[OVERVIEW]

Even with access to Spikes, Maractus struggles to find a niche over other Grass-types with Spikes like Roselia and Cacturne. Roselia has a much higher defensive presence, while Cacturne has a much higher offensive presence, and both having secondary typings. Even when used as a lead, Maractus's stats bar its Special Attack are mediocre, most notably its Speed, which means it often can only set up one layer of Spikes before being KOed. Furthermore, other common leads like Qwilfish and Froslass can Taunt Maractus and stop it from setting up Spikes at all, or they can be removed later in the game by the abundance of entry hazard removers like Skuntank, many of which beat Maractus in a matchup, which essentially negates its one goal.

[SET COMMENTS]

Maractus is meant to set up Spikes at the beginning of the game. Its one niche over other Grass-types and common leads is in Endeavor, which works well alongside Sucker Punch and Focus Sash. However, due to Maractus's low Speed, it is difficult to pull off while also managing to set up Spikes, so it rarely works out. Because of this and various other reasons, you're much better off using other Grass-type Spikes setters like Roselia and Cacturne.
