When you want that Wisp to miss... [UU Warstory]

Not open for further replies.
At the time of posting this, I have played UU continuously for a total of 6 days. This happened yesterday, so I was playing UU for five days. Let's get that cleared up.

UU for me began when I decided to see exactly how those 'Mons too weak for OU functioned; so, I slapped together a team, and proceeded to... Lose. A lot. That was two months ago. Then, after I fell from my leaderboard spot in OU (#16) a week back (I was really depressed on how I lost 50 CRE over three days of playing, from 1561 to 1492) I decided to go to UU.

And viola, for some odd reason it's been spiritually healing to play in UU. I'm back on the leaderboard (In the 20s) in OU and somehow, despite the fact I'm an idiot for using Flame Orb Milotic (Actually, it's won me 60% of my games just by out-tanking my opponents), I'm in the 1450s. Someone tell me what the hell happened!!

I was on the UU ladder last night (US Eastern) when I encountered someone by the name of Nails... And so it began!

Nails's moves will look like this.
GaRgAnt's moves will look like this.
Other text will look like this.
Scores will be shown after each KO.
Rules: Ladder Match, Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, OHKO Clause, Evasion Clause, Species Clause, Strict Damage Clause
Nails sent out Hariyama (lvl 100 Hariyama ?).
GaRgAnt sent out Mesprit (lvl 100 Mesprit).

(100%) v. (100%)

I always deal with lead mesprit the same way. Fake out because they don’t have priority, switch to Skuntank to take the trick/psychic/stealth rock and pursuit for the early 6-5. Works pretty well.

If you hate Machamp in OU, then you sure as hell hate Hariyama in UU. First time I've seen a Hariyama lead since I came back to UU, but what the hell, Mesprit should be bulky enough to take a Payback while I Psychic the damn thing...

------------------------------------

Hariyama used Fake Out.
A critical hit!
Mesprit lost 30% of its health.
Mesprit flinched!

(70%) v. (100%)

Crap. Okay, it's not exactly Machamp, but still damn close.

---
Nails switched in Skuntank (lvl 100 Skuntank ?).
Mesprit used Psychic.
It doesn't affect Skuntank...

Damn, that was a nice move. Stupid Dark/Poison types... Better set up the Rocks.

(70%) v. (100%)

---
Mesprit used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around the foe's team!
Skuntank used Pursuit.
It's super effective!
Mesprit lost 43% of its health.
Skuntank lost 10% of its health.

(37%) v. (90%)

Why'd it have to be Pursuit? Whatever, I think I'll add one last touch before I die... If parahax lets me...

---
Mesprit used Thunder Wave.
Skuntank is paralysed! It may be unable to move!
Skuntank used Pursuit.
It's super effective!
Mesprit lost 27% of its health.
GaRgAnt's Mesprit fainted.
(6-5, advantage Nails)
Skuntank lost 10% of its health.

(0%) v. (80%)
(Paralyzed)

Dammit. Parahax doesn't.

Everything going according to plan.
---
GaRgAnt switched in Milotic (lvl 100 Milotic ?).

(100%) v. (80%)
(Paralyzed)

Milotic is kind of a pain, and since paralasis sucks, I’m gonna explode to kill a second poke free. Cmon parahax, don’t screw me now!

If I can get him para-ed for one turn, Flame Orb will kick in, making my Milotic the tank to end all tanks...

Milotic used Surf.
Skuntank lost 51% of its health.
Skuntank used Explosion.
Milotic lost 100% of its health.
GaRgAnt's Milotic fainted.
(6-4)
Nails's Skuntank fainted.
(5-4)

(0%) v. (0%)
(Paralyzed)

Dammit para. Why do you hate me so.

---
Back to my lead to hopefully score a decent matchup.

Nails switched in Hariyama (lvl 100 Hariyama ?).
GaRgAnt switched in Spiritomb (lvl 100 Spiritomb ?).
Pointed stones dug into Hariyama.
Hariyama lost 6% of its health.
Spiritomb is exerting its pressure!

(100%) v. (94%)

Hariyama used Stone Edge.
Hariyama's attack missed!
Spiritomb used Trick.
Spiritomb obtained Leftovers!
Hariyama obtained Choice Band!

(100%) v. (94%)

I have it now locked into a single move... But a Choice Band Stone Edge off base 120 attack? I think it's PP stalling time. He wasn't carrying an orb after the Fake Out, so it's gotta be a Thick Fat Hariyama...

