Makin' it Rain: UU Rain discussion

I don't have any logs for Gardevoir, but i used it yesterday, and:

-It traced Swift Swim against Gorebyss and used Thunderbolt. A Scarf Venusaur switched in.
I forgot about Swift Swim and switched(though a Psychic isn't going to KO Venusaur). It used Sleep Powder on whatever i switched.
-Thanks to the sleep i let Kabutops get a Swords Dance. But in the team i had Quagsire, so no problem.
-Ludicolo then took a Toxic and KOed one of my pokes.
-Gardevoir again switched in against the Ludicolo at low health and KOed everyone with Thunderbolt+Psychic.
-Venusaur tried to take a full health Gardevoir with a Scarfed Leaf Storm, but Gardevoir is only 3HKOed even with no EVS on HP or special defense.

That happened 2 times(since i battled with the same person twice... though i let Gardy take the sleep because i wasn't aware of the rain ending... lucky me it woke up right after).

The set i used is attack minded:

Gardevoir@Leftovers
252 sp atk/252 spd/6 hp
Timid

Psychic
Thunderbolt
Will-o-Wisp
Focus Blast

It serves me as a strong special attacker that can burn things and Trace some nice abilities. It serves as a good RD counter IF you don't switch on any boosted Surf.

Have you considered Reflect instead of WoW on that Gardevoir? WoW has a chance to miss and doesn't have any effect on Subs, whereas Reflect has neither of those problems. It also temporarily helps your team against physical attackers that may come in shortly afterwards.

Also, Psychic should OHKO 56 HP Venusaur around half the time, but with Expert Belt you can guarantee it without losing health, whilst having a better chance of killing bulkier versions, and powering up all your attacks against certain opponents. If Leftovers is important then ignore this, but you say the set is offensive minded so I don't see much use for the Lefties. Encore might be useful too for taking on Hail teams and checking SubPunchers / Cursers etc, probably over Focus Blast if anything.

See the set posted toward the end of the last page. I think it has a superior EV spread, and outlines what Gardy is surviving and killing. I think Encore should be the primary option in the 4th slot, with Reflect/Will-O-Wisp rounding it out. It's really preference, but good Encore users that outspeed Swift Swimmers in Rain (thanks to Trace) are tough to come by.. and really screw them up.

Definatley want Will O Wisp on that, mainly because Toxicroak carries sucker punch.

Those numbers are impressive, even without any Special Attack EVs, Gardevoir can hurt things. Just wondering why you would have 252 SpD Evs when you are outspeeding Omastar in the rain anyways (unless you wanted to switch directly into Omastar, to trace his ability). Without any Special Defense EV's, what are the calculations of Ludicolos LO surf in the rain?
Most Toxicroak will use either Sub or SD/NP first turn, which means that unless it uses a Speed-boosting nature, Gardevoir will outspeed and be able to Encore it. If it uses Sucker Punch, you Encore it anyways and can always use something else to set up.

Modest Ludicolo's LO Surf in the rain:
306 Atk vs 329 Def & 291 HP (95 Base Power): 186 - 219 (63.92% - 75.26%)

Timid Ludicolo's LO Surf in the rain:
279 Atk vs 329 Def & 291 HP (95 Base Power): 168 - 198 (57.73% - 68.04%)

So it's a 2HKO regardless, which is why I said that Gardevoir can't really just switch in willy-nilly into every RD sweeper. She can really only do so on Gorebyss, Omastar, and Qwilfish using SD. She more of a revenge killer.

Gardy can't get the 2hko on Ludiculo with psychic? Well, with no EV's I suppose not. It's too bad because Signal beam really isn't that useful for anything else. If Gardevoir is going to revenge pokes why does she need to take a surf from Omatsar. Could those SpD EV's be shifted to Spa allowing her to run lefties?

The set mm87 posted is good for taking on pokes in rain but I see her usefulness limited outside of it.

Consider the usefulness outside of Rain Dance thouguh. Psychics and Dark types switching into her don't care about Psychic, and many can shrug off Thunderbolts. Signal Beam is her best defense.

