Blisteringly hot deserts: A DW warstory

alphatron

Volt turn in every tier! I'm in despair!
Hey there. I've been on smogon for a little while and I decided it was about time I posted a war story. This may not have been my greatest battle, and it's a battle from when I first began playing on PO, but at least it's something. It was either this or an 85 turn war story of rain stall that probably would have bored you all to tears. So I'm gonna post something different instead.

This was a battle I had with MajorGambit on PO's server a while back. His team will be posted at the end.

Battle between MajorGambit and Alphatron started!

Alphatron sent out Donphan!
MajorGambit sent out Erufuun!

Oh boy. I didn't think anyone would still lead with Erufuun. Well, I'm definitely going to be taunted, so I might as well switch to Ninetales now and at least get the sun rolling.

Start of turn 1
Alphatron called Donphan back!
Alphatron sent out Ninetales!

Ninetales is floating on a balloon!
Ninetales's Drought intensified the sun's rays!
The foe's Erufuun used Taunt!
Ninetales fell for the taunt!

The sunlight is strong!

Neener neener neener!

Excellent. That went exactly as planned. Keeping Ninetales in is risky if he has a tyranitar or shandera. But I don't want to overpredict and allow this thing to set up a substitute on me. So I'll fire off a flamethrower and see what it does. If it subs, I'll at least break the sub and keep it from trying anything. While subseeding isn't a problem for me, stun spore will cripple Venusaur if I switch him in and Meganium will just get taunted.

Protect? Well, I'll fire off another flamethrower. I was thinking of using energy ball, but once again, I didn't want to overpredict and wind up failing.

Start of turn 3
MajorGambit called Erufuun back!
MajorGambit sent out Burungeru!

Ninetales used Flamethrower!
It's not very effective...
The foe's Burungeru lost 17% of its health!

The pringles jellyfish shows its face! Well, little happened aside from me getting lucky with a burn. Not that burungeru cares about being burned anyway. Let's use protect and see what it does!

Start of turn 4

Looks like he doesn't have shadow ball. But now it's time to disable boil over if he uses it again. Even if he uses Ice Beam, the damage will wind up being pathetic. I'll lose the balloon in the process but I doubt I'll be needing it.

Start of turn 5
Ninetales used Disable!

Looks like I was right. I don't want to pull any wasteful switches yet though. And the damage is piling up on burungeru. Perhaps he'll see an energy ball coming and will try to switch out. I'll flamethrower the switch.

Start of turn 6
Ninetales used Flamethrower!

Following the words of Masahiro Sakurai...

...That was a critical hit? No wonder I ditched both flamethrower and energy ball on Ninetales on nearly all of my offensive sun teams. That was pathetic! Well, the hax didn't matter due to him recovering it off. So far, this battle is more boring than the final 30 turns or so of Parasect vs. Proygon2 from that warstory I chose not to post. He's probably going to try and stall me out with recover, so I'm switching out.

Start of turn 8
Alphatron called Ninetales back!
Alphatron sent out Goruggo!

The foe's Burungeru used Recover!
The foe's Burungeru regained health!

The sunlight is strong!
The foe's Burungeru is hurt by its burn!
The foe's Burungeru is no longer disabled!

100%
vs. 87%

I'll be honest. The only reason I switched in Goruggo to begin with was because Boil Over was disabled. But this is what I get for screwing around with Ninetales. I'll just have to hope that I don't get burned. The Goruggo set I run is pretty much the rock polish one with some slightly altered Evs. If anything, it is supposed to function as an offensive spin blocker. One that loses its water weakness in the sun, doesn't lose to Starmie, and kills enemy Tyranitars who think they can pursuit him. Even though I'm running No guard, a shadow punch or two should do the trick.

Two shadow punches indeed and some progress has been made. Now that I'm looking at a hippowdon, I can assume that my opponent is running Doryuzuu. Because even when you're running sand stall, you're running Doryuzuu. I'll have to keep rocks off the field and keep Tales alive. But before I switch to Donphan, let's pull a Machamp for just a second.

