Introduction

  • Hello Tutees and Tutors! Welcome to the new Battling101 project "Tutee Tournament Analyses" hosted by Steve Angello and me, Toupip . We are going to have a look over one of the final battles and share our thoughts and commentaries. We are also going to comment on the way they built their teams, how the battle went and how we would have played it.
  • The purpose of this project is to help tutees and give them insight on how we - the tutors - would have played. Last but not least, we will explain to you guys how they could have avoided some of their misplays and how they could have played it better.

    Round 90-91
Team Analysis

  • Looking at team preview, we can see that Obliviate is using a bulky offense team, while Ox brought a balanced team. Ox the fox brought a fire water grass core consisting of the standard Starmie, Talonflame and Ferrothorn core . Obliavate brought an unconventional pokemon in Crawdaunt, which is not used much but threatens his balanced core very much. While Crawdaunt looks very threatening to Oxs' team, Kyurem-B is looking very crucial to Oblivates team, as his only Ice resistances are Starmie and Crawdaunt, which get killed by the potential coverage move Fusion Bolt. Kyurem-B can take advantage of his defensive core consisting of Venusaur, Gliscor and the potential bulky Garchomp.

Set Speculation:

  • Obliviate's team: Starmie / Venusaur / Crawdaunt / Tornadus-Therian / Gliscor / Garchomp.
  • As we said before, Obliviate brought a bulky offense team, with a solid stallbreaker in Crawdaunt. After a closer look at the team we can guess that Starmie is a bulky spin variant with Scald and Ice beam as an offensive slot due to his incredible Gliscor SD weakness, while Venusaur is probably an offensive variant with the lack of a solid Ferrothorn check. While looking at potential weaknesses we came to the conclusion that Garchomp seems to be bulky and carries Rocky Helmet, because the team struggles against physical attackers like Scizor, Metagross and Flying-Types. From there, we can probably guess that Tornadus is an Assault Vest variant, which helps Obliviate handle Gardevoir-Mega, Gengar and Landorus-I, since Landorus commonly runs Hidden Power Ice these days. Gliscor is probably a Swords Dancer which can give him a solid win condition against Stall and Balanced and prevent the team from being too passive in general.
  • Ox the Box's team: Talonflame / Starmie / Ferrothorn / Hippowdon / Lopunny / Kyurem-Black.
  • We can assume that he's using Stallbreaker Talonflame, because Clefable looks very threatening to his team otherwise. It is essential to have hazard control if you use Talonflame. A bulky Starmie with Reflect Type seems to fit the build well, as you do not want to get Pursuited by a Tyranitar and lose your hazard controller and limit Talonflame due to its Stealth Rocks weakness. Ferrothorn probably carries its standard Spikes set as it is simply his best set. Hippowdown seems to be a mixed wall with Stone Edge, otherwise, an opposing Talonflame would be very annoying. Nailing it on the switch in can be very good. Kyurem-B mostly run three attacks with Roost, while carrying a Life Orb to boost its offensive moves. It is Kyurem's best set and the way to go here. Lopunny is the Mega of the team and is either a Power-up Punch set, because it sets up rather easily and breaks the most common defensive cores or a Fake Out set.

Win Conditions:

  • Obliviate
  • Obliviate has a pretty bad match-up against Ox, looking at how Kyurem-B can give him a hard time in this battle, but nonetheless he still has a shot assuming he's using the right sets as listed above. Obliviate should normally lead with Tornadus-T since it's his main way to hit Kyurem-B as well as possible. He has the choice to Knock Off it and make Kyurem-B less threatening as it can then tank one Ice beam or Fusion Bolt without the LO boost. Then later in the battle, when he gets the opportunity to do so, he should try to set up Stealth Rock and keep them up by pressuring Starmie with Tornadus/Crawdaunt/Venusaur as that is his main method to limit Kyurem-B's switch ins. This means Obliviate is forced to make double switches that can lead to Ox sacking Starmie to Rapid Spin or weakening Kyurem-B. After all of that, he will normally be able to clean with Tornadus-T since Ox has no flying check and Talonflame will be too weakened by Stealth Rock to tank Hurricane spam.
  • OxtheBox
  • OxtheBox has a really good match-up against Obliviates team, because he lacks a really good Kyurem-B switch-in. His switch ins for it are Starmie and Crawdaunt which are both threatened out by Fusion Bolt. Starmie can stay in and pray for a Scald burn, which is not worth it. The best thing he can do, is switch Kyurem-B in as much as possible and hit something very hard with Ice Beam. Obliviates defensive core can not switch into it. All Ox has to do, is to prevent Obliviate from laying down hazards and set up his own Stealth Rocks. The core of Talonflame and Kyurem-B pressures balanced builds like Obliviate's a lot, because his only flying check is most likely, a bulky Garchomp, which can be played around rather easy, for example by burning it. The reason why Kyurem-B is very good against him is because nothing wants to take a hit and the only Pokemon that can outspeed Kyurem is Tornadus-T, which gets handled by a specially defensive Talonflame.
Game Analysis