Gardevoir @ Expert Belt
Nature: Timid
Ability: Trace
56 HP / 252 SDEF / 200 SPE
- Psychic
- Thunderbolt
- Signal Beam
- Encore/Will-o-Wisp/filler
Actually, using your concept, I developed a better EV spread by tinkering with the damage calcuator:

208 HP / 100 SpD / 200 Spe
(note, the Timid nature was kept the same)

Some example damage calcs:

LO Modest Omastar in the Rain using Surf

vs. your spread

361 Atk vs 329 Def & 291 HP (95 Base Power): 217 - 256 (74.57% - 87.97%)

vs. the new spread

361 Atk vs 291 Def & 329 HP (95 Base Power): 246 - 289 (74.77% - 87.84%)

LO Adamant Kabutops' Aqua Jet in the Rain

vs. your spread

361 Atk vs 166 Def & 291 HP (40 Base Power): 183 - 216 (62.89% - 74.23%)

vs. the new spread

361 Atk vs 166 Def & 329 HP (40 Base Power): 183 - 216 (55.62% - 65.65%)

LO Modest Ludicolo Surf
in the Rain

vs. your spread

306 Atk vs 329 Def & 291 HP (95 Base Power): 186 - 219 (63.92% - 75.26%)

vs. the new spread

306 Atk vs 291 Def & 329 HP (95 Base Power): 207 - 244 (62.92% - 74.16%)

----

In conclusion, when it comes to a defensive Gardevoir set, HP EVs should always come before other defensive EVs. This spread is not only taking special hits a little bit better, it's taking physical hits a lot better thanks to the higher HP than your spread.

Thanks for the spread, Bologo. It is really more effective that way.

I think that, with this spread(not the attack minded one i posted) Gardy needs Wish as a filler since it will work as a poke that can take some special attacks and provide some support for your teammates outside of RD teams(and it can keep Gardevoir alive against some special attackers too).

The extra physical bulk on the more efficient spread is also useful against Dugtrio, who can come in on a predicted Encore and take you out with Sucker Punch, or just come in for a revenge kill (or even on Thunderbolt) if Encore has previously been used. A Jolly Life Orb variant stands a good chance of OHKOing the first spread after SR damage, but Bologo's spread will always survive, although still has a chance of being caught out by the odd Choice Bander.

Ones that run WoW or Reflect can deal with Dugtrio much more easily, but if not running one of those moves, the extra bulk can be crucial.

Consider the usefulness outside of Rain Dance thouguh. Psychics and Dark types switching into her don't care about Psychic, and many can shrug off Thunderbolts. Signal Beam is her best defense.
I see your point. I would never leave her in against a dark type though because they will kill her before she kills them. Alot of psychic types will just subject her to status or setup for a sweeper so while it may be a useful attack for a switch in I'd rather have something like wish so a check/counter comes in unharmed or taunt so the psychic/dark can't set up.

@Bologo: Awesome, didn't think about increasing her HP first. I'll keep that fact in mind.

@EvilMario: To be honest, Signal Beam really isn't going to be that useful outside of Rain. Honchkrow, Drapion, Houndoom, and Spiritomb are all neutral to Signal Beam, so it would be better to Thunderbolt (although switching out is probably better). Umbreon lols at all but the strongest special attacks as well. Aside from Absol, the others are too rare.

You can use it to hit pure Grass-types, though, which makes it a decent Sunny Day team check as well, hitting Tangrowth and Shiftry for SE damage (have to watch out for Sucker Punch on Shiftry though) and being able to Trace Arcanine's Intimidate or Flash Fire to force it to use its weaker Extremespeed. You also outspeed Scarf Typhlosion if you grab Chlorophyll, so you can weaken it before it uses Eruption.

Switching over from main topic...

Twist of Fate: Ok then, I'll just use Shedinja to stop rain dance teams because although it's not common, it walls half of your so called 'overpowered sweepers'.
Seriously dude, get your shit straight. You cannot rely on what statistics tell you. They are insightful but do not dictate what a person can or cannot use. Your Shedinja comment does have merit, in that it can 'beat' a majority of rain members, but then it goes back to 'impractical' checks/ counters as Shedinja literally has little to no use against any other team.

Please, this game is based on statistics and numbers, don't try and validate yourself with other random BS, or we'll never ever get any policies enacted properly.
To be perfectly honest, it is rather interesting that a person such as yourself has a suspect tester badge and yet most of your comments have been full of ridicule and lots of bs. You make me question the integrity of a Suspect Badge holder.

A RD team needs to be well prepared like other teams. It's no use to slap 5 pokes+Electrode in and think you can easily win.

