Welcome to Monotype Past Generation Mega Thread, this thread is where discussion of past Monotype metagames can occur, while also trying to make accurate resources that reflect the current state of these past metagames.
Supported metagames
ORAS Monotype (Gen 6)
BW Monotype (Gen 5)
DPP Monotype (Gen 4)
Guidelines to follow before posting
  • Specify metagame that you are talking about in your post so that other people do not get confused
  • Know the mechanics for specific metagame because certain Pokemon aren't viable because they don't have certain moves, abilities, stats, or typing
  • Do not post pointless one liners EX: Why Clefable S Rank in ORAS and C Rank in BW if you have questions feel free to VM or PM me with those types of questions
  • Do not post if you do not have an experience with metagame (No theorymoning)
  • Bans or unbans will most likely not occur for many any of these past metagames so do not ask for them
  • Please don't flame other users they may not know the specific metagame as well you do
  • If providing sample teams please make sure the team is viable and is a clear representation of the metagame
  • No Joke or God nominations in Viability Rankings just don't

What is ORAS Monotype?
ORAS Monotype is (Gen6) Monotype and is a past Monotype metagame
Banlist?
Monotype specific Banlist can be found here
Couple things to keep in mind
  • Thunder Wave makes target 1/4 as fast instead of 1/2 as fast
  • Mega Evolutions are based of their regular form not their Mega Form and base form so for example Mega Gyarados is usable on Flying teams because regular Gyarados is a Flying type
  • Gen 7 Pokemon and moves are not allowed Ex: Tapu Koko and Psychic Fangs
  • Every Mega Evolution is available and usable as long as it isn't banned
  • Z moves do not exist
  • Pokemon cannot learn moves form their Gen7 level up / egg moves use Gen6 teambuilder to ensure that one isn't using incorrect moves EX: Roost Mantine

BW stands for Black and White also known as Generation 5. Monotype is when all six of your Pokemon share the exact same type. EX: Politoed, Vaporeon, Cloyster, Keldeo, Swampert, Lanturn this would be acceptable for a Water Monotype. Dual typing are allowed for example Garchomp can be used on both Dragon and Ground teams. This metagame had its own ladder and is the original Monotype metagame.
FAQ
Q: Can I use Mega Evolutions?
A: No you can't use Mega Evolutions they are not available in BW.

Q: Does the Fairy type exist in BW?
A: No the fairy type does not exist in BW therefore there are only 17 types to choose from

Q: Is Drizzle banned?
A: No Drizzle is not banned, but Drizzle plus Swift Swim is banned as well as Sand Stream+Sand Rush and Drought plus Chlorophyll (impossible combination).

Q: What format can I play BW Monotype in?
A: You can play BW Monotype in Gen 5 OU

Q: Will Ubers be unbanned in BW Monotype?

DPP (Gen 4) Monotype was in discussion multiple times among veteran Monotype players. Credit goes to Chras for pushing the metagame.
The metagame is meant to give players a taste of a metagame that never had a ladder and wasn't explored when it was the current metagame.
Major Differences
  • Rotom is Ghost Electric type regardless of form Ex: Rotom-wash is a Ghost Electric Type not an Electric Water type
  • Gen 5 and Gen 6 Pokemon are banned
  • Mega Evolutions are banned
  • Gen 5 and Gen 6 items are banned EX: Assault Vest
  • Gen 5 and Gen 6 tutor moves are banned
  • Explosion halves the target's defense (250*2=500 bp)
  • The Pokemon that is put in first in teambuilder is your lead automatically
  • No Team Preview
  • Please use the Gen4 OU teambuilder to validate the team to fix any other minor issue not listed above

