Moves
========
- Hazards such as Spikes and Stealth Rock allow Ferrothorn to successfully pressure the opposing team by hazard chip when switching. Spikes is the most commonly used hazard on Ferrothorn, however, Stealth Rockis just a valuable as it is easily set up in one turn.
- Leech Seed is Ferrothorn’s only viable form of recovery and wears down opposing Pokemon’s HP, which is helpful late game.
- Power Whip is important for hitting trouble some water types such as Greninja,Arghonaut, Krillowat, and Tapu Fini.
- Knock Off is able to wear down switch-ins and remove Choice items, Leftovers, berries, and Life Orb.
- In conjunction with Ferrothorn’s poor speed, Gyro Ball becomes a great option when checking Fairy-types such as Tapu-Koko, Tapu Bulu, Kerfluffle, Mega Gardevoir, and Tapu Lele.
- Lastly,Protect is a solid option for morerecovery from Leech Seed and Leftovers. It helpsFerrothorn take on Mega Medicham or Mega Lopunny in order to avoid its High Jump Kick, lets Ferrothorn scout what moves choiced users are about to be locked into, scouts for possible Hidden Power Fire users, and lets it tank Z moveslike Landorus-T's Supersonic Skystrike
========
- A Maximum HP Investment and 208 Special Defense EVs assure that Ferrothorn will be able to survive a +3 Ice beam from Syclant as well as be able to be just barely be 3HKOd by Hurricane on offensive Tomohawk.
- The final 48 EVs are invested into Defense in order to improve its physical bulk.
- Leftovers is the best possible item to ensure Ferrothorn’s longevity throughout the match
- As an alternative item, Chople berry can be used to avoid being OHKO'd by super effective Fighting-type moves from the likes of Mega Alakazam, Mega Lopunny, Arghonaut, and Tapu Bulu.
- Lastly, Ferrothorn’s ability, Iron Barbs discourages physical attacks by causing chip damage, punishing U-turn and or Rapid Spin Users.
Usage Tips
========
- To preserve Ferrothorn's HP, switch it into moves that Ferrothorn resists such as Tapu Koko, Naviathan, and some choice locked Pokemon like Tapu Lele, Plasmanta, and Volkraken.
- Early game it is imperative to set up entry hazards with Ferrothorn in order to force pressure onto the opposing team.
- Leech Seed should be used to keep Ferrothorn healthy throughout the game as well as annoy opposing switch-ins that may try to KO Ferrothorn like Zapdos or Cyclohm
- Knock Off is also generally used to punish opposing switch ins by knocking off their item. It is best to use when Ferrothorn is able to force a switch.
- it is best to keep Ferrothorn as healthy as possible until hazard removers such as Tomohawk, Zapdos, Skarmory, Tapu Fini, and Colossoil are incredibly weakened or KOd. Only one layer of Spikes should be layed until the hazard removers have fainted, as it wastes turns to set up more. Once they have been worn down, three layers of Spikes should be layed to maximize chip damage.
========
- Ferrothorn is best paired with other hazard setters like Landorus-Therian, Toxapex, Fidgit, and Heatran to form a hazard stacking core which can create immense pressure against opposing teams and make it harder for them to switch.
- Landorus-Therian in particular pairs well with Ferrothorn as it checks Heatran, Mega Venusaur, and Tapu Bulu.
- Pokemon that can threaten common entry hazard removers like Tapu Fini and Tomohawk such as Greninja and Plasmanta are greatly appreciated. In return, Ferrothorn can provide these Pokemon with hazard support which makes it easier for these Pokemon to sweep.
- Pokemon that threaten Fire-types are also great partners such as Keldeo, Zygarde, Krillowatt, and Volkraken.Ferrothorn also appreciates Pokemon that are able to pivot in on Fire-type attacks for it like Rotom-Wash and Landorus-Therian. merge these together
- Ferrothorn can help provide support to wallbreakers and sweepers by removing certain items such as Assault Vest on Tangrowth, Choice Scarf on Excadrill, Eviolite on Chansey, and Leftovers on Tapu Fini, making it easier for the sweepers and wallbreakers to do their job.
- Ferrothorn has great defensive type synergy with the likes of Toxapex, Arghonaut, Tapu Fini, Mollux, and Pyroak. Together these Pokemon can form great defensive Fire / Water / Grass cores that are able to overcome a majority of the threats in the metagame.
- Ferrothorn fits extremely well on rain teams with common abusers such as Pelipper, Tomohawk, Mega Swampert, Tapu Koko, Ash Greninja, and Kingdra, as it's a sturdy check to Electric-type moves.Ferrothorn's Spikes helps rain sweepers pick up more OHKOes, while rain halves Ferrothorn's large weakness to Fire-type moves
Other Options
=============
- Stealth Rocks and Spikes may also be used on one set, but Ferrothorn can't set that many hazards effectively and Ferrothorn misses out on the utility of Knock Off or Leech Seed or ability to check Water-types with Power Whip.
- Instead of Leftovers, Rocky Helmet may also be used in order to discourage and wear down physical attackers even more. However, Leftovers is generally better becauseFerrothorn appreciates the passive recovery.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Fire-types and Pokemon with Fire-type coverage**: Volkraken, Mollux, Heatran, Volcarona, and Mega Charizard Y threaten Ferrothorn with their STAB moves. Pokemon with Hidden Power Fire coverage such as Mega Mawile, Tapu Lele, Mega Venusuar, Greninja, and Magearna can also check Ferrothorn . HoweverFerrothorn can chip opposing Fire-types with Stealth Rock and removetheir items when they switch in.
**Electric-types with Fire-type coverage**: Zapdos, Cyclohm, and Magnezone can deal massive damage to Ferrothorn with Fire-type coverage. Magnezone in particular can trap Ferrothorn with its ability, Magnet Pull, and easily 2HKO it with Hidden Power Fire. Ferrothorn, in return, can do nothing against Magnezone as it bruhses off both Knock Off and Power Whip.
**Mega Sableye**: Thanks to Mega Sableye’s ability, Magic Bounce, Ferrothorn is not able to set up entry hazards on it.Will-O-Wisp also hampers Ferrothorn's attack stat, making its move Power Whip less effective, and cancels Leftovers recovery.
**Grass-types**: Most Grass-types resist Ferrothorn's Power Whip, are slow enough to resist Gyro Ball and take no effect to Leech Seed. Mega Venusaur and Amoonguss in particular are the best counters to Ferrothorn as they don’t particularly care about Knock Off and can easily KO back with Hidden Power Fire.
**Fighting-types**: Pokemon such as Mega Lopunny, Mega Medicham, Revenankh, Voodoom and Kerfuffle threatenFerrothorn as their STAB moves can easily KO Ferrothorn.Ferrothorn can run Protectto have an easier time dealing with High Jump Kick users such as Mega Medicham and Mega Lopunny.
**Wallbreakers**: Pokemon such as Hoopa-Unbound, Garchomp, and Plasmanta can all overcome Ferrothorn’s bulk with super effective coverage or raw power
**Set-Up Sweepers**: Set-up sweepers such as SD Landorus-T, SD Fightinium Z Tapu Bulu, and Tail Glow Syclant can overload Ferrothorn with damage.
