Set Description
=========

Heatran leverages its high Special Attack and decent Speed tier to be one of the tier's best bulky wallbreakers with this set. Magma Storm is its Fire-type STAB move of choice as it combined high base power with trapping damage that chips away at switch-ins like Rotom-W, Garchomp and Landorus-T. Earth Power hits Pokemon who resist Magma Storm for super effective damage, such as Victini, opposing Heatran and Toxapex, giving Heatran great coverage. Taunt in combination with the aforementioned two moves allows Heatran to trap and remove passive switch-ins like Toxapex and Blissey by preventing them from healing. It also deters the use of status moves, such as Thunder Wave from Clefable, Stealth Rock from Garchomp and Landorus-T, and Defog from Zapdos. Eruption is Heatran's strongest STAB move that does not risk the chance of missing like Magma Storm, allowing Heatran to spam the move when healthy to punch holes through teams. Toxic is an alternative if putting long-term checks to Heatran like Gastrodon, Hippowdon and Dragonite is desirable. Stealth Rock can also be run in this moveslot if Heatran wants to take advantage of the switches it forces to set up entry hazards, since it is one of the best Stealth Rock setters in the metagame with its ability to pressure some of the tier's best Defoggers in Zapdos, Corviknight and Tornadus-T. Air Balloon is the item of choice for this set so Heatran can be temporarily immune to Ground-type attacks, allowing it to take advantage of Ground-types that only have Earthquake as an attacking move, such as specially defensive Garchomp and Hippowdon. 4 Defense EVs ensure that Heatran can live Sacred Sword from unboosted Kartana after Stealth Rock. Offensive Heatran's nature depends on what threats it wants to beat: it can run a Timid nature to outspeed Modest Nidoking and Choice Band Rillaboom, while a Modest nature gives it a guaranteed OHKO on Corviknight and a 2HKO on Hippowdon with Eruption. Flash Fire can be used if Heatran desires to leverage its amazing defensive typing to stymie Volcarona and make Pokemon like Victini, Blacephalon, and opposing Heatran second-guess their moves, but Flame Body allows it to punish contact moves such as Knock Off from Weavile, U-turn from Landorus-T and Tornadus-T, and Double Iron Bash from Melmetal.

Offensive Heatran fits on Bulky Offense teams that appreciate its wallbreaking prowess while having the ability to pivot it in safely. Slowbro is a wonderful teammate, as it can take on powerful Water-types like Urshifu-R and Barraskewda and bring Heatran onto the field safely with Teleport. Moreoever, Slowbro holds the distinction of being a solid check to offensive Ground-types like Garchomp and Landorus-T with its good bulk and STAB Scald. Tornadus-T and Zapdos can also check the aforementioned Ground-types while having pivoting moves in U-turn and Volt Switch to provide safe entry for Heatran. Furthermore, they can be the first line of defense against Grass-types like Rillaboom and Kartana to preserve Heatran's health. Zapdos in particular matches up extremely well against rain teams, who pressure Heatran by spamming Water-type moves and weakening the power of its Fire-type moves. As Heatran's Speed is quite mediocre, it appreciates teammates that can force out faster threats, making Dragapult, Weavile, and Choice Scarf users like Tapu Lele, Kartana, and Urshifu-R good offensive partners. Weavile and Kartana notably synergize well with Heatran's Stealth Rock, as Weavile can remove Heavy-Duty Boots from Buzzwole and Toxapex while Kartana can do the same to Tornadus-T and Zapdos. Since offensive Heatran lacks the bulk investment to take on threats that its defensive sets can check, such as Dragapult, Tapu Lele and Weavile, a secondary Steel-type like Ferrothorn or Melmetal is recommended. Ferrothorn deserves a special mention as its Spikes can form a hazard stacking core with Heatran's Stealth Rock, which can wear down Heatran's grounded switch-ins like Tapu Fini and Garchomp extremely quickly.
