots of small tweaks (ex. Maranga Berry).
  • Rotom-W - Bulky set needs significant changes. Possibly add Choice set as well.
  • Azumarill - Perish Song set removed, Assault Vest set needs to be added. Other sets need notable padding.
  • Ludicolo - Full Revamp
  • Charizard (Mega Charizard X set)
  • Conkeldurr (Life Orb set)

Battle Spot Triples C&C Index

If you are new to C&C and analysis writing standards, read these before posting:

Welcome Smogoners, I have some great news: As of today, we are starting Battle Spot Triples analyses!

Now you may be thinking "But Theorymon, how is that going to work? Battle Spot Triples doesn't exactly have a big userbase on Smogon."

That's a good question, but thankfully, thanks to how Triples works, there's a handy way to get around the userbase problem!

Because Battle Spot Triples has a lot of similarities to Battle Spot Doubles / VGC, we will be basing the majority of Battle Spot Triples analyses on the already done VGC analyses! Thanks for the hard work VGC people, you managed to make covering another battle spot metagame feasible!

Of course, for the many analyses that will be based on their VGC counterparts, they will have to be done differently than the usual analysis! Let's have a gander at what to do!
The Skeleton

Since the VGC writer has already done a lot of the work needed for the Triples analysis, most skeletons work a lot differently here!

-For a Skeleton for a Pokemon that has a usable VGC analysis, you'll need to copy + paste the entire VGC analysis in here, and format it here like the usual analysis.

-Sorry, but you'll need to make a skeleton for a totally new overview. VGC and Triples have a lot of similarties, but they're still different metagames! This is the perfect place to talk about a Pokemon's place in Triples compared to VGC too.

-The meat on the bones of the skeleton is simple: Under neat each section, you'll have a new, bold lettered note styled section called "Changes". You'll just list what modifications you'll make to that section to make them fit better with the Triples metagame, if any!

Below is an example of how I did this with Themantyke's VGC Clefairy analysis.

[OVERVIEW]

-Friend Guard is awesome and lets your other two mons take hits better, making them more dangerous!

-Follow Me support is valuable, and typing makes it resist important placement ignoring moves such as Dark Pulse Aura Sphere and immune to Dragon Pulse, which is great for redirection.

-Eviolite is cool with item clause

-Other cool support moves in Snatch and Heal Pulse

-Very passive Pokemon, will do little damage

-Total Taunt bait

-Can get overloaded fast if in the middle

[SET]
name: Follow Me
move 1: Follow Me
move 2: Helping Hand
move 3: Protect
move 4: Snatch / Heal Pulse / Icy Wind / Moonblast
item: Eviolite
ability: Friend Guard
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 172 Def / 80 SpD / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Follow Me lets Clefairy redirect and tank hits for its partner. Helping Hand lets Clefairy boost its partner's offenses and makes up somewhat for its bad offenses. Moonblast is Clefairy's strongest and most reliable attack, while Icy Wind is a much weaker attack that provides speed control. Protect shields Clefairy for a turn.

Changes

-Protect in slot 3 because of Clefairy's last support option

-Snatch is first slash in because it steals Quick Guard and Wide Guard, broadening your teams offensive options.

-Heal Pulse can heal any of your partners no matter what position they are in, which can be prettty useful!

-Moonblast is the last option, as Icy Wind's speed control tends to be more useful than Moonblast in triples.

Set Details
========

Friend Guard is the main reason to use Clefairy over Clefable or Togekiss. The ability reduces the damage Clefairy's partner Pokemon receives making Clefairy's partner very hard to deal with. 252 HP / 172 Def lets Clefairy always survive Adamant maximum Attack Mega Kangaskhan's Double-Edge. The Special Attack investment allows Clefairy's Moonblast to OHKO 4 SpD Hydreigon 100% of the time. If using Icy Wind, move the Special Attack EVs to Special Defense.

Changes

-20 extra SpD since Moonblast is no longer first slash in.

-Will still mention the orginal EV spread for use with Moonblast.

-Replacing the Clefable mention with Amoonguss, who is much more common.

Usage Tips
========

Follow Me is used to protect Clefairy's partner from attacks, and Helping Hand is used occasionally to boost the partner's offenses. Don't be afraid to let Clefairy go down if it's taking a lot of nasty hits. It's better for Clefairy to do its job for a little while than sit around and not do anything later on.