That sucks… whatever, keep stone edgeing, for lack of a better alternative.
---
Hariyama used Stone Edge.
Hariyama's attack missed!
Spiritomb used Will-o-wisp.
Spiritomb's attack missed!

(100%) v. (94%)

GODDAMMIT WILL-O-WISP. YOU TOO?

In a perfect world they both would’ve hit (running guts). That turn sucked, but didn’t really affect anything.
---
Hariyama used Stone Edge.
Spiritomb lost 59% of its health.
Spiritomb used Will-o-wisp.
Spiritomb's attack missed!
Spiritomb's leftovers restored its health a little!
Spiritomb restored 6% of its health.

(47%) v. (94%)

I think I'll cry.

Finally it hits, but guts is still off. He’ll switch, so I might as well get a hard hit on whatever switches in with one of my last 2 pp.
---
Hariyama used Stone Edge.
A critical hit!
Spiritomb lost 48% of its health.
GaRgAnt's Spiritomb fainted.
(5-3)

(0%) v. (94%)

I just lost one of my revenge killers, since Spiritomb was carrying both Shadow Sneak and Sucker Punch.

Wait a minute... "Spiritomb is exerting its pressure"?

Stone Edge has 8 PP max, and luck gave my Spiritomb 4 turns to soak up Stone Edges...

Time to send my set-up sweeper and hope he doesn't have a Milotic...

Or he stays in… that crit would’ve been nice earlier. Now I have to switch out or struggle.
---
GaRgAnt switched in Feraligatr (lvl 100 Feraligatr ?).

(100%) v. (94%)

Nails switched in Milotic (lvl 100 Milotic ?).
Pointed stones dug into Milotic.
Milotic lost 12% of its health.
Feraligatr used Dragon Dance.
Feraligatr's attack was raised.
Feraligatr's speed was raised.
Milotic's leftovers restored its health a little!
Milotic restored 6% of its health.

(100%) v. (93%)

Did I just jinx myself?

---
GaRgAnt switched in Venusaur (lvl 100 Venusaur ?).
Milotic used Hidden Power.
It's not very effective...
Venusaur lost 5% of its health.
Venusaur's leftovers restored its health a little!
Venusaur restored 5% of its health.
Milotic's leftovers restored its health a little!
Milotic restored 6% of its health.

(100%) v. (93%)

HP Electric? Huh, expected a Toxic. Time for disabling.

I got off without having to face a dd gatr, but venasaur… rapes my team. I’ll sac tomb to sleep and go from there.
---
Nails switched in Spiritomb (lvl 100 Spiritomb ?).
Spiritomb is exerting its pressure!
Pointed stones dug into Spiritomb.
Spiritomb lost 12% of its health.
Venusaur used Sleep Powder.
Venusaur's attack missed!

(100%) v. (87%)

Megaton bullshit. Hmm... I don't see Leftovers, so I assume it's banded... But I guess the final unrevealed member of my team can make... Some... Use of it...

Would’ve loved for that to hit. I’ll try a wisp, since I’m sleeping next turn anyways (75% chance for sleep powder, never know)
---
GaRgAnt switched in Blaziken (lvl 100 Blaziken ?).
Spiritomb used Will-o-wisp.

(100%) v. (87%)

Score. His Spiritomb either eats a Fire Blast, or he switches. For kicks, since I think I've lost, I think I'll just Blast it.

Good prediction here, but milotic can tank blaziken. Switch in, recover, and go from there.

---
Nails switched in Milotic (lvl 100 Milotic ?).
Pointed stones dug into Milotic.
Milotic lost 12% of its health.
Blaziken used Fire Blast.
It's not very effective...
A critical hit!
Milotic lost 50% of its health.
Blaziken lost 10% of its health.
Milotic's leftovers restored its health a little!
Milotic restored 6% of its health.

(90%) v. (44%)

...Dammit... It still has 44% left... If Fire Blast normally does 50 percent, I can't be sure if HP Grass will hit... I pray that thing doesn't have that much Defense EVs, because I happen...

That sucks. Hopefully milotic can recover, or else I’m in serious trouble.

To have a move called...

---
Blaziken used Superpower.
Milotic lost 44% of its health.
Nails's Milotic fainted.
(4-3)
Blaziken's attack was lowered.
Blaziken's defence was lowered.
Blaziken lost 10% of its health.

Excellente.

Crap.
---
Nails switched in Mesprit (lvl 100 Mesprit).
Pointed stones dug into Mesprit.
Mesprit lost 12% of its health.