Standard Offensive Bug team:
Galvantula: It is the sticky web user of the team providing sticky web support. Focus sash is used to ensure that galvantula can get sticky web up in most cases. Thunder is the stab move on the set that has accuracy increase thanks to its ability compound eyes. Thunder is used to hit water and flying type that are weak to it. Energy ball is used here for bulky ground types such as swampert, gastrodon, hippowdon etc while Hp ice is used to hit targets such as garchomp, landorus and dragonite.
Armaldo: Armaldo provides utility support to the team in the form of stealth rock, rapid spin and knock off utility. Stealth rock is well appreciated by offensive teammates such as choice banded scizor and mega pinsir as it turns many 2hko into a ohko. knock off is a good utility move helping remove item of item reliant pokemon such as porygon2 and chansey. Stone edge is used for fire and flying types such as Mega charizard and zapdos.
Pinsir-Mega: Threatening set up sweeper, it appreciates sticky web support as then it can outspeed pokemon such as choice scarf victini. Swords dance turns Pinsir-Mega into a very threatening wall breaker that is also capable of sweeping teams with priority quick attack. Close combat is used for steel types that resist its flying STAB moves such as heatran and skarmory.
Volcarona: The special set up sweeper of the team. Quiver dance boosts volcarona stats which makes it threatening sweeper, fiery dance is the STAB move that has a chance to increase its special attack by 1 stage. Bug buzz is the other STAB move on the set, helping a lot in psychic match up while hidden power ground is used to take out heatran so that volcarona can sweep steel teams. Lum berry is used as an item to protect it from status moves for a turn.
Heracross: The speed control of the team sporting a choice scarf. Heracross can be difficult to stop late game as it gets increasing attack boost with each kill it scores thanks to moxie. With sticky web support it can outspeed pokemon such as scarf victini which is problematic for bug teams, Close combat and Mega horn are its two STAB moves. Earthquake and stone edge is used to hit fire and flying types better. It also has amazing coverage together.
Scizor:With a choice band scizor can threatens team without any need to set up and can dish out some serious damage thanks to choice band boost, Bullet punch allows it to take out fairy types such as Mega diancie and Mega gardevoir while U-turn is used to gain momentum on a predicted switch in. Superpower is used for steel types mainly such as heatran and Ferrothorn while Knock off is used for utility purpose.

This is an offensive fighting team that is fairly standard:
Cobalion: This is your lead pokemon to set stealth rocks and taunt opposing leads from setting up hazards. Thunder wave helps to spread paralysis while also slowing down faster threats which makes it easier for teammates to take out. Iron head is used for fairy types and it can OHKO mega gardevoir after stealth rock damage with the given ev spread.
Mega Medicahm: Mega medicham is the wall breaker of the team. Double priority moves in fake out and bullet punch helps to revenge kill or clean faster pokemon. Bullet punch OHKOs mega diancie which is a threat to this team. High jump kick is used to take shred cores apart as it severely dents anything it hits. Zen headbutt is used for poison types such as Mega venusaur.
Keldeo:Keldeo is the special wall breaker of the team, with a choice specs it hits insanely hard able to 2hko most walls with either hydro pump or secret sword. Icy wind is used for dragon types such as garchomp, dragonite etc. Hydro pump is mainly used as a nuke to wall break while scald should be used to fish for burns or to clean.
Terrakion: Terrakion is the speed control of the team as it has a very good base speed at 108. Its rock coverage helps in flying match up where it can clean the team once its check and counters have been weakened. Stone edge is used for flying types such as Zapdos and Mega charizard Y. Close combat is the go-to stab move since it has perfect accuracy and so can be relied on. Earthquake is used for poison and electric types such as Nidoking and Mega Manectric respectively. Iron head is used for fairy types such as clefable,Mega Gardevoir and Mega Diancie.
Breloom: Breloom provides the team with additional priority move in mach punch and its ability to take out bulky water types such as swampert, slowbro with relative ease. Spore allows it to cripple opposing pokemon for few turns rendering them useless. Rock tomb is used for pokemon such as Zapdos, dragonite etc as it resists other moves on the set. Bullet seed thanks to technician boost hits hard and is the move of choice vs water and ground types.
Hawlucha: Hawlucha is the set up sweeper of the team and thanks to its ability unburden allows it to outspeed the whole metagame once unburden gets activated. Swords dance is used to make hawlucha a threatening attacker as otherwise it has a sub par attack stat. Substitute is used to protect it from status moves such as thunder wave,will-o-wisp,toxic while also granting more opportunities to set up swords dance. Acrobatics and High jump kick being its stab moves has good coverage.

I updated the sample teams some that were clear representations are the metagame they're in. If your samples are not on here and you want to know why please PM or VM me because I'm going to do QC like the SM sample teams thread since I do not have time to do that
A reminder it is clear some people who have posted teams do not know mechanics / common threats about the respective metagame. If you're unsure about the sample team feel free to PM me before posting it. Remember quality>quantity
Thank you to everyone that submitted sample teams!

Hoopa-U is now banned from ORAS Monotype: http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/hoopa-u-in-oras-monotype.3625914/#post-7670180

This should be a pretty interesting shake up. I'm personally going to keep my eye on Shadow Tag now that Hoopa-U's out, which was one of the Pokemon that really terrorized Shadow Tag users (finally don't need to use Colbur Berry Signal Beam Gothitelle in like half my Psychic teams). Any of you have any cool ideas for what changes you're looking forward to?

