I played it when I had ubuntu as my os two years ago, it was a fun game to play, but it got a bit boring after 2-3 songs.
to answer your question: you can't play the songs like you would play a normal mp3 or flac on audiosurf, frets on fire only plays a specific file type, there are places to download the songs from, but last time I played it was in 2007 and there weren't a lot of songs made for the game yet, and some of them were badly done. once you have the file type, you have to put it on the specific music folder (I don't remember the name of the folder, sorry)