(80%) v. (87%)

You've gotta be kidding me... A Mesprit? NOW? Bye, Blaziken...

Blaziken used Fire Blast.
Mesprit lost 66% of its health.
Blaziken lost 10% of its health.
Mesprit used Psychic.
It's super effective!
Blaziken lost 70% of its health.
GaRgAnt's Blaziken fainted.
(4-2)
Mesprit's leftovers restored its health a little!
Mesprit restored 6% of its health.

(0%) v. (36%)

Hmm, I did a number on it. But the fact that Blaziken and Mesprit are both base 80 speed Pokemon, and Blaziken outsped, tells me that it's a rather bulky Mesprit at the cost of speed. I was running a 240 Special Attack/252 Speed/ 16 Attack spread with a Naive nature, trying to make Blaziken a mini-Mixmence, so I'm confident that my max speed Jolly Venusaur can put it to sleep- Please, hax gods, don't screw me over now...

At least he’s revenged and I’m up 4-2. But I’m probably sleeping here, yet I can hope for another miss. Can’t switch out or I could be down a poke and have a useless mesprit.
---
GaRgAnt switched in Venusaur (lvl 100 Venusaur ?).
Venusaur used Sleep Powder.
Mesprit fell asleep!
Mesprit is fast asleep!
Mesprit's leftovers restored its health a little!
Mesprit restored 6% of its health.

(100%) v. (42%)
(Asleep)

At last, some good stuff... Actually, the crit on Milotic was the first good thing, but now I have set-up fodder.

Switch in tomb to wisp, not much else to do.
---
Nails switched in Spiritomb (lvl 100 Spiritomb ?).
Spiritomb is exerting its pressure!
Pointed stones dug into Spiritomb.
Spiritomb lost 12% of its health.
Venusaur used Swords Dance.
Venusaur's attack was sharply raised.

(100%) v. (75%)

I pray to god that this goddamn program will pick the 4 out of 5 chance that I'll hit...

---
Venusaur used Power Whip.
Spiritomb lost 75% of its health.
Nails's Spiritomb fainted.
(3-2)

(100%) v. (0%)

Bingo.

Or not. Primeape is faster, and with a choice band plus super effective ice punch, I should be going up 3-1.
---
Nails switched in Primeape (lvl 100 Primeape ?).
Pointed stones dug into Primeape.
Primeape lost 6% of its health.

(100%) v. (94%)

Playing OU eariler today made me aware that Primeapes sometimes carry Ice Punch. I'm sure this one does, because what else can it do to Venusaur?

Primeape used Ice Punch.
It's super effective!
Venusaur lost 87% of its health.
Venusaur used Power Whip.
Primeape lost 94% of its health.
Nails's Primeape fainted.
(2-2)
Venusaur's leftovers restored its health a little!
Venusaur restored 6% of its health.

(19%) v. (0%)

Damn, that hurt. Was that thing Banded?

Venasaur’s pretty bulky I guess. Whatever, fake out koes and cc then does a number on Gatr. I have this game won.
---
Nails switched in Hariyama (lvl 100 Hariyama ?).
Pointed stones dug into Hariyama.
Hariyama lost 6% of its health.

(19%) v. (87%)

The hell is he thinking? I'm faster than a base 40, obviously!

Hariyama used Fake Out.
Venusaur lost 19% of its health.
GaRgAnt's Venusaur fainted.
(2-1)

(0%) v. (87%)

...Priority trumps all, Scizor versus Salamence, Venusaur versus Hariyama. I think I made my problem worse by giving it a Choice Band... At least it can't use Fake Out again. Set-up bait... And with Milotic gone...

Awesome, last poke, and I have full hp. This game is in the ba… what do you mean choice band prevents me from using that move? Shit…
---
GaRgAnt switched in Feraligatr (lvl 100 Feraligatr ?).

Nails switched in Mesprit (lvl 100 Mesprit).
Pointed stones dug into Mesprit.
Mesprit lost 12% of its health.

Feraligatr's speed was raised.
Mesprit's leftovers restored its health a little!
Mesprit restored 6% of its health.

Muahaha. Face Godzilla's little aquatic brother... Or at least Salamence's/Gyarados's/Dragonite's little brother.

You know what, screw this, one more DD is enough to seal the deal on Hariyama...

Cmon mesprit, wake up buddy! We need ya right now, use thunderbolt!
---
Feraligatr used Dragon Dance.
Feraligatr's attack was raised.
Feraligatr's speed was raised.
Mesprit is fast asleep!

