Gen VII: Pokémon Sun and Moon (New info Post #5834)

Well at least if there is a Z we know the closed-off power plant sections aren't gonna go to waste. Now there's plenty to stuff in there. Also kudos hydra for calling the name sources! ((damn that thing has an annoying face.))

Would Machiana be a better translation, then? I don't know how the translations work, but aren't they usually phonetic?

EDIT: random theory. The ruffs on the bottom of maggie's "dress" fold out into a full Pokeball shape, which mags then rides on like BB-8. #starwarscrossover #gen7dreams

I know it was posted on the previous page; but here it is again.

I assume at some point later in the day we will get some better detail images. It gives me huge mega Diancie vibes too, but it would be cool if this was some sort of Caretaker Pokemon? idk, Just interesting concept, and it seems like its related to Volcanion.

EDIT: Very confused by the Pokeball-esque dress it seems to be wearing. I didn't think they used Pokeballs back then?

Double Edit: I don't want anyone talking about a possible Gen 7 as of yet. As I posted before, several Pokemon have been released way before their gens were released. Munchlax and Bonsly was almost 18 months before they appeared in DP after they were shown in Pokemon XD. Let's keep calm.

Ugh, stir the pot Coro Coro. Do you need a spoon?

Something about the "pokeball" dress; if that is the motif, there have been giant stone Pokeballs in the anime from an ancient civilization before, we don't really know how far back Pokeballs go in the timeline before Sliph Co, Devon Corp, and the Kalos factory started mass-producing them.

It's the gear bonnet that I think is the nicest touch, because it reminds you of how long ago the inception of the gear really is.

I like the bonnet too. As a mech-Pokemon, I'm really interested to see how it's animated. Remember how Genesect could fold up and fly? I wonder if similar things apply here.
Are those dots on its face supposed to be a nose and mouth, though? They're annoying me. Almost offensively "adorable".

Nobody's mentioned possible Klink relations either, which I guess isn't too out there, but still.

Magiana? Cool looking robot bunny thing, also man-made like Golurk. Well this changes things...

GF have been puzzling me for quite a while ever since Pokemon Z was not revealed after Zygarde Complete was fully shown 5 months ago. While we have waited longer between games I don't think we have ever waited so long between a boxart legendary reveal and the announcement of a new game. Now instead of revealing new Megas /forms to imply Z is coming they show this guy which is quite significant. I know its common practice these days to show a new gen mon in a movie, but whats odd is that they show him when everybody has been waiting for around half a year (!) for confirmation of Z. I'm really starting to think Z is not coming at all (or if it is, not how we expect), simply because they are running out of time for then to bring out this game.

Think about it, the new movie will be coming out around July and they will want to release Z around this time to boost sales and advertisement. With a new Pokemon being revealed everyone will start to drift their thoughts from gen 6 to 7 so they got to squeeze in Z before gen 6 becomes old news. If they wait much longer and Z came out at the end of this year/2017 then people will start forgetting about Zygarde and instead focus on gen 7, which GF does not want and makes no common scene. So if there is no announcement of Z in the next 1-2 months its very likely that Z is not coming, unless its a gen 6.5.

What's most interesting is how central Magiana will be for the new movie. Its a robot Pokemon set in a mechanical city (where it was probably made there 500 years ago) around Kalos with the city name having strong connections to AZ. While Magiana is a brand new Pokemon in terms of lore its going to be central to gen 6, which makes me think the next game is going to be either a gen 6.5 or gen 7 with the possibility to visit Kalos like in gen 2. At the moment gen 6.5 seems the most logical. If they go for gen 7 then Zygarde gets left out and probably overshadowed by the new legends brought out. If they go for standard gen 6 (Z) then when gen 7 comes Magiana is going to be focused on a older generation instead of a new generation with its new region and lore. Given how GF interviews have said they don't want to do a gen 2 post game again gen 6.5 seems to be the most likely outcome from what we know.

I saw a video on Youtube where it said that Volcanion is a man made mon, similar to Mewtwo, where Team Flare engineered it. Seeing Magiana is very similar in an unnatural man made feel.

But, I do like design and am hoping Fairy/Steel. Steel/Psychic looks like an option too, but I am hoping that they do not go that way...

Awww, it's adorable. Humanoid Pokemon done right.
Hoping fairy/steel too.

Magiana is the correct translation, not Machiana.
Both Gi and Chi exist in Japanese, and this time, it is Gi.

