is there a social forums disc right now? I thought it was just the main smogon discord. honestly i think it would make more sense to do this than joining w smorgon. i am not really in tune with who participates in what but my sense is that there is probably more overlap with social forums and circus than circus and org? makes sense to merge two forum based communities vs discord and forum based community? is there a desire for the other social forums to have a discord?
there's not an active general socialization server at the moment, but discussions about that have existed
we're gonna maintain a separate circus maximus server regardless of whether or not this winds up happening though, because the reality is that even though it might be nice to have a general socialization discord, there's a stark difference between the purpose of a few of the forums in this subforum and they are their own subcommunities in a sense. someone who's looking to join a circus maximus server might not want the exposure to the rest of the socialization subforum for example. communities like bbp, forum mafia, etc might have some player overlap here and there but their respective userbases are much different, broadly speaking. as far as desire to have a general socialization discord goes, i think that's something some staff have been attempting to gauge and that'll ultimately be fuel for the decision to make or not make one

to make my preference clear, i think just a straight up 'smogon mafia' server might be best because the community that participates there is clearly at least somewhat distinct to other communities

IMO a broadchurch socialisation server would be bad, Cong and Firebot have like 0 userbase overlap, mainly because the two pulls of each subforum are completely different. Circus has about a half and half of people likelier to participate in Cong or Firebot so you could argue we're the bridge, but we're not actively bridging anything rn and I don't see much sense is trying to force us to. BBP is its own thing entirely.
Merging with SmORGon makes sense, because mafia and ORGs are the two category of games we do on this site (basically, also Walrus which has its own server entirely). There is semi-significant player overlap there, due to the nature of ORGs being application-based that overlap is never gonna be that consistent, but a lost of ORG players started out playing mafia and then their communities tried ORGs out (exactly what happened here) so mafia being publicised in the ORG server and people giving it a shot is probably the only benefit, but it's not like there are any detriments to it.

it already exists, but has 0 activity, hence the merger in the first place
i just don't really understand this, cong has 0 overlap with smogoff? so smogoff users don't read books, play video games, or follow sports? cong users (which let's be real is also relatively inactive) don't make jokes or create funny threads? dave mods both cong and smogoff?
remember that this technically isn't just a "mafia" subforum but "forum games," which was spun off from the original firebot in the first place.
i hear you though. i don't have any actual solutions and I'm a purely forum user so idk what the discord scene is like anways. it's a tough sell regardless of what happens. why start playing mafia on smogon vs MU?
I am entering the discussion. Re: dead chats it's a good idea surface level but perms get kind of messy then with who's setting things up, who can see where easier to make mistakes, lots of clog etc when you put everything in one server (it's just way easier to handle games in a separate game specific server).
I get what you're saying about mafia forums, as someone whos played on many sites, but I think you're downplaying the benefits of a site like smogon. A lot of veterans refuse to play on sites like mu, because it's 1) insanely tryhard 2) you're playing with different people each game 3) you're a small fish in a big pond rather than big fish small pond. On a site like smogon, you get to play with people repeatedly and hopefully be friends or at least comfortable with each other, obviously this doesn't always work out, but a lot of people much prefer playing on their homesite to going off into the dark on a super big site where you'll never have the same playerlist twice, and find it difficult to stick out in the crowd ever socially.
Personally for me, I feel like merging social has been done before and no one actually crossed over for the final year(s). The communities are very separate and I feel like such a server, I'd be surprised if any of the mafia community ended up even using it.
One of my main goals for a server is the create a space where newer mafia players can enmesh themselves into the community easier between games, on a more casual level. I think when you start to scale things up, everything becomes less intimate and people are also less likely to get involved at all, like how none of us really use the main smogon discord.