Could honestly care less

I'm gonna go off on a little story here. In 4th gen, when everyone valued stealth rock enough to sacrifice an entire pokemon for nothing more than to get it onto the field, I once joked about Stealth rock being the best move in the game. I even went on to say that a pokemon who set up SR as its ability would be banned from standard simply for being too good. Those jokes and this next turn are going to bite me in the ass. Hard.

Start of turn 13

Contrary to real world belief, is larger than an elephant

No problem, right? I spin away rocks because I assumed he would roar. I could have layed down my own rocks, but I didn't want anything coming in to take residual damage. Poor thinking on my end altogether. I only have two SR weak pokemon on this team and aside from Ninetales, nothing else would have cared about being roared in. I should have used Stealth rock. On the bright side, Hippo is trapped. And as it has shown itself to be physically bulky so far if anything, a double STAB boosted fire blast should finish him off. Why double STAB, you say? I'm carrying a fire jewel, that's why. Why a fire jewel? So that I can smack t-tar in the face with an HP Fighting should he try to revenge me. Yeah, I've since learned the error of my ways. I stopped using the fire jewel a few battles later.

Start of turn 14

Hippo is dead and the weather will soon be in my favor once more. But a huge threat to my entire team has just shown up. I don't want to leave shandy in as fire blast won't do much to this thing's base 105 special defense, even when unboosted. Urga can dance on anything I do and then wipe out shandera, even if I fire blast. So I'll switch donphan in on the butterfly dance since I'm sure my opponent thinks I'll switch.

Ugh...it's no wonder why Donphan is on absolutely none of my newer sun teams now. His track record of doing almost nothing effective aside from laying down rocks and spinning has not been changed. And when he could have done something important, he fails me. Ah well, this kind of thing happens to everyone. Now I'm in a horrible position, so I'll have to play around with switches, Urga's life orb, and the sandstorm in order to wait this bio hazard out.

Screw it. This match has been lost. Might as well boost Urga's fire attacks while I'm at it. Although thinking about it now, switching in Tales was still pretty foolish. Tales should have been switched in once everything else on my team was dead save venusaur was dead. Doing calcs now, I realize that had I not switched ninetales in, the sand and the life orb would have saved me an extra pokemon.

Foolishness indeed. Well, my leaf guard meganium is my status blocker, dual screener, and phaser all at once. However, none of this matters as meganium will now be reduced to nothing more than fodder.

The horror is over at last. And now it's one against three. However, my heart is once again filled with hope. This Venusaur is a legend. In the RAIN, it once combatted a stall team and won me the match. Simply to stop it from sweeping, the likes of Politoed and Hippo end up sacrificing themselves to him simply to slow his malice. The sun is up. With just one growth, maybe I can win this!

And in comes roobushin, who tanks the HP Fire for Erufuun like the boss he is, cinder blocks in hand. Huh...why am I running EQ again? Shandera in DW and Heatran? Most heatrans are airplanes now and shandera isn't a huge problem for this team overall. Let's leave the mixed sets to Victreebel and exeguttor from now on...

Complaining aside, my opponent is using a Guts roobushin. He won't mach punch me since I'm still somewhat healthy and I resist mach punch. This is my last hurrah anyway. Why not go all out. All he has left if this, a crippled erufuun, and the Doryuzuu he's kept so well concealed. Maybe he isn't even using Doryuzuu? In any case venusaur, it's time we danced. Let's end this battle in a manly shower of petals.

And the battle was lost.