Really a very minute question, but because Latias has been unbanned from DPP, does that make Latias usable in DPP Monotype?

For DPP we're planning on having a round robin tour every Saturday for metagame development and we had our first one today and it was interesting to say the least.

Steel and Psychic were by far the most common types since they are by far the easiest to use. Flying was also used a decent amount most likely due to fact that lead Aerodactyl outspeeds most common leads most notably Azelf. It should also be noted samples were very common since many people did not want to build or experiment besides Starblim and I since it was first tour this was to be expected.

No team preview made it so samples were a lot easier to use since it is difficult to determine if a sample is being used since most DPP Monotype teams have few notable differences. On top of this many did not utilize the Explosion mechanics on special attackers such as Magnezone and Gengar this is can be attributed to the fact most Monotype players started playing in ORAS and Explosion mechanics changed in BW which is earliest generation that is relevant in tours. I believe this will change once people get used to the mechanics but it was interesting to say the least and speaks volumes to how there was never a Monotype community in Gen 4 (DPP) on Smogon.

In most of the games a common trend I noticed was Offensive SD Scizor being able to sweep half the metagame with just a single Swords Dance has potential to any type especially with the relevance on Spikes support from Forretress or Skarmory being ridiculously easy to get up and maintain due to lack of viable Rapid Spin users outside of Starmie (Water and Psychic), Cloyster (Ice), Forretress* (not always used on Steel), Tentacruel (Water and Poison), Torkoal (Fire), and Armaldo (Bug). This in turn makes Spike staking an extremely prominent strategy in the metagame on every type (not just Ghost and Steel in BW). The overall offensive nature of the metagame just gives SD Scizor many opportunities to set up a Swords Dance and sweep Mid- to Late-game in virtually every matchup.

Latias gives Dragon new life but overall Dragon is still mediocre in DPP Monotype since it still needs a NFE Pokemon to fill out the team most likely Gabite to set up Rocks. Latias makes Dragon somewhat threatening but Dragon still lacks offensive fire power to compete with types like Psychic, Steel, and Fighting.

Latias on Psychic has immense potential that was not fully utilized due to fact most people used sample teams. Substitute + CM Latias is something most types cannot switch due to absence of Fairy types. Other sets such as Choice Specs, Choice Scarf, and Calm Mind + 3 Attacks, Calm Mind Roost + 2 Attacks all are usable on Psychic unlike on Dragon where Choice Specs would be preferred due to lack of immediate breaking power on Dragon. Latias gives Psychic another fast special attacker that outspeeds a majority of the metagame and adds another level of unpredictability when facing a Psychic team questions such as is it Choice Scarf, Choice Specs, Calm Mind are always prevalent when playing against a Latias Psychic team.

I'm looking forward to seeing more DPP matches next week since with the metagame is really fast paced, fun, and has immense potential as a competitive format.

Overall, I found DPP Monotype to be very top heavy and unbalanced in some aspects not too much unlike BW Monotype. However, unlike BW Monotype I think there is more of a clear solution to "fix" the metagame since it is clear what aspects of the metagame are unhealthy and it would be easy to eliminate said aspects.

I would like to encourage discussion in this thread to help identify what exactly in unhealthy and what exactly is just really good in order to make a balanced and fun metagame.

We had 2 round robin tours earlier and we have some interesting replays
Replay 1
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen4ou-877211481
Replay 1 showcases Scizor just being able to sweep a Ground team with relative ease. This can mainly be attributed to lack of Scald as a tool to neuter Scizor despite having Quagsire. This is mainly because entry hazards are extremely to easy to set up and maintain in the metagame.
Replay 2
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen4ou-877201889
The second replays shows two off-meta types that are held back by Scizor specifically Rock. Scizor discourages the use of Rock and Dark two types that would have some sort of presence because Dark does well against Psychic, a top-tier type. However, it is too risky to use these types seriously with Scizor Steel having a positive matchup against 90% of the metagame.

I would like to encourage everyone to link their replays and talk about their builds and what bans could be done to make a healthy metagame.