Changes

-Paragraph about positioning. Putting Clefairy in the middle is tempting, but facing 3 hits in one turn cuz of follow me can easily overwhlem Clefairy early in the game, so putting it on the left or right side is often preferable. If abusing Follow Me for the match, make sure the middle Pokemon benefits from Helping Hand, as it wont reach the far away mon.

-If Follow Meing isnt super important to you early game, Clefairy can get away with being in the middle though. This allows it to helping hand either partner, and it can attempt to stall with Protect and get rid of guards with Snatch.

Team Options
========

Pokemon that can set up with Substitute or boosting moves, such as Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Metagross, Mega Salamence, Swords Dance Terrakion, Nasty Plot Thundurus, and Heatran are all great partners. Tailwind and Trick Room users such as Suicune and Jellicent greatly appreciate Follow Me's redirectional support and Friend Guard's Defensive boost. Pokemon that can take out Steel-types, such as Heatran and Mega Charizard Y, are also good partners. Dragon-types such as Hydreigon and Steel-types such as Aegislash and Heatran naturally compliment Clefairy. A rule of thumb when using Clefairy is to make sure that its partner is able to make up for Clefairy's extreme lack of offensive presence.

Changes

-Will add Snatch support mentions. Great for mons that hate the guard moves such as Sylveon, Mega Charizard Y, and Talonflame.

-Clefairy can attract move that ignore placement, and thanks to resisitng all of them but Flying moves, its a great partner for Pokemon weak to Dark Pulse, Aura Sphere, and Dragon Pulse. mons: Hydreigon, Bisharp, Mega Salamence, Aegislash, Hariyama, Mega Metagross

-Change partner to partners :P

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Thunder Wave provides Clefairy with an alternate method of speed control. Moonlight can be used to keep Clefairy healthy longer. Heal Pulse and Aromatherapy allow Clefairy to further support its partner, though both moves are fairly situational. Tickle and Fake Tears can be used to help soften up the opponent's team, but Clefairy is very slow and usually can't use either of these moves before its partner gets the chance to move. Clefairy is one of the most viable users of Gravity, if that interests you.

Changes

-Remove mention of Heal Pulse since that got kicked up stairs.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Taunt**: Taunt reduces Clefairy's usefulness severely. Taunt users to be wary of include Thundurus and Gengar.

**Strong Steel- and Poison-type Attacks**: Mega Mawile can OHKO Clefairy regardless of defensive investment. Aegislash can 2HKO Clefairy with Flash Cannon. Bisharp's Iron Head will always 2HKO Clefairy, and Life Orb sets even have a chance to OHKO.

Changes

-Adding a mention of ganging up on Clefairy. Yes you can do this in dobules, but it works especially well here since Clefairy is often seen in the middle, and you have 3 Pokemon instead of 2.

Once you're done with the skeleton and QC approves it, its time to get writing! This is mostly similar to the usual analysis writing, except for two key aspects. The first thing is that we want you to bold your new writing, as this makes the lives of QC and GP easier. Secondly, try to maintain the same tone as the original analysis if possible, so the new stuff won't look like it was stitched in like some weird analysis Frakenstien's monster!

Below is an example of how you would post a completed analysis. Ignore the not so great grammar fo now, this is just an example :P

[OVERVIEW]

Clefairy may seem like a strange option compared to other more common redirection Pokemon such as Amoonguss and Togekiss, since its stats aren't very good. However, Clefairy has an ace up its sleeve in the form of Friend Guard, which allows it to boost the defenses of you're other two Pokemon by 33%. Follow Me support in general is great at redirecting important placement ignoring moves such as Dark Pulse, Aura Sphere, and Dragon Pulse, but Clefairy has other useful support moves such as Snatch and Heal Pulse. Eviolite also does a decent job of making Clefairy bulky, while stepping around the item clause.

Unfortunately, Clefairy is also massively weak to Taunt: as soon as it gets taunted, Clefairy is forced to struggle or use weak attacks such as Icy Wind or Moonblast. Clefairy in general relies on its other two partners for offense, and because of its redirection based nature and mediocre defenses, its very easy for Clefairy to get KOed early if you place Clefairy in the middle of your team. Overall, Clefairy is a niche Pokemon, but it's amazing support abilities make it well worth consideration for any triples team.