I'm saying that because i just fought a RD team with a whole 5 Swift Swimmers in it(Kabutops, Ludicolo, Gorebyss, Omastar and Qwilfish), and i used a single poke:Gardevoir.
Results: Gardy Thunderbolted everything to death. 2HKOed Ludicolo with Psychic while Surf failed to KO Gardevoir.
There's no need to post any logs, because the match was that straightforward.

RD teams, as powerful as it may be, are still teams. You need to think the team up before doing so, or else you're going to lose many matches that you should be the winner.

No well built RD team will ever lose to Gardevoir. People think team building in rain is like team building in Hyper Offense, but it's not really. It's more like team building in Offensive Balance/Bulky Offense, where you have multiple offensive Pokemon with a couple of defensive pivots. Just because there are a lot of shitty rain teams running around doesn't mean you'll win against good ones.

That's my point.
That you need to think on a well built RD team.
That throwing 5 pokes and expect to win, even if it's a RD team(which should work) means you're likely to lose some matches that a well built RD team wouldn't.
For example, Gardevoir isn't getting past Lanturn anytime soon. Without Shadow Ball, it's walled by Uxie. Without Focus Blast, Registeel walls it. And it goes on...

My point is that even RD teams needs thought. Don't expect to win a lot by slapping 5 pokes together. That's what lots of people do.

Constructing a Rain team isn't too tough, and they don't actually vary too much.

Choose

3-4 Rain Sweepers from [Kabutops, Ludicolo, Qwilfish, Gorebyss, Omastar]
1 Fast Rain Setup from [Ambipom, Electrode, Raikou, Froslass]
1-2 Rain Bulky Setup from [Uxie, Registeel, Cresselia, Altaria]

Of course some Rain teams will be unorthodox and run other Rain sweepers... Huntail/Floatzel or other setup... Lanturn/Claydol or a late game cleaner... Swellow.. but these Rain teams are rare.

Switching over from main topic...

It was you after all that said you should prepare for those Pokemon that are not less used, 'nonthreats' as you called them. And now you're going back on your own point? Telling me to get my shit straight? Hmm, quite hypocritical.

Um, but they tell you what to be prepared for, and chances are that you will see shit that's high on the usage stats more than other stuff, so yes they do have an important merit. Granted you are free to use whatever you like, but they are highly used for a reason (because they are good obviously). If anything you mentioned in the rain thread was so godly, those Pokemon and that playstyle would be used more, its common sense. That hasn't been shown as clearly as of yet.

To be perfectly honest, it is rather interesting that a person such as yourself has a suspect tester badge and yet most of your comments have been full of ridicule and lots of bs. You make me question the integrity of a Suspect Badge holder.
Lol another idiot that takes this to a personal attack. It's really funny that saying 'guys you should have more concrete evidence to back up your claims rather than simple anecdotes' merits you to call me out on a badge that I take pride in having. Maybe the reason I have this badge and you don't is because I've gone through the process multiple times and know what makes up a good argument versus what isn't a good one; apparently trying to help you validate your arguments isn't welcome. Well then, good luck trying to prove your shitty argument.

If you have a better way of offensively stopping Rain without sacrificing half your team I would like to hear it.
The point is, even if you sacrifice half your team to beat the Rain team 1-0, it is definitely worth it.

I've tested on the ladder with my rain team extensively, and most of the people who frequently post in this section have played against me or watched me play against others. I'd like to hear some of their opinions regarding whether rain is broken or not, since that'll be more accurate and credible than my own opinions. Edit to avoid double post: In two days of intermittent playing with just my rain team, I've gotten a 1600+ CRE on one of my accounts. Just throwing that out there too.

Broken. Simple as that. From our match, an experienced player with rain is a deadly combo, applying so much offensive pressure that styles of teams between balance and heavy offense don't really stand any chance of either a) defending the original 8 turns of rain. or b) successfully stop a second round being set up. From our match, even Absol SP couldnt knock off ludicolo, so priority just doesnt cut it. Same experience with Teifu.

I conducted several matches with you FlareBlitz and although I am not that bad player you really smashed my team equipped with even such good answers to rain such as Lanturn and Mantine and SunnyBeamSubPetaya Charizard. I am not sad that I am forced to use Mantine to stand any chance against rain since it has great synergy with Steelix who is on my all teams (sorry regi, you're not that useful for my purposes), however I must agree with Smurf., this style of play is becoming a hegemony we all have to fear, especially when held in skilled hands.