Other trends I've noticed is Water was used a bit more in this tour compared to last week. Water is the second most diverse type behind Psychic, so we saw many different approaches to building a Water team. Leads vary like Psychic from Swampert, Cloyster, and Suicune are not dedicated leads outside of Cloyster. This in turn puts Water at a disadvantage when compared to Fighting, Psychic, and Steel since they all have multiple metagame defining leads in Infernape, Machamp, Azelf, Metagross, Bronzong, Heatran, etc. Although I feel Offensive Calm Mind Suicune is one of the best late game cleaners especially when it's paired with entry hazard support in lead Cloyster and Swampert. Defensive Suicune has also seen some success, but with absence of Scald offensive seems to be the route to go, since defensive Pokemon cannot wall many Pokemon in the metagame due to prevalence of Spikes and Stealth Rock.

Other trends I saw was Flying wasn't used that much which is unusual since it can reliably check Scizor by phazing it with Skarmory or with Intimidate Gyarados. Along with this the high Steel usage and low Fighting usage could be attributed to the dominance of Latias in the metagame. Steel is one of the few types that can reliable beats Latias with Scizor or Metagross being able the best checks to it. Latias Psychic teams haven't been present as much as I'd think they'd be, this is probably because the current Psychic sample team does not have Latias and the player's wanting to develop and innovate in the metagame instead of using the best builds to dominate.

Next week we will be hosting a DPP tour where Scizor is banned and one where Scizor isn't on Saturday March 23rd at 2 pm EST in the Monotype Events room. We will also host another similar tour on March 23rd at 8 pm est to accommodate for American timezones in Monotype Events room.

Feel free to discuss any possible changes a Scizorless DPP Monotype tour can provide.

Personally I think Latias will become an even more overwhelming force in the metagame with Scizor gone making Sub + CM sets even more viable. On top of that it'll let Steel use other options viable such as SD Lucario and Magnezone that should give multiple "standard" builds. I would like to think that Dark and Ghost would be used to counter the surge in Psychic usage. One possible negative impact of the ban would be the absence from Bug in the metagame, since Scizor is main reason why Bug was even considered because of its sweeping and wallbreaking potential. I would love to hear other people's thoughts on the subject of a Scizorless metagame.

We had a Scizorless tour and the results were very interesting to say the least.

The biggest thing that stuck out to me was increased usage of Fighting and Psychic. The increased usage of Fighting makes sense because Scizor is one of few mons in the metagame that is limiting its potential and somewhat keeping it in check. Other things of note was steel usage plummeted which was to be expected because many people did not want to use Steel since fighting was running rampant despite Choice Scarf Jirachi and Metagross being viable offensive answers to fighting teams and Skarmory being a viable defensive answer.

Since Scizor is still a prevalent mon in the metagame I've thought of and seen many ways to take advantage of it. One set I was thinking of was Defensive Infernape with Wil-O-Wisp Slack Off Stealth Rock and a filler move to always wall cripple Scizor. However, this would only be useful on Fighting teams just for Scizor making it seem a bit niche especially in an offensive metagame. This build would allow Blaziken to be used effectively, but I do not see it being that useful outside of matchups with Scizor so it will most likely not utilized by the community as a whole. I will be trying it in next week's tours to see if it actually is a viable strategy and I'll post my thoughts on it later.

Couple major surprises from the tour were Bug was still getting usage despite Scizor not being allowed. This could be linked to Psychic being a bit better without Scizor, and Bug can take on both Psychic and Fighting even without Scizor with Heracross and Yanmega. Another thing to note is Dragon with Latias is no longer the worst type in the metagame because of changes to evasion clause allowing Gabite to used as Stealth Rocker and Latias being such a powerful force. However, Dragon is still very limited in terms of viable mons, it now just has 5 viable mons and a solid nfe lead now making it .

Electric was also seen a bit, but it still is very underwhelming due to lack of hazards and hazard removal hold it back from being a powerful force in current metagame despite having plenty of good mons in Zapdos, Raikou, and Rotom-W. This just seemed like a couple people just wanted to try Electric because they liked the mons on that type, but it seemed interesting never less.

Ice without Scizor still seems great, but it is held back by the high usage of Fighting without Scizor and Steel with Scizor. It does well in most other matchups because weather outside of Hail and Sand are not that common. The presence of Hail and absence of Sun and Rain makes Stalrein an even bigger threat than it was in BW being one of consistent walls in the DPP metagame. Ice also has access to Toxic Spikes, Stealth Rock, and Spikes enhancing Stalrien's ability to wear down threats with Poison and hail. I find Ice to be one of more underrated types in the metagame and would recommend everyone tries to use at some point since it is so enjoyable to use.

