Good evening Big City! Live with Big City News 1, this is your host, UncleSam.

Fittingly for the Big City, Big Happenings are afoot! Firstly, we are receiving reports that a renowned Cartel Boss has recently infiltrated our fine city, and the local Police Commissioner had this to say on the matter: “We are aware of the threat of a new drug lord in our town, but if he and his Goons think they can simply run over the residents of The Big City, they’ve got another thing coming. We will band together to defeat the threat of The Cartel once and for all.”

What insightful comments from our local Police Commissioner! We have received additional information that The Cartel’s deployment was a bit haphazard, and that they may still be organizing things on their end. Early reports indicate that there is a central group of lieutenants assisting the Cartel Boss, but that the rest of their foot soldiers are scattered Goons. So look to your left, and look to your right - statistically, one of your neighbors is a Goon.

But wait, that’s not all!

A panic has swept the Big City recently, as more and more reports of a vicious serial killer known only as The Psychopath have emerged. As the fear and paranoia surrounding these brutal murders permeate every facet of society, please remember to lock your doors, keep a watchful eye, and as always, remain vigilant! We have details on his two most recent victims, may they rest in peace:

Dear <Smogon User>, you are The Goon.

Alias: <Sample Alias 1>.

Well, more like ‘a’ Goon. You were dispatched by the Cartel Boss to infiltrate the Big City and bring it to heel. While you are isolated from your fellows for now, you know that you will prove useful in the end.

While you are alive, you help contribute to the Cartel’s power to the tune of 1 Strength. You know that the Cartel Boss has a way to use this, but aren’t sure what it is. Perhaps if you get promoted into their inner circle, you will learn more and grow in strength. You do know that prior to a promotion you may still be empowered to perform individual actions on the Cartel’s behalf, and if so then you will learn what you were asked to do, who you were asked to target, and the results of that action. It will be up to you to report back to the Cartel any results, however.

Additionally, at any time you may submit “NX - Goon Squad <Alias>”. If more than half of all living goons submit the same target for this ability AND the Cartel Boss approves the hit, you will all kill <Alias> that night. Note that even if promoted, you will remain a Goon for the purposes of Goon Squad. Goon Squad cannot succeed more than once every two nights, starting on Night 1.

You are allied with the Cartel. You win if the Cartel eliminates all threats.

With the death of half of the starting goons, you and your remaining companions have entered a state of frenzy. Unpromoted goons now count for 2 strength, and Goon Squad is now usable two out of every three nights moving forward.

Well, someone had to be made an example of. Unfortunately, it was you. All Big City residents have a unique role name and ability, and there is no Big City factional ability.

You have no standard night action. For an example of how to format a standard night action, see the Goon example PM. Not all Big City residents have a standard night action, but most do. Those who do not may have a variety of other passive abilities or special knowledge that may help the Big City root out threats to its existence.

You are allied with the Big City. You win if the Big City eliminates all threats.

Finally, there are reports of several additional new occupants in town, whose goals and capabilities remain unknown. We will refer to these persons as ‘Neutrals’ henceforth.

Tl;dr to the above:

• The Big City is the Village faction. This is an uninformed majority that will operate similarly to other OC Smogon villages.
• The Cartel is the Mafia faction. They will operate slightly differently from a standard OC mafia faction, because many of their members are scattered, isolated Goons. There is a core group of Cartel members, however.
• The Psychopath is a Lone Wolf, meaning this player requires all others to be dead in order to win. Their range of abilities are as-of-yet unknown.
• There are assorted other Neutral parties that have goals of their own. Some may be more harmful to The Big City than others, but all require certain roles or factions to die before they can win. None can be considered ‘harmless’.

Game-specific information:

• This game will function largely as a standard 1v1, with a day cycle consisting of a majority vote to eliminate one player followed by a night cycle with role-specific or faction-specific actions occurring. The game will start with a deathless night.
• All standard rules apply - no screenshotting, deadtalking, etc. etc. If you need a refresher on the rules please go see any other game on this forum.
• This is a bastard game, straight up. Do not trust night results, including inspections. Not even death results are infallible. Individual alliances may change mid-game, though the factional win conditions will not. Be careful who you trust and think for yourself. You have been warned.
• This game will be played with aliases on the Smogon forums. This means that, in each role PM, you will be given an alias corresponding to one of the 52 possible aliases in the playerlist. All actions target aliases, including the daily vote. At the conclusion of the daily vote, it will be revealed which aliases voted for the ‘winning’ alias (i.e. the alias that was removed from the game). The Smogon Username of that alias will also be revealed.
• It is highly, HIGHLY recommended that you use Discord while playing this game. While you may be able to participate and have fun solely through PM, it is likely that doing so will severely restrict your ability to communicate with others, and may hamper your team’s winning chances.
• For Night 0 only, I am going to ban copy / pasting of role PMs. You may describe your role if you wish in your own words, you may share alias, etc. - but you must wait until Day 1 has started to copy / paste the full text of your role PM to anyone. This restriction is lifted for those whose alias you have explicitly mentioned in your role PM (i.e. twins could share their full role PMs with one another).

Mechanical Details:

• Smogon usernames will be blanked out in inspection results, unless otherwise noted. Any aliases specified in a role PM will also be blanked out (for example, if there were two twins who were given each others’ alias).
• If a non-killing action fails, I will not reveal why but will simply say that it failed. If a killing action fails, I will reveal the role reason but no flavor (i.e. I would say Roleblocked, Bodyguarded, passive protection, limited-use protection, etc.).
• If an alias is revealed in your Role PM, I will also reveal the Smogon username of that alias to you via Discord IM if you message me.
• I randomized all aliases. While I accepted private role requests, roles were >95% randomized. That is all that I will say about that.
