CAP 13 CAP 2 - Part 14 - Pokedex Entry Poll 2

Status
Not open for further replies.
We move ever forward to the end. This poll is a result of a four-way tie, and is intent on discerning which of the entries the users like the most. That is why this is an IRV poll following a MBV poll. Despite this unorthodox polling structure, I have no doubt that it is in the best interests of everyone involved!

I have listed every slated submission's author below in the order they placed in the previous poll. I've included a link to the corresponding final submission post next to each name via the arrow, but please do not include that in your vote.

This poll operates on the IRV standard, the details of which are outlined here. Be aware that order does matter in your votes! The first line is your favorite, the last line is your least favorite. A typical vote might look like the following:
Most Preferred
Second Most Preferred
Least Preferred

Any comments that the voter has would go below the votes in non-bold text. Bold text is used to determine what the user's votes are, so none of the supplementary text should be in bold.
Please post only your votes in this thread. Do not respond to other posts, or your posts will be moderated and you warned. If you feel compelled to say something in your own vote, you may still do so, but don't try to incite a discussion. Keep discussion to #cap.

This poll will be open for 24 hours.

Below is a detailed showing of the entrants' submissions in the order presented above. I've only quoted the relevant parts here, so check their final submission posts for more details.
Temperantia
Necturna, the Essence Pokemon

Black: A Pokemon said to be able to communicate with spirits. When in the location of a past tragedy, it weeps.
White: This Pokemon has the ability to speak to spirits. Necturna are said to have a harder time trusting the living than the dead.
Mos-Quitoxe
Necturna, the Channeler Pokemon

Black: Since it lacks photosynthetic pigments, it relies entirely on preying upon living things for nutrition.
White: Its mind is linked to the afterlife. As a result, some Necturna seem capable of calling spirits to their aid.
LouisCyphre
Necturna, the Morbid Pokémon

Black: This Pokemon has the ability to commune with those who have passed. It taps into ancestral wisdom this way.
White: Necturna is known to mourn others before they pass. This Pokemon is said to know the length of others' lifespans.
Birkal
Necturna, the Soul Eating Pokemon

Black: It can be heard chanting eerily during the night. It is rumored that it is communicating with the dead.
White: Necturna's jaws are capable of consuming both the body and the spirit of its prey.
Galladiator
Necturna, the Spirit Trap Pokemon

Black: It is rumored to be the spirit of an ancient forest guardian. It uses the vine on its head to channel its mystical powers.
White: Necturna lives in seclusion, far away from the outside world. It instantly forms a bond with the first human it meets.
Rising_Dusk
Necturna, the Forest Spirit Pokemon

Black: The vine that rests on Necturna's head serves as a conduit between it and the spirit world. It has a mind of its own.
White: Necturna will often embrace humans tenderly only to slowly devour them with their jaw-like bodies.
CAP 2 thus far:

Name: Necturna

Concept: Sketch Artist

Description: A Pokemon that learns Sketch, once, and everything that goes along with that.

Justification:

In terms of uniqueness, I think that few existing Pokemon can match DPP Smeargle, an otherwise laughably worthless Pokemon trolling OU with access to every trick in the book (or at least 4 of them) but also affecting the metagame greatly by becoming a top threat in the lead metagame. This Pokemon will borrow some of that uniqueness by learning the move Sketch and thus having access to ONE surprise/strategic/gutshot bonus move to supplement its pre-existing movepool. Being otherwise competently built (read: usable stats), this Poke could be a top threat or specialist for reasons we can't even predict yet.

Questions To Be Answered:

  • How will a Poke that has access to any one move out of all the moves in the game affect common battling tactics, namely prediction, scouting, and switching?
  • Which Sketch moves will become most common on this Poke's best sets? Does Sketchmon's success rely on hiding that secret Sketch move until just the right moment or can it succeed with predictably powerful moves like Spore, Spikes, Hurricane, Shell Smash, etc.?
  • Does this unique and powerful access to moves need to be counterbalanced elsewhere in the Pokemon's design? If so, then to what degree?
  • What kind of impact can Sketchmon have on teambuilding in terms of being able to patch holes with common utility moves like Rapid Spin or Toxic Spikes?
Explanation: The key here is that we have a lot of freedom to construct a unique Pokemon while staying within the confines of the concept. Typing, stats, abilities, and even most of the movepool are completely fair game so long as the Poke learns Sketch only once along the way and that we keep that in mind during previous steps. Now, this doesn't mean the CAP process will be directionless; Rising Dusk is pretty well organized and good at keeping discussions focused, and the concept itself has firm grounding in Smeargle's precedent. What's really being studied with this concept is movepool diversity and effectiveness, so it should have the most effect on the movepool process, where movepool creators will have to carefully balance their Sketchmon's actual movepool with the possibility of adding any one other move to the list. In terms of the metagame, there is no doubt in my mind that throwing a wildcard like this into the mix will strongly affect the metagame.
Focus: Bulky Offense
Typing: Grass / Ghost
Stats: 64 HP / 120 Atk / 100 Def / 85 SpA / 120 SpD / 81 Spe
Abilities: Forewarn / Telepathy (DW)
Movepool:
Primary Checks: Heatran, Jirachi, Skarmory, Hydreigon
Gender: Female

tl;dr: Quack! (EUREKA! WE MUST PERFORM AN EXPERIMENT!)

I voted as I did because I don't think we should be so afraid of darkness. I slated them because there are countless examples in real BW Pokemon of dark Pokedex entries, and countless efforts by those involved in CAP 2's flavor's development to make Necturna seem malevolent and dark. I think it also follows a very clear trend in BW Ghost-type Pokemon with the two other FWG Ghosts, Chandelure and Jellicent. One burns the spirit away and the other leads ships to be lost at sea. I'd like it if everyone else could see what I see, but well, when has that ever happened.. ;)

Good luck to all who have made it thus far!

No offense R_D but your use of "conduit" really throws me off of your entry, given that they were supposed to be in simple English. All six of these are excellent choices though!

Necturna is already plenty flavorful. We don't need a bunch of extra stuff about it being able to see the lifespans of others or its vine having a mind of its own or it being the spirit of an ancient forest guardian. I just want the Pokedex entry to cover the basic flavor of this Pokemon before adding a bunch of unnecessary extra. To be honest, there's at least one thing about every entry that I don't like, but I ordered them this way based on how much or how little I thought whatever they added distracted from what had already been established to be the most important and relevant aspects of the Pokemon's flavor.

/me is surprised submission made it through
I really like Louis' because, like mine, instead of going the "it eats souls and is dark and creepy, etc." route, it focuses more on Necturna's connection with life and death.
I like Galladiator's for the same reason as Louis', but also because it mentions Necturna's vine and its use. If I would've thought about it at the time, I would have liked to have mentioned it in mine.
Best of luck to everyone!

Darkness and macabre are all very well but they're the only thing I've come to expect at this point

None of these are ideal but any are acceptable I guess