Overall, the Scizorless tour was a success and we gathered some data on what a Scizorless metagame would look like, but we need to countine analyzing the differences between a metagame with Scizor and one without Scizot to see what is best for the metagame.

As usual I encourage anyone to post replays sets or opinions on the metagame in general in the thread so that we can have a long healthy discussion about the metagame.

Next week will be hosting two normal DPP round robin tours at on Saturday March 30th 2pm and 8pm EST to further metagame development.

I recently decided to look over Fire as a typing since I thought the types natural resistance to Scizor's Bullet Punch and advantage over Steel could be nice as an anti meta pick. However the type was very weak to Stealth Rock, due to the fact that it neutered most of its offensive Pokemon such as Entei and Charizard from switching in effectively and was overall a huge roadblock in the way of Fire's success, much like later generations. Being completely reliant on Torkoal for removal also didn't help much with the issue. Another thing with Fire was I feel like no auto sun kinda sucked for it in terms of helping its offensive Pokemon pick apart the opposing team and weakened water moves are always good with a type with kinda shaky defensive utility in comparison to later generations, where Fire had access to auto sun in Ninetales, Mega Charizard Y, and Torkoal in their respective metagames (Ninetales in BW, Charizard Y in ORAS, Torkoal and Charizard Y in SM).

Heatran @ Focus Sash
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Fire Blast
- Taunt
- Explosion
- Stealth Rock

I was trying out this lead Heatran StarBlim recommended me after Torkoal's unreliability and tendency to faint early game caused the entire Fire team to come slowly come down to switching in and out of Stealth Rock. Basically faster Taunt can be nice for denying hazards up early game against most slower hazard setters that are faster than Torkoal in order to prevent Stealth Rock from getting up and chipping your team. Explosion was ridiculous in DPP with base 500 BP so you can do massive damage to pretty much anything that doesn't resist it and throw in one of your offensive Pokemon to start doing damage after. Sash + Taunt Infernape could have been cool, but on the team I used I thought Choice Scarf Infernape could be pretty nice since its Speed tier lets it outspeed stuff like Choice Scarf Jirachi, Staraptor, Heracross and Aerodactyl, and didn't feel like giving that up.

Houndoom @ Black Glasses
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Fire Blast
- Dark Pulse
- Sucker Punch / Hidden Power [Grass]
- Nasty Plot

Just like in later generations, Psychic proved to be a great type in DPP with its wide variety of good Pokemon. Since DPP didn't have tools such as Volcarona and Blacephalon in later generations to help vs Psychic teams, Houndoom was something I came up with to try to have something for the type running rampant in the metagame. The set was originally Nasty Plot + 3 attacks but then many Psychic teams carrying Rapid Spin Starmie as a form of hazard removal and a nice offensive option came into play and was naturally a huge threat for Fire teams to deal with because of its Water STAB moves and Fire's lack of sun making the problem more prominent. Nasty Plot + 3 attacks became a bit unreliable at consistently dealing with the type, so I decided to put Sucker Punch on the set to try to catch Starmie off guard, but this forces Houndoom to give up a coverage move, in this case Hidden Power Grass for Swampert on Water teams. Sucker Punch also helps with picking off faster Psychic-type Pokemon such as Alakazam and Latias since Houndoom's speed isn't the best. Outside of the Psychic and possibly Ghost matchups, Houndoom can be kinda underwhelming because of its low bulk and lackluster speed but I think its a good option to cteam Psychic.

- Shadow Ball

I came up with this Spiritomb set in order to attempt to fix the problem of Dark's natural lack of Fighting answers in DPP since Sableye was shaky due to lack of Prankster and Mandibuzz was unreleased. Rest is Spiritomb's only form of good recovery, as Pain Split was sorta unreliable if Spiritomb's constantly switching into attacks for the rest of the team. Will-O-Wisp lets Spiritomb cripple Pokemon and slowly wear them down, and Shadow Ball seemed promising as a form of reliable damage. A defensive spread helps it take on physical Fighting-type Pokemon more reliably. For now, Spiritomb will have to do as Dark's main Fighting answer so I could definitely see it becoming a staple on the type in the near future. Dark in general is very weak to hazard stacking teams with Pokemon such as Skarmory that could threaten to lay down layers of Spikes and use Whirlwind to slowly wear the team down because the type is completely unable to remove hazards.

this is basically what I've tried out so far and would like to see this metagame develop in the near future