It's going to be like Genesect and Mewtwo, calling it now. At least in the games, not the movies. While we have a few Pokemon with pokeballs on them, this one appears to be similar to a dreamball. My own theory right now is this will be a Diancie clone or variation. It's definitely man made, but this guy looks like instead of escaping and killing everyone it will just be their slave.

I feel kind of bad for Magiana. In this upcoming movie, they're going to cover disorder in the ecosystem on top of their favorite theme, nature-versus-civilization. This movie could be so great, but it's a shame that the movies have been drawn-out versions of the show for years, the whole thing is doomed to fizzle. And this adorable little robot girl has to be thrown in the crossfire.

I certainly think it looks like a maid.
I think the gear looks more like a maid's hat rather than a bonnet.

Well, this is a surprise to see just waking up. O_O

Don't really have anything to add that people didn't already say. I'll comment on a few things:

Name. I'm guessing the person on twitter that Hydrachomp mentioned is right with it being a combination of the Japanese word for "gear" and "machina". Now usually the translation team doesn't really touch the names of "debut"/Legendary Pokemon that much nowadays (Lucario, Zoroark, Jirachi, Manaphy, Shaymin, Victini, Diancie, Hoopa, Volcanion, etc.), at most maybe changing a few letters around so that its name makes sense in other languages. So I'm betting D_what is closer with its English name probably being "Machiana". Personally if they also want the "gear" somewhere in there I'd slightly change it more to be "Machinear" (also getting in a pun for "engineer" and maybe even "ear" in there), but as stated above they usually don't make that drastic name changes (last bit of Zoroark's name is believed to have come from "aku" which is Japanese for evil).

Appearance. At first glance I also thought "Robot Diancie" (with a bit of Lilligant) but looking closer I can see it has enough differences to make it its own thing (mind you I can't quite place my finger on what thing besides "robot"). One thing bothering me a little that I think it looks maybe a bit overdesigned, like I don't mind the bottom of it looking like a Pokeb Ball (though the Poke Ball itself looks to be a recent invention the sigil of it seems to have existed throughout the ages, take the Foongus family for example) but the pattern on the side and the overall design of the middle/chest makes it start feeling more like a Digimon (also the markings on the head). It's not too overdesigned and of course I'll get used to it, but I don't know, it doesn't feel quite like a Pokemon (though it is just a stock image, I'm sure once I see it in other poses and animated I'll feel different, just now it looks bizarre and out of place). Also not quite sure what the ears are for, like they look like they may combine but I don't know into what, like did the people who make it just give it rabbit ears "just cause"?

Type. Well definitely Steel. If there's a secondary typing I'd say Fairy BUT I don't want them to start spamming Fairy Legendaries at us like the did with Dragon. I'll be perfectly fine with this thing being pure Steel, it's man made afterall (I mean the Golett family has a reason the were part Ghost, but I'm getting a sort of steampunk feeling from Magiana and this next movie in general so I'd say a "mystical" typing like Fairy wouldn't fit the tone). Not that I would have a problem with Steel/Fairy either, but it would be then be sort of competing with Mawile (and Mega Mawile) and we honesty need more pure Steel-types (5 generations later and we only have 5 pure Steel-types: Registeel, Klink family, and Mega Aggron (who starts as a Steel/Rock type)). Also it would show not all cutesy, fairy-like Pokemon will get the Fairy-type which would be good for design practices as it means the artist won't be limited.

Role. DHR-107 brings up an interesting point in what its role is. I'm going to agree its probably a caretaker or I'm more willing to bet a groundskeeper of some sort, like at least in the movie its made to keep the gears of the steampunk city maintained. Wouldn't be surprised if its bottom portion opens up to reveal it stores extra gears. Also the red/blue meter thing catches my eye making me wonder if it has a role, like it uses it to keep a check on the condition of things (though how it works we'll have to see, like does it need to keep the colors balanced or is one color bad and another good?).

Legendary. Another issue I'm having with it is will it be a Legendary. It looks like a Legendary, and I'm not saying that just because its a new Pokemon. Unlike Lucario and Zoroark who look like natural creatures, this thing it too robotic and overdesigned to not be a Legendary. Like I can't really see going to a place, like a factory or something, and start running into these things left and right. It looks like a very specifically made Pokemon, like I can see it sort of being the queen (or if we're going to go by robot/technological terms, administrator/manager) of groups of the Klink family. Also the movie is sort of making me think this, unless Volcanion is chasing after a runaway one it sounds like there's only one. Though had the movie even said there was multiple I'd still think its probably a Legendary or really rare Pokemon who's locations will be VERY selective (if its a Legendary it won't have to worry about that quite as much thus the designer can design it anyway they like).