[SET]

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Follow Me lets Clefairy redirect and tank hits for its partner. Helping Hand lets Clefairy boost its partner's offenses and makes up somewhat for its bad offenses. The last slot for Clefairy can be a bit tricky to choose, as it has plenty of viable options. Snatch is an excellent support move, stealing Wide Guard and Quick Guard for your more offensive teammates. Heal Pulse on the other hand, allows Clefairy to give its teammates a second chance at life. Icy Wind is rather weak, but gives non Trick Room based teams another shot at speed control, while Moonblast is Clefairy's strongest and most reliable attack.

Set Details
========

Friend Guard is the main reason to use Clefairy over Amoonguss or Togekiss. The ability reduces the damage Clefairy's partner Pokemon receives making Clefairy's partner very hard to deal with. 252 HP / 172 Def lets Clefairy always survive Adamant maximum Attack Mega Kangaskhan's Double-Edge, while the rest of the EVs are put in Special Defense for maximum Special tanking power. If your team is especially worried by Hydreigon, you can invest in 20 Special Attack EVs, which allows Clefairy to OHKO Hydreigon with Moonblast.

Usage Tips
========

Positioning is an especially important aspect of Clefairy in Battle Spot Triples. It may be tempting to place Clefairy in the middle to make maximum use of Follow Me, but be warned: Getting hit by 3 attacks will often knock out Clefairy, meaning you lost your Friend Guard support in one turn. To make best use of Friend Guard and Follow Me, you'll usually want Clefairy on either the left or right side of your team. Just make sure that the Pokemon in the middle benefits from Clefairy's Helping Hand.

If you find that Clefairy's usefulness is going down, are late in the game, or just feel that Clefairy has one particularly good shot of shifting the match's momentum to your favor, this is when sending out Clefairy to the middle can be a good choice. This allows Clefairy to use Helping Hand on either partner, and target any Pokemon with Snatch. Since this makes Clefairy a big target, using Protect to delay attempts to KO Clefairy is especially useful when in the middle.

Team Options
========

Since Clefairy has access to Snatch, Pokemon that heavily dislike Wide Guard and Quick Guard such as Sylveon, Mega Charizard Y, Talonflame, and Hitmontop are great teammates. Pokemon that can take out Steel-types, such as Heatran and Mega Charizard Y, are also good partners. Dragon-types such as Hydreigon and Steel-types such as Aegislash and Heatran naturally compliment Clefairy. A rule of thumb when using Clefairy is to make sure that its partners are able to make up for Clefairy's extreme lack of offensive presence.

An important aspect of Clefairy's Follow Me support is that it will redirect placement ignoring moves such as Brave Bird, Dark Pulse, Aura Sphere, and Dragon Pulse. This makes Pokemon such as Hydreigon, Bisharp, Aegislash, Hariyama, Mega Salamence, Mega Kangaskhan, and Mega Metagross great partners to avoid their weaknesses to these moves.

**Strong Offensive Presence**: Clefairy isn't particularly bulky, especially if its located in the middle of the team, so ganging up on it with 2 Pokemon can cut its life short. Just watch out for predictions with Protect.

With that out of the way, lets get to the usual reservation rules!

Reservation Rules
  • If you are a badgeholder, you can reserve up to two Pokemon at one time. If you are not, you can reserve up to one Pokemon at a time.
  • If you are doing a "VGC conversion" analysis, you may reserve up to two of them at a time, or three if you are a badgeholder.

Talonflame is up. It's in paragraph form since I was working on it before this subforum came to be, so apologies in advance.

I finished my bisharp analysis, i would like to reserve rotom-h
After looking at your Bisharp analyses, there are a lot of things that needs to be fixed before you can reserve Rotom-H. Your analyses should be undergoing the copyediting phase before you can take another Pokemon. In other words, Grammar Prose ( GP phase). In the meantime, you'll have to wait for the Battle Spot QC members to check your Bisharp first.

Ok I finally got the chance to update the reservation list! Some things were added.

Raikou and Conkeldurr are up for grabs for anyone since the original writers won't be able to complete them
