Hello everyone, i'm rozes. Throughout my time in NU I have noticed that a good chunk of newer players do not know how to effectively team build or have no access to good teams to get started with. In an effort to rectify that, I have joined forces with several experienced NU players to host this team building lab. Here users can post Pokemon sets / cores that they would like us to build a team around and one of us can reply with their team and the team building process we used so the requester can see our thinking processes and get ideas on how to build their own teams in the future.

Also, in an effort to improve all of us and get some quality discussion for the thread, I'm going to propose that you guys take the builds we create, play ~5 games on the ladder with them at a decent rank, then link all replays and talk about how to expand your teambuilding from there. Credits go to Zebraiken for thinking of the idea!

Rules:

- Have a one paragraph description with the set / core you want us to build around and a slight idea of what kind of team you want the end result to be. Also, actually have the set(s) you want us to use in your post. This makes the process of building teams faster for all of us here.
- Do not post asking us to make use of unviable Pokemon. This is not a competition to see how good we are at team building; this is us trying to educate people on what is good and how to build effective teams. (Think C+ or above in the viability rankings)
- Please note that we can choose to ignore requests for extremely generic sets and / or cores as well as cores that have already been built around Be sure to check this post to avoid breaking this rule!
- Do not flame people for asking for a certain Pokemon or that they can't build one themselves.
- Each user is allowed one request per week and any user found requesting multiple will have their post deleted and may see further punishment.
- I'll close the thread to requests once all of us hit 3 requests at a time.
- Please remember that these teams are first drafts and as such will not be perfect. Edit them as you please.
- On that note, you are free (and highly encouraged) to suggest and post changes / critiques you've made to already posted teams that you feel improve them.
- However, you are not allowed to post your own teams here to have us modify them. We're here to build new teams, not modify older ones. If you want your own teams critiqued and modified, post them in the RMT forum, not here.
-If you request a team/pokemon/core that is already listed in the OP you'll be blacklisted from requests for 2 weeks. It takes less than a minute to check. It's your job to check, not ours. Don't be lazy.

You can see a list of all current requests and who is building that team here: http://spo.ink/teambuildinglab

How to Apply to be a Builder:
Start a PM with me and include:
  • Importables + Descriptions of 2-3 Teams you have built
  • Your accomplishments in NU
  • A team built around a current request in the lab
From there I'll discuss it with the other builders in the lab and you should know if you have been accepted fairly quickly :toast:

Looking for a New Builder

Regarding Old Requests:
Since this is basically a brand new meta since the last time the Lab was open I dropped all previous requests, so sorry if this was you D: Feel free to rerequest it here though, as long as the core is still Viable

Been kinda struggling to build around this so far but I see a lot of potential in it and would love to see what you guys can do with it. Any archetype is cool, but this set fulfills a neat niche for Balance teams so i suppose that would be preferred.

I like poliwrath right now, unfortunately i cannot seem to build a team around the poor guy. It's a decent offensive water type with decent power, a good check to omastar and dd zard, as well as the plethora of offensive water types, whilst still being a decent balance breaker. In regards to the team, something like FWG or PDF could be neat. also, blue shell

hi I'm uncreative and too lazy to build so have the same request I had from the start of november, ice spam, with some sort of wallbreaker that lures/wears down stuff like yama and mag(vanilluxe w/ explosion, psyshock jynx, whatever,), for another ice type to clean like rp aurorus, rp regice, sd abomasnow, idk

I've built a decently solid team with this core, but I want to see what the builders come up with (plus show off this core in general as it is really solid). HP Electric is really nice on Omastar as it doesn't allow Pelipper and Mantine to freely Defog away Omastar's hazards while Thunder Wave is bolded, as well as the EVs, on Mismagius because it can cripple Charizard pretty easily thanks to its Speed tier. Mismagius also provides a Fighting and Ground immunity for Omastar which is really nice.

