Type Cores are cores that originate from 3 types that work well together. They can be great offensively, or have really good defensive synergy. Some examples of popular type cores are the FWG (Fire, Water, Grass) and PDF (Psychic, Dark, Fighting). The goal of this project will be to have the community come up with cores using the types assigned that week, and hopefully discover new combinations in the process. It'll be more focused on type affiliations and type synergy, and not so much on partners and threats.

Please don't just copy cores from another thread and use those as your own, but if you have different mons and sets that is okay. You also generally shouldn't pick the same three Pokémon as another poster unless they have sufficiently different sets and functions.

Innovation is great, as long as it's viable and effective. If you've got a problem with someone else's submission, feel free to provide constructive criticism. Please note that arguments and insults will not be tolerated though. Reserving cores is allowed. 1 core per person please, as this will make it easier to vote / pick a winner. The rest of the rules are below.

1. Each week I'll nominate a type core for the community to work with. You may reserve cores as long as they are done in a timely manner (~24 hours). Each core will require an explanation of its efficiency and an import of the sets used. Be sure to explain any unusual EV spreads or moves used. Each core requires 3 mons.

2. After the week has passed, voting for the best cores will take place on Saturday at 12:00 GMT. Everyone is allowed 2 votes. You may not vote for the same person twice.

3. The winners and their cores will be placed in the Hall of Fame.

For those who are unsure of what is expected, here is an excellent example that you may use for reference when making your own nominations. (S/O to Rapture. for the post).

I'm going to close this thread for the time being. I think I've gone through most of the good type cores and a few of the later themes have started to be a bit sketchy due to the process of elimination. With Sun and Moon also coming out soon I think this could be a good time to wrap the project up. Thanks to everyone who's contributed throughout the weeks! If anyone wants to take this thread over, please let me and a forum mod know about it.

In the meantime, why not use this thread to talk about which cores you've used on the ladder and worked well, and if they did work well, how did you build the rest of your team to support them?

Hello everyone, welcome to the new Archetype Cores thread! We are going to go ahead and get started with the project, as I want to set a specific schedule for the thread to operate off of. This week we are doing
. Something to note is that there will no longer be restrictions on this thread as to whether the core is balance, offense, defense, etc. The OP will shortly be updated to reflect such. Thank you Sir Kay for the idea! Alright you guys, that's all I have to say. Good luck and have fun.

We will be doing submissions till Friday, the 15th.

Reserving steelix pelliper pyroar

Pretty standard defensive core with pyroar. Steelix provides rocks and a good physical wall. Pelliper provides a good fighting check, thing that this core really apreciates, defog and is a good pivot to let specs pyroar get a kill or masive damage. Pyroar gives the core a good special attacker and a rotom check which is always great. Not much more to say just good luck Winter's Howl with this thread and will miss NV hosting this.
Steelix @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 240 HP / 128 Atk / 136 SpD
Adamant Nature

Reserving Magmortar - Swellow - Claydol

This is a core based on the wall-breaking capabilities of Magnortar, the cleaning capabilities of Swellow, and the supportive capabilities of Claydol. LO Magmortar is an unbelievebly powerful wall-breaker that has little to no switch-ins besides insanely bulky Pokemon such as Regirock which is worn down quite easily. Guts Swellow is extremely dangerous thanks Toxic Orb + Guts, boosting its two most powerful STAB attacks, Facade & Brave Bird. Swellow really appreciates Magmortar weakening or eliminating common Rock & Steel type Pokemon such as Regirock, Rhydon, Klinklang, and Pawniard so that it can easily clean up the opponents team late game. Finally, Claydol provides vital Rapid Spin support as the former two members of this core are heavily crippled by Stealth Rock. Claydol can also take on Rock & Steel types with STAB Earth Power.