  • We see Ox the box on the right field, while Oblivate is on the left. Both players have picked their leads and are ready for an amazing game. Obliviate leads off with Garchomp, which should set up Stealth Rocks as soon as possible, because they pressure Oxs' team significantly, even if that is not the optimal choice. Considering Ox could have lead with Kyurem-B and have threatened the entire team, Obliviate would then have to decide what dies. While Ox has more options with his lead choice, he picks Talonflame, which is a really smart lead, because a potential Will-o-Wisp set can burn every pokemon on Oblivate's team and it can also Taunt the Garchomp. So basically Ox has the match-up and lead advantage.
  • The first key point occurred in turn 8 when Obliviate sacrifices his Garchomp, the most important pokemon on his team against the offensive threats of his opponent, by switching it into the incoming Ice Beam. It was a nice prediction by Ox, because his Ice Beam switch-ins can not do much against Kyurem-B anyway. So clicking Ice Beam was the correct play. Obliviates choice was not the optimal choice, because his Garchomp was needed for many of his opponent's pokemon. Gliscor seems rather useless, because the Talon, Mega Lopunny, Ferrothorn and Kyurem-B core pressures it too much. So sacking Gliscor would have been the right play. This fodder means he can use Stealth Rock later on in the game and get a free switch into Tornadus-T, after losing Gliscor. Till the next key turn occurred, the battle went into an U-Turn and Knock Off spam of Obliviate and a stallfest between both Starmies.
  • In turn 31, Obliviate fodders his Mega Venusaur for no reason, which was a key member against Starmie and Mega Lopunny at this point, as Garchomp already died. After Obliviate lost his Mega Venusaur, he is forced to rely on his own Starmie to wall Ox's Starmie. Foddering the Venusaur was a pretty bad play, because it means Obliviate has to play more risky with Tornadus-T and a burnt Tornadus-T would then get walled by Talonflame later in the battle. So sacrificing Venusaur was not the optimal play, if you think long term.
  • Ox was playing great until later on in the battle, a mysterious misplay appeared, Ox sent his talonflame in and was about to sack it to Crawdaunt, which is a pretty bad play since Hippowdon was pretty much useless at this point, while Talonflame could still check Tornadus and Roost. Talonflame was helpful in the endgame scenario and Ox almost choked it away, as he could have opened himself up to a lategame Tornadus-T sweep.
  • The last key turn is turn 54 when Ox sent his win condition Mega-Lopunny in on a Scald. This play involved unnecessary risk as, if Lopunny was burnt by scald, it would be useless to Ox and would faint later on in the battle which would result in Ox's loss. This in addition to not sacking Hippowdon, which was pretty useless from thereon.
Conclusion

  • To draw a conclusion, we would say that the match was pretty much decided at team preview by match up and teambuilding. Facing a Kyurem-B without a solid answer was very significant as was showcased in the battle. Misplays by both players made the battle very exciting to watch, even if it ended in a stallfest. Last but not least congratulations to Oxthefox for winning this round's tutee tournament.

We hope you enjoyed reading it ! Yours Toupip and Steve Angello.

Cool analysis; just for reference, you can feel free to approach a GP member for grammar checks as well (if I understand what you meant correctly); something like this is basically like an article, and you can just hl a GP member in #grammar to do so. having watched the match myself i didn't notice a lot of this stuff, good job!

We noticed that our last analyses has inspired several people and we also got some comments asking for another, i would like to thanks everyone that liked it.
Though we felt bad since you had to wait until next tutee tournament final which will probably be in like 3 weeks, so according to Plus it might be better to extend our project and make it for others tournaments such as Smogon Tour, Official Smogon Tournament.

Then we decided to make one analyses every 2 weeks, but that kind of article is not that simple to write and that's why we were looking for some confirmed players to help us, they will be added to our conversation and will be able to work on it with us. I should mention that we will not accept everyone i mean we are looking for smart and at least confirmed players which mean that you will probably have to do an interview with our actual staff to be added. We are also looking for Grammar Check because it can be hard to find people that want to do it, so if you're willing for this let me know.

You're interested by our project and want to help ? PM Steve Angello and Leftiez, we will give you an interview as soon as possible.
Grammar Check doesn't need interview (One or two people max assuming you're pretty good in english).

Alright, Thanks to following users: Cicada , GeeMick , Pure Demize .
Pure Demize was added because he already helped us as a grammar check last time. While Cicada and GeeMick answered to our interview with such great comments and analyses, so we think they are deserving of our project.

They will now work and help us to write analyses. Next analyses will be based on OST 11 final stay connect ;]
