ORAS Monotype Role Compendium

The idea of this thread is to provide a visual list of what Pokémon does what for each type in the ORAS Monotype metagame. This will help new and experienced players alike in finding Pokémon that fit their teams when looking for specific roles, as well as help players build more diverse teams by not always using the same Pokémon to fill the same role. Each Pokemon that are on here are on here based on their viability in the Monotype and their performance of generic or specific (niche, if you will) roles that benefit your team. If you feel there is a Pokemon viable for the roles mentioned below and it hasn't been added to the group, recommend it in your post. (Note: work in progress)

Banned deucer.
Staraptor is not a stall breaker because it cannot break skarmory/Hippodown/avalugg er\tc as it dies to recoil so please remove it from there. Also Choice scarf heliosk is a very potent win con for normal as its high powered stab combo can allow it to clean water/fighting teams as well as just act as a good check to mons like Mega Gdos

Include Volcanion as a Rock/Ground check. For Infernape, LO is also considered to be a wallbreaker, I wouldn't leave it as just banded. Also have Heatran and Torkoal as defensive Pivots, they're walls you'll tend to switch in (even though the type itself is highly offensive, nonetheless still should be included). Great job otherwise!

I think it would be nice to have a ''Poison Checks'' category in Grass, and include Celebi once it is done. There are categories for all its weakness except for Poison, which's why I find it reasonable to include it.

By the way, i wouldn't really say that Tangrowth is an offensive pivot, really. It does its job as a defensive pivot thanks to its large bulk and regenerator, and it often runs defensive spreads to increase its longevity and sponge hits better, but it can't work offensively in the same way as Celebi, Whimsicott and Rotom. (Besides, Tangrowth doesn't even learn u-turn/volt switch or any other momentum-based moves that offensive pokemons carry).

1. why quote me? i'm not including why something uses a choice item, that's zyo's thing
2. it's a terrible set it's still slow and really weak
edit: to elaborate, there are better scarfers on fire and you're better off with a specs wallbreaker, if you even want that because zard is a thing. i guess it checks diancie w/ scarf but like scp said, revenge killer =/= check. there are also better options for diancie checks like heatran

On Water, I wouldn't include Rotom-W as an Electric check. It's neutral to the type, and otherwise, can't really do much else to it (Lanturn/Swampert are much better since they're immune/have ways of beating Electric Teams via Ground STAB/Toxic/Burn Stall). I also wouldn't include Empoleon as a Grass check for the same reason.

On Psychic, include Hoopa-U as a Choice Band user.

On Fighting, under Fairy checks, include Toxicroak.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've been on vacation so I just saw this. I'd like to address some of them however. Rotom-W can not be 2hkoed by most electric types/attacks (Depending what spread obviously) and with Pain Split + Will-o, it can force switches. With that in mind, I think it can work well as a soft check and can be useful.

With regards to Empoleon, I would say it can check some grass types, but overall I suppose it wouldn't be a blanket check. I'll remove it when I get back.

Hoopa-U I'll add. Thanks for noticing I didn't have it there.

Now with Toxicroak, I was thinking it's a Fairy check, but I'm not sure what tier of Viablity that we can post for suggestions (Toxicroak is D on Fighting). I'll tag Zyo so he can clarify.

Why would tenta and empoleon not be defensive pivots? Also, there is a suicide lead Keldeo set I remember Neski running that featured endevour, keep that.

I wouldn't classify the Endeavor Keldeo set as a suicide lead. A Suicide lead typically would be setting something up and fainting asap to let teammates take advantage of it, like Tailwind or some entry hazard. Keldeo doesn't set up anything for its teammates, and, iirc, it doesn't have room for Taunt on the Endeavor set, (Scald, Secret Sword, Endeavor, Aqua Jet / Substitute?) so it doesn't have that great of a matchup against other leads.

Also, add Manaphy to Calm Mind and Weather Abusers, and maybe add Empoleon to the Agility setup section.

Now, to be fair, I just got into monotype, so I could be missing something obvious here. But isn't drapion is a decent scarfer on poison teams? Speaking of poison type scarfers, what's toxicroak doing in that category?

This might be just me thinking this, but not only have I never seen scarf Drapion on Poison, it's outclassed by scarf Nidoking and Gengar and is impractical as it goes against it's general role on Poison as a Psychic check and setter/trapper. Also, because of its awkward speed tier, it doesn't really cover for/hit hard enough anything that could be a real threat for Poison.

As for Toxicroak I'm not so sure, tagging Zyo to explain that.

Both of them when scarfed have the ability to check garchomp, lando, zard y, and volc. All 4 of them are huge threats to poison teams

Zardy and volc(assuming volcarona) both get ohkodwith rock slide.

Considering that ice fang ohkos neither of them on any set (lando/chomp), both types have switchins to ice attack (gastrodon, seismitoad, skarmory) and it gets kod in return by ground stab, i dont really think it checks them. It hardly even forces out defensive sets. I agree with what llama says about drapion lacking power (base 90 attack u_u) and being unable to fulfill its role as a psychic check.

As for toxicroak, that sounds absolutely terrible. However, I have no experience with this set myself so i really don't know if it's as bad as it sounds.

I've personally never liked scarf Drapion, Scarf Toxicroak however Twix introduced me to a while back. It is actually a handy set to have.

The Hub is now updated! thanks to everyone who contributed.

btw, Some things that are not already in the OP are already implemented in the Hub so before making suggestions try to look at the Hub first as its the main source for compendiums. (ill try to update the OP according to the Hub on a day im not busy)

(I'm not sure if Spikes is listed in any typing, or if there is a point in suggesting it)

I'm on mobile so I'm not making it all fancy like everyone else does with their posts. I'll edit it later.