Magmortar @ Life Orb
Ability: Vital Spirit
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Rash / Mild Nature
- Fire Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Grass / Focus Blast
- Earthquake

Swellow @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Facade
- Brave Bird
- U-turn
- Quick Attack / Protect

Claydol @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid / Modest Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Earth Power
- Shadow Ball
- Psychic / Psyshock

Reserving combusken + scyther + sandslash

(Combusken) @ Life Orb
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Fire Blast
- Focus Blast
- Protect
- Baton Pass

(Scyther) @ Eviolite
Ability: Swarm
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- U-turn
- Aerial Ace
- Roost

(Sandslash) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 80 HP / 252 Atk / 176 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin

This is a pretty nice core as each member of it can help the other when it comes to breaking each other checks and counters, scyther can get rid of stuff like grumpig and musharna for combusken and busken + slash gets rid of rock/steels that threaten scyther, slash also gives scyther rocks support and keeps hazards away (it can even put in some offensive work when recieving speed from busken).

Thanks for the votes last round guys! :) Pyroar and Articuno are both big hitters in NU, and Claydol provides the much needed glue to this offensive core. Pyroar and Articuno deal with most typing's, with Pyroar having a more instant impact while Articuno can better deal with slower or stally players with the combination of sub/roost. Claydol main job is to keep hazards off the field, to which the other two are weak, and provides a much needed electric immunity to stop the likes of Rotom freely volt switching. Although I usually prefer having something to outspeed Sceptile, Articuno actually deals with it pretty well, freeing up Pyroar to run the flame plate will-o set to lure things like thick fat Hariyama.

Articuno @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Freeze-Dry
- Roost
- Substitute

Claydol @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Earth Power
- Shadow Ball
- Psyshock

Pyroar @ Flame Plate
Ability: Unnerve
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Will-O-Wisp
- Hyper Voice
- Hidden Power [Grass]

Reserving Ninetales + Mantine + Steelix

Ninetales @ Life Orb
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Fire Blast
- Energy Ball
- Psyshock

Mantine @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 96 HP / 252 SpA / 160 Spe
Modest Nature
- Substitute
- Toxic
- Scald
- Air Slash

Steelix @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 244 HP / 136 Atk / 128 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Heavy Slam
- Earthquake
- Toxic / Stone Edge

This core is a really cool bulky offense core made around Ninetales, who is really cool right now as it has Psyshock to hurt Hariyama, especially after a Nasty Plot boost. Mantine is a good partner as it sets up easily on most of Ninetales' checks, like Water and Ground types. I prefer SubTox Mantine over Defog for this core because Defog is piss weak lol. Steelix rounds out the core by checking Electric, Rock, and Steel types while also setting up Rocks for the core. Shiftry is a great partner for this core as it completes the FWG core, adds Defog support, and can also hurt bulky Psychics like Musharna.

Magmortar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Vital Spirit
EVs: 104 HP / 252 SpA / 152 Spe
Modest Nature
- Fire Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Earthquake

Xatu @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 248 HP / 84 Def / 176 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Roost
- Psyshock
- Signal Beam

Piloswine @ Eviolite
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 232 HP / 252 Atk / 24 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Icicle Crash
- Ice Shard
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock

This core is a really great "bulky" offense core. Magmortar is there as it is an amazing wallbreaker and corebreaker, but it also takes care of the Grass-types that specifically crap on the other two members of this core. Xatu is a great secondary win con that can take on the Fighting-types such as Hariyama and Sawk if its Colbur Berry is intact. It also serves as a unreliable form of hazard control which is nice seeing as Magmortar and Piloswine are susceptible to all forms of entry hazards. Piloswine is there to offer up its amazing STAB combination, Stealth Rock, and really solid bulk. It also lures out the Grass-types that Magmortar can prey upon. This core, however, is very Water weak so a really solid Water check like Sceptile or Poliwrath can help ease that weakness.

