Week 5: Magnezone
1702618688073.png

Art from Merlusa

An OU mainstay since its introduction in generation 4, Magnezone's viability has taken a hit this generation due to losing access to moves like hidden power fire that allowed it to trap and remove steel types such as Ferrothorn and Scizor. However, it has somewhat adapted to this by making use of its newfound combination of iron defence and body press while its breaking power is still noteworthy when equipped with choice specs. While both sets do encompass most of what Magnezone does in this metagame, there is still some leeway with how you can mix and match its moves to pick which steel types it can trap or lure before removing. I hope some creative sets will be posted at the end of next week!

Magnezone @ Leftovers
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Iron Defense
- Body Press
- Thunderbolt
- Toxic / Teleport

Magnezone @ Choice Specs
Ability: Magnet Pull / Analytic
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest/Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Flash Cannon
- Volt Switch
- Toxic / Body Press

You have until 11:59pm EST on Thursday, 4th January to submit your sets.

Magnezone @ Air Balloon
Ability: Magnet Pull
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 248 HP / 56 Def / 140 SpD / 64 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Iron Defense
- Body Press
- Thunderbolt
- Mirror Coat

This set attempts to trap Ferrothorn and the steel birds while completely flipping the script on one of the steel types that Magnezone has never been able to trap: Heatran. The SPD investment allows Magnezone to always live a magma storm from timid offensive Heatran (204 SPD EVs can be used if you want to be safe against modest Heatran, but it affects Magnezone's ability to reliably remove Corviknight and Ferrothorn) and retaliate with mirror coat. 64 SPE EVs ensures that it outspeeds Corviknight with no speed investment while the DEF investment allows it to take a banded low kick from Weavile from full in a pinch. Big thank you to Scalescale for showing this set in CPL :woop:

Magnezone @ Custap Berry
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 244 Def / 200 SpA / 64 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Iron Defense
- Body Press
- Steel Beam

This Magnezone still does its job in trapping steels, while having the added benefit of being able to potentally get suprise KOs on revenge killers with a Custap Berry. This idea works best when playing against Ferrothorn lacking Knock Off, as you can position yourself to be in Custap range with Iron Barbs chip as you KO it. Then, when common revenge killers like Garchomp or Heatran come in, you can get the jump on them and knock them out with a powerful Body Press. Also, with the addition of Steel Beam, you are able to also get surprise Custap KOs on fighting resistant revenge killers such Tapu Lele and Dragapult - and chunk Landorus-Therian for huge damage. Lastly, a well positioned Custap Thunderbolt can easily remove even more offensive threats such as Urshifu-Rapid and Offensive Volcanion. Magnezone has 200 Spatk evs to always kill Dragapult with Steel Beam after Stealth Rocks, and 64 Speed to outspeed 0 Speed Corviknight.

Notable Calcs

Magnezone @ Expert Belt
Ability: Magnet Pull
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 248 Def / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Body Press
- Flash Cannon
- Iron Defense

This allows it to output a lot of damage on stuff like ferro with a expert belt boosted iron defense, flash cannon to hit clef much harder, this also allows it to push damage on water types such as CM fini, volcanion, and others...

Melm can also be pressured thanks to expert belt body press. WIth a modest nature this allows it to click a lot of buttons and have much more threatening potential

I find it difficult to believe that AV Magnezone has not been nommed yet!

Magnezone @ Assault Vest
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 252 Def / 100 SpA / 72 SpD / 84 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Body Press
- Discharge
- Mirror Coat
- Flash Cannon

This set allows Magnezone to stay in more often after getting its trapped KO and offer some defensive ability in matchups where it is less useful. Max defense + Bold lets it do as much as possible with Body Press since we aren't running ID. 72 SpD avoids the 2HKO from Dragapult Shadow Ball after rocks. 84 Speed lets it outspeed Skarmory, which may not seem important at first but can be very helpful if you use Magnezone as a special tank earlier in the game but still want to trap and KO Skarm. Rest of the investment is put into SpA.

Week 6: Slowking-Galar

Artist: namako_plum
The diseased evil line of Slowpoke royalty, Slowking-Galar made a strong impression in IoA SS OU with its amazing dual typing, good bulk/ability, high special attack and deep movepool, with players crowning it as the strongest member of the Slowpoke family:changry:. While assault vest and certain nasty plot variants are what you typically see from the purple salamander, its movepool allows it to run unorthodox sets to great effect. Please note that nasty plot sets with a different EV spread and moveset are allowed.

Slowking-Galar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 12 Def / 124 SpA / 120 SpD
Calm Nature
- Future Sight / Psychic
- Sludge Bomb
- Flamethrower
- Scald / Ice Beam

Slowking-Galar @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 44 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Bold Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Psyshock
- Sludge Bomb / Flamethrower
- Scald / Trick

You have until 11:59pm EST on Thursday, 18th January to submit your sets.