Archeops @ Choice Band
Ability: Defeatist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Switcheroo / U-turn

Pretty uncommon set on an increasingly uncommon Pokémon, but I want to have a team that uses it because that Stone Edge is going to hit HARD. And I also want to test to see if it actually lures Musharna or not. Rock + Ground + Dark coverage is very hard to wall, especially when people are going to try and switch something in to take Acrobatics. Switcheroo also lets Archeop cripple defensive Pokémon and make them setup fodder for teammates if desired, and I doubt they'll see it coming very often.

PEOPLE SLEEP ON ME (Malamar) @ Leftovers
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature

Requesting an offensive or balanced team (BuskenPass also works, as broken playstyles are fun) based around the underrated lord that is Malamar. Malamar is amazing in this meta, as with the decline of Bug-type usage, and also other things like Heat Wave > Signal Beam on Xatu being more popular, Malamar can really thrive. Thanks in advance!

Hi NV, here's a bulky offense team based around your core. Left the Omastar set exactly as you posted it since luring defoggers is nice for controlling the hazard game. On Mismagius, I opted to run Pain Split over t-wave since zard doesn't seem too problematic and being able to keep yourself alive to handle fatter mons like audino is appreciated. Rotom-Fan is something I've really enjoyed running lately since it is a scarfer that can gain a ton of momentum and handles a lot of the grass types that annoy Omastar. Hitmonchan got a lot better with drops and is a great asset to the team with its decent power + ability to spin. Sceptile + Magmortar rounds out the team as a nice offensive core that threatens a majority of the tier. Pretty easy team to use imo so yeah enjoy! Don't forget to give feedback by the way.

Ok so I'd like a sun team based around this core of Shiftry and Charizard:

Charizard @ Choice Specs
Ability: Solar Power
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Fire Blast
- Air Slash
- Filler
- Filler

Shiftry @ Life Orb
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Knock Off
- Seed Bomb
- Sucker Punch

Ok so sun teams got a pretty huge boost in Charizard, who can maul stuff with its ability solar power in sun. I've found that it complements Shiftry especially well, and vice versa. Shiftry is imo a pretty horribly underused pokemon nowadays, and it would be nice to see it used again. Please feel free to change sets, I don't mind.

Klinklang @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 Spe
Adamant Nature

Camerupt @ Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 224 HP / 136 SpA / 148 SpD

Mesprit @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

- U-turn
- Psychic
- Signal Beam

Vileplume @ Black Sludge
Ability: Effect Spore
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature

- Sludge Bomb
- Sleep Powder
- Synthesis

Archeops
Ability: Defeatist
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Roost
- Acrobatics
- Defog / Taunt
- Earthquake

This team was built around the idea that Poliwrath could lure Mantine and Pelipper with HP Electric. We have Klinklang and Camerupt here which really appreciate their absence. Klinklang makes a great partner for Poliwrath because Klinklang can switch into non-HP Fire Vileplume and psychic types, and Poliwrath can threaten Steelix which walls Klinklang. I chose Camerupt as my rocker because it can switch into Will-O-Wisp and Volt Switch from Rotom which would other wise gain momentum when it checks Poliwrath. These Pokemon are slow without a boost, so I chose scarf Mesprit which provides this team with much needed speed as well as a Malamar check. I theoretically put Knock Off on Mesprit so Steelix could get widdled, but I've found that I never use it so I think Trick would be good here as well since since it cripples Steelix as well as gives you the option to change up your moves which is good for since the opponent can take advantage of Mesprit locked into Psychic or Signal Beam fairly easily. Healing Wish is a good option too, but I think Trick is the best option here. Vileplume was added because this team because it needed a solid fighting resist as well as a check to DD Rhydon and Barbaracle. Last on the team is Bulky Archeops. Archeops used to be an offensive variant but I wanted the bulk to be able to tank Air Slashes from specs Zard. Archeops was chosen because I wanted something fast enough to check Magmortar and switch into its Earthquake, as well as hazard control. I've been experimenting with Taunt and it can also work as hazard control if you predict correctly. I've been testing this team and it isn't the easiest to use but it can definitely win games.