Props:
-Shandera for killing off Hippo, allowing me to bring the weather back with ease.
-Venusaur for still being awesome.
-Urgamoth for proving that Stealth rock is indeed the best move in the game and teaching me a lesson by sweeping 2/3rd of my team
-My opponent for concealing Doryuzuu well and winning with him anyway despite sand being long gone.
-Erufuun in general

Slops:
-Me, for being a relatively lousy sport and not thinking I could win mid match
-Donphan for not doing a dang thing the whole battle.
-Meganium for being sacrificed by my errors.

MVP:

I've since learned from battles like these not to quit midway. I've also learned a bit more about team synergy and all that jazz. Hopefully in the future, I can deliver a better warstory with less mistakes. Preferably one that doesn't take 85 turns where Parasect dominates half the match and trick room...

Literally :D'd when I saw your team.

Well, on the plus side: loved the presentation and you had a pretty good commentary (liked the nondescript little messages about each poke's status too). Also surprised to see you lose, as most warstories are a win, so props for that. And ofc major props for the Sun warstory :P (I feel your pain in being locked into Petal Dance VS a steel...)

Things to be improved: a few misplays, most notably with Ninetales at the start and middle (as in my experience leaving her in too long results in bad things), as well as the little hax, in your favour or not. The battle wasn't that dramatic imo though admittedly I am used to playing with something similar to your team, though I appreciate that it was some time ago and your desire to post. The final sweep and SE missing were exceptions, however. Finally, the sets seem a little unrefined but again the long-time-agoness I assume is why.

Overall though I did enjoy the warstory and look forward to more from you, especially with your writing style and easy on the eyes formatting. And kudos for the first Sun warstory (as far as I know).

If you hadn't sent in ninetails, Urgamoth would have died one turn earlier thanks to sandstorm. Also, I doubt Roobushin would have 1hko'd and being locked in petal dance vs something you need hp fire for (like dory) is gg.

The sets are indeed unrefined. Since this battle, I've ditched petal dance (it's like inviting nattorei to come in and ruin everything) and mixed venusaur altogether. I just run special venusaur with a set you yourself suggested in another topic. Sludge Bomb, Growth, Giga Drain, and HP fire. Sludge bomb does indeed help vs. dragons. The ninetales, shandera and goruggo have changed as well among other things. Fire jewel shandera..not sure what I was thinking. @_@

I wasn't worried about roopushin OHKO'ing me. I was worried about life orb and one attack putting me into range where even mach punch putting me into KO range. Switching in Ninetales was my worst play of the battle though, I'll admit.

Haha yeah, that Venusaur set <3. Incidentally i think I'm now using the Power Swap Tales you suggested (I think) to great effect. But yeah, I used to run the exact same Venusaur you are in this battle, and being locked in is such a huge pain.

In any case I hope you don't think my criticism of sets takes away from the battle, a lot of warstories posted now have been from old teams and have got a lot of support.

Why run petal dance over power whip? This match shows the reliability is worth it despite the power drop. It beats out giga drain too.

Power Whip and Chlorophyll are illegal.

Entertaining, even with that damn SE miss and a few misplays. The format was great as well, although your opps team should be in front as well, right? Since you can see it.

8/10

My god! It is so nice to come to read a warstory and be surprised by one in which you take place ^^

This was my first team in PO.

The most interesting thing is that this Ulgamoth, who had the opportunity to sweep in this match is one of the two members that have been taken out of my team. And the reason is exactly the whole point of this match: its 4x weakness to rocks along with the fact that in this so fast and straight-forwarded metagame is almost impossible to have time to lay down YOUR rocks and spin away the opponent's.

One sad thing: this Eruufun is my personal creation and have granted me 104 ragequits so far, but in this match it hadn't had the time to shine(annoy)

As for the warstory posted, I'd give a 8/10 and point out that percentages really make a difference. For example, in this match it is vital for the reader to follow Ulgamoth's defeat to Sand+Life Orb.

Thanks for well-played battle.

Edit: Wasn't Ulgamoth the MVP? I mean..He did do a good sweep, didn't he? =x

No. Since this was in PO, he couldn't see my team previosly.
