Drilbur

[Overview]

Drilbur is one of the premier sandstorm sweepers. Both of his abilities, Sand Rush and Sand Force, can be used for sweeping. Sand Rush doubles his Speed in a sandstorm, while Sand Force makes his STAB Earthquake as well as Rock Slide more powerful. Even without the Sand Rush boost Drilbur hits 17 Speed and outspeeds a lot of the metagame. Drilbur also has access to a wide physical movepool, and even has access to Swords Dance, which boosts his already impressive Attack. Once set up in a sandstorm, Drilbur can easily sweep due to having a wide variety of options.

[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Swords Dance
move 3: Shadow Claw
move 4: Return / Rock Slide
item: Life Orb
ability: Sand Rush
nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)
evs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 212 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

With good Attack and Speed stats, as well as access to Swords Dance, Drilbur is asking to be used as a sweeper. This set takes advantage of Sand Rush raising Drilbur's Speed. In a sandstorm with 212 EVs, it will reach 32 Speed, which outspeeds every single Pokemon, even those with a Choice Scarf. An Adamant nature is used to raise Attack because it doesn't need anymore Speed. After using Swords Dance and with 236 EVs, Drilbur hits 32 Attack. Earthquake is his obvious STAB attack. Shadow Claw is used to hit Misdreavus and Gastly, who are immune to Earthquake, for super effective damage. In the last slot, Return is favored for its power, although it gets no coverage. The extra EVs are thrown into Drilbur's Defense. Drilbur uses a Life Orb to boost his already insanely strong attacks.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Rock Slide can be used over Return to hit Flying-type Pokemon and have a chance to flinch an opponent, but it won't hit Gligar as hard. Being a sandstorm sweeper, Hippopotas is Drilbur's best partner as it sets up the permanent sandstorm. Drilbur appreciates entry hazard support. This makes Ferroseed a great partner because he can lay down both Stealth Rock and Spikes. It also resists Water- and Grass-type attacks, and has a high enough Special Defense to take Ice-type attacks as well. Even though Ferroseed is a great partner for Drilbur, he is also one of its biggest threats. It will wall Drilbur's attacks and can use Seed Bomb to hit for super effective damage or set up entry hazards. Scarf Magnemite is another good partner for Drilbur because he can remove Ferroseed, as well as Gligar, who also walls Drilbur.

[Other Options]

Sand Force is a viable option as it will raise the power of both Earthquake and Rock Slide. If Drilbur uses this ability, it should use a Jolly nature instead of Adamant so that it hits 17 Speed. Hidden Power Ice can be used to hit Gligar for super effective damage. Instead of putting the 36 extra EVs in Defense, they are put in Special Attack. A Rash nature also used so that the EVs are not counter-productive with the nature. Drilbut has a good movepool that he can work with. X-Scissor can be used to hit Grass-types. Brick Break can be used as well but Earthquake generally does more damage. Drilbur also has access to Rapid Spin, although its not very useful because its more of a defensively oriented move on an offensively oriented Pokemon.

[Checks and Counters]

The biggest counter that Drilbur has is Snover. When Snover switches in, it takes away the sandstorm that Drilbur needs for sweeping. Snover is also commonly Scarfed so it will outspeed Drilbur and OHKO with Blizzard. Gligar can switch into anything bar the very rare Hidden Power Ice and wall Drilbur all day long. Even boosted attacks won't do much to Gligar. Slowpoke can take hits pretty well and hit Drilbur with a super effective Surf or Scald. Koffing laughs at everything Drilbur can dish out and threatens it with Will-o-Wisp. Drilbur is also weak to priority attackers such as Meditite and Croagunk, and especially Carvanha.

[Dreamworld]

Mold Breaker isn't as good as either one of Drilbur's regular abilities. If Drilbur isn't running Sand Rush for the Speed boost, it is using Sand Force for the Earthquake and Rock Slide power boost. Mold Breaker isn't a bad ability, but it is outclassed by both of Drilbur's other abilities for sweeping.

Thanks for taking over this man, here is what I have tested and know that it works. Probably could use some fine-tuning as to not waste EVs in speed and such, but w/e.

Vulpix switches in on SD and laughs

use Return, not Frustration, that's what QC says

mention Rock Slide hits Flying-types SE, and those things resist EQ

sand power in OO

revenged by lots of priority users, like Carvanha, Croagunk, Meditite, Purtooga, aforementioned Snover, etc

Koffing WoWs it

Slowpoke lives a hit, kills with water (surf does 81.8% - 109.1%, 5/6% chance to kill with SR and LO recoil), and regenerate-switches out

Mention Ferroseed as an excellent Spiker in Sand-based teams due to resistance to Water and Grass, and how Spikes make a lot of 2HKOs into OHKOs (Slowpoke and Hippopotas for one).

Now that I think about it, though, seriously, a Sand Power set would be pretty damn badass. It's got 17 speed, which is enough to work, and Sand Power LO Earthquake hits damn hard, even without a boost. It could rip holes in bulky stuff like Tessy and Frillish for Sandshrew to kill stuff with (btw mention Sandshrew in AC it's cool)

For other teammates,

Dwebble sets hazards Drilbur loves, as does Ferroseed.

Water/Grass is resisted by Grasses, like Cottonee and Exeggcute. The former has Encore and Leech Seed, the latter Dual Screens and Leech Seed. Also, Dragons. Nuff said.

Water/Ice is resisted by Waters. Slowpoke/Frillish are dicks to Meditite and his Fighting pals, and Chinchou can actually kill waters, which is always nice.

Ice/Grass is resisted by Steels. Bronzor Dual Screens and SRs, Pawniard lures Fighting-types in and rapes them with spikes support, and Magnemite kills Waters and kills Ferroseed too. Also, Fire-types...uh. Darumakka hurts things with Flare Blitz. And Ponyta. And Growlithe.

So yeah.

EDIT: shit ninja'd...partially

I didn't add all of those type resistences but did mention a few of them. I'll add most of that in when I do the write up. Also, why does he need to weaken stuff for Sandshrew? I never see them on the same team, heck, i never see Sandshrew at all even.

He doesn't need to. It's just cool. Type-redundancy and stuff. One breaks ground-resists and bulky stuff, the other sweeps the weakened team. Sandshrew is a great SS poke, Sand Throw, SD, only a bit less attack the Drilbur for 45 more base defense, etc

...I guess Gligar would work too. I've seen lots of Gligar on Sandstorm teams.

I would give Sandshrew a VERY brief mention, it sucks tbh. Gligar does the backup sweeper thing better, and most of the time you won't even need it for that.

Don't alternate between ''he'' and ''it'' when you refer to Pokemon; use either one. Otherwise,