Abomasnow @ Life Orb / Lum Berry
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 Atk / 92 SpA / 164 Spe
Lonely / Naughty Nature
- Swords Dance
- Ice Shard
- Seed Bomb
- Blizzard

Requesting an offensive team around this variant of SD Abomasnow. Abomasnow is one of the coolest Pokemon in the tier, with an almost unresisted stab combo (and the resists are pretty physically frail), breaks through common defensive cores and even has priority for offense. Mixed SD is something Punchshroom suggested when it dropped and it seems extremely fun to play with and potentially bluff the standard mixed Aboma set. Also, seeing how Lanturn is the go-to fire resist atm it has even more opportunities to set up. Item choice is preference, I just figured it would be good to switch in on a Scald and not care about the burn, and it gets worn down pretty fast with sr + lo.

Hey Aurosis, here's the team you requested with Swords Dance Charizard, which turned out to be bulky offense instead of balance. I chose Prinplup over an of the other Defoggers such as Mantine and Pelipper because this team would be man-handled by Rock Polish Rhydon if it gets a free set up opportunity otherwise. Signal Beam over Stealth Rock looks weird here, but I've always found keeping off hazards while trying to set up your own puts too much pressure on Prinplup. It helps a lot with stuff like Malamar and ensures things like Sceptile don't switch in for free. Next up I went with Sceptile because it's able to take down Pokemon that would otherwise give Charizard a hard time sweeping such as Lanturn, Prinplup, and Rhydon, as well as pressure most Stealth Rock users. Hidden Power Psychic is used over the more common Hidden Power Ice because Rock Slide already covers Flying-types and you still hit things like Vileplume anyways. The only thing it misses out on is Xatu, but hitting Garbodor and Weezing proves to be more beneficial on this team. Defensive Mesprit is this team's support unit and main switch in to Fighting-types, being able to set up Stealth Rock, bring back a Pokemon with Healing Wish, and provide a slow U-turn to bring in frailer Pokemon. Up next, to make sure I have a switch in to Normal-types I chose dual dance Rhydon as it acts a very nice wincon for the team and takes advantage of a Choice-locked Swellow, whom otherwise would run through this team. Lastly, we have Choice Scarf Rotom which acts as this teams revenge killer and response to Xatu and a +1 Vivillon. This team is reletively easy to use and I've had a lot of fun testing it, so enjoy!

This set sounds really interesting since it checks sceptile, beats most fighting types 1v1 and acts like a wincon in only one team slot. Bulky Offense/Balance are nice playstyles.

Took me a good few tries to get this right, mainly because I was trying too hard to cover the terrible weaknesses that dual ice gives you but I finally got something that I'm very happy with! Obviously this core is very fighting weak, hariyama in particular so my first addition was bulky colbur mismagius. This gave me a decent fighting switch in that would also serve as a spin blocker for the team. Dual status is pretty necessary in this meta as it means stuff like zard and pyroar can't get a free switch vs you. Next I added lum berry stealth rocks pinsir. This gave me a secondary fighting resist, a very consistent rocker and a sceptile answer. Very consistent in setting rocks and putting on pressure and a very underrated mon imo. With 3 rock weaks and a sash mon I needed hazard control so sd spin kabutops was next. While it's not the most consistent of spinners it fit best here as it gives me much needed priority to make up for the slow team and serves as a normal + bird resist. Finally I added mixed lo sceptile to make up for the slowness of the team, give me a second water resist and serve as a nice revenge killer. Overall this team has been incredibly fun to use and I've really enjoyed using it, I wouldn't say it's the easiest team to use since it doesn't really have much of a defensive backbone and you have to rely on keeping up offensive presence. Hope you enjoy it!
edit: i changed it to specs snow warning auro because honestly rp is bad and specs just makes the team so much better