Pokemon Z. So yeah, usually a completely new Pokemon means next main series game is a new gen. HOWEVER, I would note that they have started some incompatibility issues (for lack of a better word) between versions with the ORAS Mega Pokemon (and Primals and their moves). It's one step off from just making a new Pokemon for the third version altogether, so maybe they decided to do it (or at least experiment with it)? Also it is taking a long time for Pokemon Z/XY2 to come out and it could be they don't want to wait until after it to start releasing new Pokemon (gotta keep that merchandise flowing). Of course, with that mindset they could have just decided to go "f*** it" and start advertising the next gen meaning Magiana may not be completely available in Z/XY2 (maybe mentioned and seen, but usable?). And if they do decide to skip Z/XY2... well I'd think it would probably be considered the most lackluster and if not most disappointing generation (barring the release of RS remakes). XY and the Kalos region really need a third version to flesh it out more (and if they're sequels maybe even pick up on some open ended plot threads), and to end it early would make it feel like Pokemon hit the polygon ceiling and used XY to get out their growing pains much to the region/gen's misfortune.

So yeah, those are my thoughts for now. Oh, and before anyone brings it up:

*Compares the two* NOPE! Not yet, try again.

Calling it now, Magiana is a 7th gen mon, and 7th gen's gonna be based in Britain, and you catch this thing inside Big Ben. Also, if it's a legendary, look at it's core, Orange and green-ish blue. The 2 primary colors of the 2 7th gen games?
If that's true I kind of would have preferred it to incorporate more clock-like feature, but hey I'm down for an England/London based region (though would it be too similar to the Kalos aside from the iconic locations?).

Orange and greenish-blue? Looks red and blue to me (watch this turn into a "the dress is gold & black/white & blue" argument).

But both Chi and Gi are existing alphabets in Japanese, and this time it's clearly Gi instead of Chi.
I think it comes from Magia (Latin for Magic, as used in many magical girl series.)

Yes, I read your post about that and sort of addressed it. Remember, it's all a translation issue.

In Japan, the name makes perfect sense for a mechanical being since its the Japanese way to pronounce gear and machina. But in English? When I see the name "Magiana" I don't think robot, I would think magic first. However I think they're trying to push the more mechanical side of it more (even if it is part Fairy and the "Magia" part is intentional) so for localization sake changing it to Machiana or something similar would get the idea of what it is across better. Yes, the pun is probably lost (though on those uneducated it Japanese language it was already), but when thinking of names for Pokemon you have to think in the mindset of the translation and marketing team.

Could "gi" be used in the Japanese pronounciation of Gear, making it magearana? (ma-gear, not mage-arana) I don't know what would happen to the R, though... doesn't that sometimes translate as L? So if it was gonna have gear in it even WITH gi it would have to be magirana or magilana. Which it isn't. Idk I'm gonna assume it really is Magiana but maybe the english releases get a slightly different name.

(addendum: I was pronouncing machiana as ma-ki-ana, as opposed to ma-chi-ana, since the former is how machina is pronounced. Dunno if that changes anything, ki (and not "chi") and gi (and not "ji") are probably different.)

Gear is possible.
The "r" in er/ ar/ or is usually replaced by "a" instead of L or R.
e.g. Monster is translated as Monsutaa, not Monsuteru.

In Japanese, "gear" is translated as "gia" (ギア)

Ki, chi and gi (and even "ji") all exist in Japanese.
So it's not Makiana.
In Magiana, G is pronounced as in gear, not pronounced as "ji".

obv gonna transform in some way, its ear thingies complete the pokeball sphere gown perfectly

My, this is certainly a game-changer. Well done, Pokémon.

This just caught everyone off guard. There is no way of telling where this will go, and I love it. Will this be Z, or the next generation? Will there be a Z? Who can say? But, I do recall Game Freak or some Pokémon employee saying in a B2W2 interview years ago that those games were the beginning of them trying and doing new things with generations and game releases. They said they were shaking up tradition.

Just food for thought.

As for Magiana, I like the design. Steampunk vibes. That'd be a sweet Pokémon region, btw. A freaking Steampunk Pokémon game would complete me. And Magiana sounds like a famous Italian actress.