It's here that I realized what I just did- I almost got killed for a bit more power. Time to stop pushing my luck.

---
Feraligatr used Waterfall.
Mesprit lost 34% of its health.
Nails's Mesprit fainted.
(1-1)

(100%) v. (0%)
(Asleep)

Well, good game, man. Hariyama might have base 144 HP, but it sure as hell can't take a +2 max attack Feraligatr and expect to live with that horrible defense.

Mesprit sleeps for 3 turns, and is koed. Hopefully Hariyama can tank a waterfall, because Choice banded Close Combat, adamant, 252 EV’s has got to ko… hopefully it gets the chance.
---
Nails switched in Hariyama (lvl 100 Hariyama ?).
Pointed stones dug into Hariyama.
Hariyama lost 6% of its health.

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

It's at this point that Nails tells me that his Hariyama actually had Guts.

GaRgAnt wins!

Did I just do that?

Feraligatr, I want to have your babies.

And so it ends, a dramatic finish. Hariyama with all the boosts imaginable (minus guts) still couldn’t ko. Good game GaRgAnt.

Props

• Skuntank, taking out 2 bulky pokes in the opening turns.
• Hariyama for taking out almost half his team.
• A lack of crithax outside the first move, which didn’t change anything.
• GaRg for a great battle.

Slops

• All the misses (2 wow misses, 2 stone edge misses, and 1 sleep powder, all of which made things harder for me).
• Feraligatr for being so damn bulky!

Props
  • Blaziken, for wrecking stuff.
  • Spiritomb, whose luck was so bad that Will-o-Wisp missed two times. Yeah, I know, but...
  • Venusaur, for running through a third of his team with one 80% accurate move. Guess that was hax making up for it.
  • Feraligatr. Nuff said. I still want your babies.
  • NailsOU for being an awesome player, an awesome guy for letting me write this, and playing a great battle.
Slops
  • Milotic for doing nothing at all.
  • Me for not playing like an intelligent person in the first few turns.
  • Will-o-Wisp. Note that if any one of the one's I'd fired off had hit, I wouldn't have survived the last Close Combat since it had Guts. In other words, I suck for living off of the fact that it missed.

Looks like another regular match to me. Kind of what I expected before entering this topic. The ending was nicely done though, you suspense-manipulating son of a gun.

Actually, yes, but warstories are all about presentation. The comments, the battle, and the theme all have to be strong enough to feel more like a warstory than your average Pokemon battle. Otherwise, it's just a log with words. I just didn't think that Will-o-Wisp miss was a strong enough catch.

In the future, if you plan to make more of these, just flesh out the comments a little more. With more playing experience, you'll naturally have more to say than "ok whatever, ill do this" and you'll make the battles a little more exciting to read.

I haven't finished reading this yet, but you made a mistake with Skuntank's percentages, you didn't factor in the Life Orb recoil.

EDIT: 'Kay, just finished reading this. It wasn't great, but it was still decent. That ending was like "OH MY GOD, THE PAGE WON'T STOP SCROLLING", and just because of that, it made me lol.

That match should've ended in Nails' favor, If you had actually hit Hariyama with Will-O-Wisp, you'd have been screwed. Just for future refrence, if you see a Hariyama with Fake Out, you can assume with probably 90% accuracy that it has Guts.

^ Told ya I came back to UU after... 2 months? LoL

And to everyone here, I'll try to work on the commentary part that you guys told me. The part that SJCrew said about having an interesting battle, I'll have to work on that one.

This. There were quite a few misplays too, such as:

Milotic used Surf.
Skuntank lost 51% of its health.
Skuntank used Explosion.
Milotic lost 100% of its health.
GaRgAnt's Milotic fainted.
Obviously, you didn't know Skuntank could do that, while Flame Orb Milotic blows. Hax was terrible in this game. Otherwise, it's not a bad warstory, I've definitely read worse. 6/10

I don't think that the battle in and of itself was bad, but the lacking commentary detailing the decisions made this less interesting to read than I think it could have been.
still, it wasn't bad and I read through it without losing interest, 15/20.

A bit too much hax, a couple of misplays, and lacklustre comments.

However, it was interesting to see how the hax in the beginning saved him in the end. I also enjoyed the use of Skuntank in UU.

6.5/10

this was a pretty bad warstory. the only chance you had at winning was a ton of hax, which you got. four out of ten here.