As a precursor, the nicknames are named after Pegboard Nerds songs (which are linked in the import). Starting off with the Abomasnow set, I decided to bump up the Speed a little more to creep the occasional Adamant Mawile and the stuff which creeps around that range, the 76 Special Attack EVs still have a really high chance to OHKO Vileplume and Gourgeist-XL. Next, Choice Specs Mantine was added as it has excellent type synergy with Abomasnow, Mantine acts as a soft check to Fire and Fighting types while Abomasnow threatens Lanturn. We chose a Timid nature to outpace Adamant Samurott and Modest Ludicolo as well as most variants of Magmortar, but do note that it can be rather weak at times. Signal Beam was picked for the filler slot because Malamar can be really annoying if you lose Scyther, but if you'd rather hit Lanturn and Quagsire, HP Grass isnt a terrible option, HP Electric is probably decent in this slot to try out as well. Steelix was added for well, the obvious things that Steelix does, but having a Normal and Flying resist was pretty important and it fit pretty well, especially with Mantine. We felt that the standard tank set was a bit too passive for this team, so we went with the mixed Life Orb Sheer Force lure set with Flash Cannon to smack around Weezing and Thunder Fang to hit Mantine and Pelipper. Scyther adds a fast revenge killer and a more sturdy Fighting check, albeit the set not being very bulk invested. This Scyther set is a bit unconventional, with Knock Off chosen over Swords Dance, as I didn't feel that Swords Dance really benefitted the team a ton and being able to hit non-scarf Rotom as well as remove the recovery of Steelix and Weezing is rather useful. Standard Pursuit Skuntank patches up a bunch of holes the team had, mainly to the likes of Mega Audino, Psychic-types, and Rotom. Lastly, Hitmonchan acts as another general special tank and a third priority user. The EV spread avoids the 2HKO from non-Life Orb Magmortar's Fire Blast the majority of the time. While it took a bit of tweaking to get to this final build, I'm pretty happy with the outcome.

Here are two replays using the team on ladder (1,2)

Feel free to make adjustments to the team and post any feedback that you have here. Enjoy!

Hey, boltsandbombers.

I've used the team in ~20 ladder matches and the team did well. However, I noticed some things that gave this team trouble: Rock/Water types such as Kabutops and Barbaracle, and Fire types, specifically LO Charizard, which only needed Mantine weakened. Also, Hitmonchan isn't the most reliable spinner, as it's rendered useless if the opponent has a good spinblocker (bulky Rotom or Mismagius), and with 3 Rock weak mons on the team I felt I needed something more reliable as hazard control.

I decided to add Modest Specs Poliwrath instead of Mantine, which gave me a nice hard check to Kabutops and Barbaracle, special priority and a very good secondary STAB, while only losing a bit of speed. As a different form of hazard removal, I decided to go with bulky Defog Archeops with Earth Power to lure Steelix. It's also over base 106 speed, meaning I could use it to better check Pyroar and opposing Scyther should Steelix go down. But most importantly, it gave me a fairly reliable check to LO Charizard, as it takes less than half from Fire Blast.

With these changes, however, I feel mons like Bulk Up Gurdurr and Sawk put in much more work since my only switch in to them is no bulk Scyther, but overall, I'm very much pleased with this team. I'd like to thank both of the builders, the team's very fun. Keep it up.

And the nicknames are sick.

Hi TTFTW. Bouffalant was a tricky Pokemon to build around. On many levels it's a poor mans Tauros so it's especially important to play to its strengths, mainly its better bulk and access to stronger boosting moves. Anyways, to start off the team I went with an offensive core of mixed Sceptile and Bouffalant since scep puts a lot of pressure on common normal resists and really picks up the slack with Bouff's lack of speed. As far as the fourth move on Boufflant goes, a lot of things work in that slot. Superpower, Stone Edge and Facade all make for viable options with their own advantages but I opted to run Megahorn since people are still paranoid about getting swept by Malamar. Next I used a solid defensive core of Steelix, Mantine, and Clefairy. All have their standard sets and you can add your own speed creep as you see fit, only changes I ended up making is deciding to run Haze on Mantine since 3 other members of the team run status moves so having the extra insurance versus set up sweepers is pretty good. I also altered Clefairy's ev spread to better handle rotom since the team kind of got harassed by it at this point and being able to whittle Rotom down or set up on it really helps. Lastly, I decided to tie the team together with bulky sd zard since Clefairy appreciated something that can switch into weaker knock offs and it gave me a decent fighting check which will be important if sawk isn't banned. The team is probably a bit more balanced then you expected, but I tried to make up for that by running a ton of win cons

Song and nicknames are from Touhou, hope you enjoy the team bro.
