[SET]
Honedge @ Berry Juice / Eviolite
Ability: No Guard
Level: 5
EVs: 196 Atk / 36 Def / 220 SpD / 52 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Iron Head
- Sacred Sword / Close Combat
- Shadow Sneak
- Swords Dance
[SET COMMENTS]
Honedge benefits from having a trifecta of nice Ghost/Steel typing, above-average Attack and Defense, and STAB priority. Along with a Swords Dance boost, it can perform quite well as a late game cleaner. Iron Head and Shadow Sneak give Honedge pretty solid coverage, and serve as two effective STAB moves. Sacred Sword or Close Combat provide additional coverage to help clear out Normal- and Steel-type foes. The EV spread maximizes attack, yielding an impressive 18 with an Adamant nature to go along with 17 and 13 Defense and Special Defense, respectively. The remaining EVs are put into Speed, as there is nowhere else they can effectively go.
Owing to slow base speed and Steel-typing, Honedge enjoys teammates who can clear Fire- and Ground-type threats, such as Vulpix and Onix. Good choices are Wingull, Chinchou or any of the available effective Ground-types in the tier, such as Dugtrio or Trapinch. Vullaby is also a threat, so bringing an effective means to handle it will also aid Honedge's prospects for a late game sweep. Mareanie pairs well for this, as also provides Wish support. Since Honedge comes out of the box with low base speed, it can also function well on a Trick Room team. If using Honedge on a Trick Room team, use a Brave Nature and remove the speed EVs to be as effective as possible.