Nice and standard core I've been using to pretty good effect. Av Magmortar and Rotom fan share good type synergy between the two of them with mag being a solid answer to Fire and Ice-types while Rotom has a good combination of typing + bulk to handle most pokemon with ground coverage that can threaten Magmortar. These two also do a good job of handling most balance builds since Magmortar is annoying to switch into and Rotom can either gain a ton of momentum with volt switch or cripple most electric immunities with Will o wisp. Golurk rounds out the core and gives us hazards, a normal check, and another check to fighting types as well. Another ground resist and shenanigans with Dynamic Punch also make Golurk pretty handy to have on this core. This type of core would do really well on bulky offense squads and only needs a reliable way to remove hazards to be its most effective.
Magmortar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Vital Spirit
EVs: 104 HP / 252 SpA / 152 Spe
Modest Nature
- Fire Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Focus Blast

Rotom-Fan @ Expert Belt
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hidden Power [Water]
- Air Slash
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp

Golurk @ Colbur Berry
Ability: No Guard
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

This core is more defensive-based. I think Sandslash, being the physical wall/SD’er, and Mantine, being the special wall, complement eachother nicely statwise and typewise. Adding Magmortar gives you that Ice-resist both mons need. Using this core will deal with removing hazard even though it might be overkill running defog AND rapid spin. Common Rockers such as Steelix and Rhydon will have a hard time setting their rocks too.

I suggest running SD, Eq, Knock off and Stone Edge along with a Lum Berry on Sandslash.

Sandslash @ Lum Berry
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 132 HP / 252 Atk / 124 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Swords Dance

Here are some calcs:

+2 252+ Atk Sandslash Earthquake vs. 244 HP / 0 Def Steelix: 324-384 (92 - 109%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

+2 252+ Atk Sandslash Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 16+ Def Regirock: 290-344 (79.6 - 94.5%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Or you could run a more defensive set, this time with Soft Sand.

Sandslash @ Soft Sand
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 252 HP / 132 Def / 124 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Swords Dance

Thanks to lolbro for suggesting me this set!

Mantine just does it usual job as a defogger and water-resist with Defog, Scald, Toxic and Air Slash. Maybe even running Signal Beam on it for incoming Malamar.

Mantine @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 224 Def / 16 SpD / 16 Spe
Calm Nature
- Defog
- Scald
- Air Slash/ Signal Beam
- Toxic

Magmortar, one of the most amazing wallbreakers in NU. Assault Vest buffs its already decent special bulk to check special moves and Magmortar checks most Grass-, Fire-, and Ice-types. Even though Magmortar suffers greately from hazards, Mantine makes sure of removing them.

Magmortar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Vital Spirit
EVs: 104 HP / 152 Spe / 252 SpA
Modest Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Fire Blast
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Earthquake

This is the core that I had the idea of few days ago,and I built a both Balanced and full Stall team around it which worked really well on ladder.Flareon walls every special fire/ice/grass move and takes care of many sp.attackers as well as absorbs wisps and deals with Rotom easily, its also a good answer to Aurorus which tend to be very problematic to stall teams, Mantine OR Xatu OR Both here act as hazard control for the core and Mantine can absorb all the water moves except random HP electric from samurott and also has ground immunity, while Xatu pairs well with flareon as Flareon can take many special moves for it and xatu gives it ground immunity and has magic bounce to prevent hazards, Steelix is here as physical tank and takes on many threats(except fighting pokemon) while being able to set stealth rocks.Annoying things against is it magmortar with EQ and Jynx but with right support they can be handled.

Note: 1) I have placed links to the respective post in each set of sprites. You should be able to click them and go straight to the post. 2) PrinceLucian provided an alternate in his post, and since there is no precedent I am going to create one. In the event that you leave an alternate for your core, I would like you to choose a primary option. You may see this as eliminating the point of even providing an alternate, but alternates can help further understanding of the archetypes. I will make some kind of note like this whenever one is provided, so that proper attention is given to the effort. 3) Voting will end on Monday, the 18th. Good luck everyone!
