Chingling (Analysis)

[Overview]

Chingling is a fairly unique choice in the Little Cup tier. It has stats that are rather crummy, bar a passable Special Attack. It has an expansive defensive movepool, featuring such moves as Wish and Hypnosis (unlike the other bulky Levitating Psychics Bronzor and Baltoy), which are great on any team and rather hard to find. However, Chingling has little in the way of attacking and there are many other Psychic Pokemon that are more capable at sweeping than it is, limiting its roles to those of support.

[SET]
name: Utility
move 1: Hypnosis
move 2: Reflect
move 3: Light Screen
move 4: Psychic / Wish
item: Eviolite / Light Clay
nature: Bold / Calm
evs: 236 HP / 156 Def / 116 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

This is a basic utility set. Hypnosis is always great to have, as sleep can immobilize most foes as well as allowing other Pokemon on your team to set up more comfortably. Use Reflect or Light Screen depending on the Pokemon you're facing, judging on their using physical or special moves to soften blows to Chingling. The key factor is to make good use of your time whilst you have the dual screens up. Don't lollygag around with Chingling - switch to something that can set up with these barriers placed.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Chingling can use Wish over Psychic; although this change leaves it without any attacks, passing Wishes is a nice option to have. This also gives you more incentive to use Chingling over other Levitating Psychic-types like Bronzor and Baltoy, besides Hypnosis and less common weaknesses. If your team is solid in physical or special defense, you can slash Wish over Reflect or Light Screen and keep Psychic.

Then there are even more options. You could run Magic Coat, Recycle (and give it an Oran Berry instead of an Eviolite), Knock Off, or even Taunt. A Calm nature can be used for taking special hits better instead of physical ones. Chingling's vast defensive movepool can lead to a variety of interesting movesets, but most besides the one listed above are impractical.

[Other Options]

Chingling can stall with Toxic, Knock Off, Recover, and other such moves. However, it's not very sturdy and as such these kind of sets aren't very worthwhile. Heal Bell is a cool utility move that not many Pokemon get, so if your team has status trouble, stick it on. Chingling gets Curse and Last Resort, so you could run them on the same set and hit foes with a 140 Base Power off a +1 attack. Having a base attack stat of 30 makes this dubious at best, however. Charge Beam would be a pretty decent move except that Chingling probably isn't bulky enough to make it worthwhile. If you have faith in it taking a couple of hits, then Charge Beam can work. A Choice Specs set is usable but there are better Pokemon to do it with. The same goes for a Calm Mind set.

[Checks and Counters]

Steel-types laugh heartily at Chingling's offense. Both Dark- and Bug-types can wipe out Chingling in one hit with a STABed move, especially Pokemon like Sucker Punch Pawniard and Megahorn Karrablast. Pokemon that use Toxic will lay Chingling to waste if it's not using Heal Bell. Meanwhile, those with Insomnia can feel free to set up without fear of being immobilized by sleep.

Just some formatting things...put a space before and after the / always. Rename the 2nd set to like team support. You are using the incorrect format too. There is an announcement at the top of the forum that will show you how to format it.

Now onto the qc part.

1st set: I'm thinking HP fighting over hp fire. After a CM HP fighting should be doing enough damage to steels like ferroseed. Also you don't get raped by the likes of Houndour. Also mention what its special attack is after a CM. Also you should mention what ching has over other psychic types that can use CM.

2nd set: list when you should use it instead of other Pokemon.

magic coat is cool

so is heal bell

oran+recycle is too

and taunt

and toxic

and knock off

slash light clay on dual screens set

mention stored power on cm set

who says this thing doesn't have movepool?

attacking movepool is lacking but you're correct

The format has been updated too. If there isn't anything else, I'll write it up..

Chingling (M) @ Eviolite
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 236 HP / 236 Def / 36 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Psychic
- Icy Wind
- Recover
- Toxic / Hidden Power [Fighting]

Is actually pretty good since it beats most Meditite and Gligar, while Slowpoke loses to ThunderPunch Meditite and Elgyem loses to Gligar. I know cause I'm using it as a check to both on PO, where Misdreavus is banned. The CM set sucks, it shouldn't even be listed tbh. HP Fighting lets it not get completely walled to shit by Pawniard.

That set looks good, but I don't know about removing the Calm Mind set. Do you have any particular logs or proof it's so bad?

the question you should be asking first

do you have any particular logs or proof that it's good?

Elgyem has more points in every single stat, and solosis has like 40 more base spa for 20 less defense. Chingling has Levitate and Stored Power, but both are meh options when it's not weak to ground and Stored Power is both useless before a boost and worse than Psychic after one, since there's no way Chingling's getting enough calm minds to make it substantially better. Plus Gligar and Hippo shit on it anyway with Toxic and U-turn.

Needs DW section saying it doesn't get a DW ability

name: Chingling is credit to team
move 1: Hypnosis
move 2: Reflect
move 3: Light Screen
move 4: Psyshock/Thunder Wave/Trick Room/Wish
Slashitis. I'd remove TR and Thunder Wave. Both of them are options Chinchou just can't use, since once you've set up screens and TR'd, you only have 2 turns of the first screen, which becomes one turn after you switch to something else. Meanwhile, Thunder Wave is useless because you should be throwing out Hypnosis as a status, then screening and switching. Staying in to Thunder Wave is a waste of screen time and moveslot.

Also, Psychic over Psyshock, for more BP. Gligar's hit harder too, who is like the only Taunter who can't kill you in two hits.

And slash Light Clay.

Don't put brackets around Hidden Power Fighting.

Mention Missy in counters, Sub Missy laughs at Hypnosis and all of them 2hko with Shadow Ball.

Mention why you'd use the support set over other levitating Psychics like Baltoy and Bronzor, ie Hypnosis, no water/ice/fire weak, and Wish, which really should be listed first.

Mention Heal Bell and Toxic in OC!

EDIT: actually, we've discussed on irc and deemed the second set too situational. Misdreavus isn't banned on smogon, and it kind of outclasses Chingling in that regard. Remove please.

Great gadfrey I keep forgetting about this, maybe I should stop trying analyses oh well.

Anyway, Misdreavus, Gligar, and Meditite have all been banned, making the second set completely useless. So removed.

The first set has been edited.

I feel bad giving something with this wide of a movepool only one set, but I can't really think of anything else it can do something else can't do better.

Crux

Banned deucer.
God this is a terrible Pokemon. However, I dont think there is anything else it can do so....

This is a basic utility set. Hypnosis is always a great move to have because it puts opponents to sleep, immobilizing them and , as a sleep move, is always great to have, as it can immobilize near any dangerous foe as well as allowing other Pokemon on your team to set up more comfortably. Using Light Screen or Reflect depends on the opponent; Reflect softens the physical blows to Chingling, while Light Screen does the same for special moves. Use Reflect or Light Screen depending on the Pokemon you're facing, judging on their using physical or special moves to soften blows to Chingling.
