ORAS Monotype Role Compendium

(thanks Acast for the banner!)

The idea of this thread is to provide a visual list of what Pokémon does what for each type in the ORAS Monotype metagame. This will help new and experienced players alike in finding Pokémon that fit their teams when looking for specific roles, as well as help players build more diverse teams by not always using the same Pokémon to fill the same role. Each Pokemon that are on here are on here based on their viability in the Monotype and their performance of generic or specific (niche, if you will) roles that benefit your team. If you feel there is a Pokemon viable for the roles mentioned below and it hasn't been added to the group, recommend it in your post. (Note: work in progress)

Um, why is Azu not in setup sweepers?

Because it fills both roles, one of a setup sweeper in Belly Drum and a huge Wallbreaker with Huge Power.
But that doesn't explain why you wouldn't just list it in both roles. Example would be Tyranitar in Dark where it's listed as a rocker and other setup (Dragon Dance). One would expect Azu to be done similarly, or at least it appears we would.

On a side note, I'm interested in helping a bit with the fighting section. I wasn't too sure on some spots (namely pivots and trappers), so I left them empty/sparse for someone with more experience. I also wasn't too sure how "viable" a set would have to be. For example, Hitmontop is our hazard removal but is rarely used, Lucario and Terrakion CAN get +2 speed but that's also very rare, and Terrakion can set rocks but that's not what it's usually used for.

Here are my recommendations.

Um.. Heraross Mega is completely and utterly countered by Skarmory, Breloom can work because of spore+rock tomb but Heracross is totally countered by skarm and outsped and ohkoed by a good amount of other flying types, its basically saying u can add Cobalion because it gets stone edge.

Thanks a bunch, actually! I forgot to mention that since I am pretty busy other people can help me with the role compendium as long as they create a convo with me or post it here. I'll be sure to add this and edit it if needed be.
By the way, avoid one-liners when telling me to add something to the role compendium, they just create clutter :P. You can pm me on main or post on my wall for something to be added. (Note: or post a bunch at one time :))

mega heracross 2HKOs Skarm and outspeeds and nearly 1HKOs Zapdos and Togekiss with Rock Blast. It also2HKOs Gliscor with Bullet Seed. It's a pretty good wallbreaker imo

252 Atk Mega Heracross Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 145-172 (43.4 - 51.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Welp. That does so much more than i thought it would but still the odds that it 2Ohkoes are pretty low and ur assumig its rocky helemet over lefties. :p

Most run Adamant to 1HKO Slowbro, and you don't need Jolly to outspeed Flying's walls.

252+ Atk Mega Heracross Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 160-189 (47.9 - 56.5%) -- 85.9% chance to 2HKO (Assuming Helm) and I lied, it 1HKOs standard Zapdos and Togekiss

252+ Atk Mega Heracross Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Togekiss: 410-490 (109.6 - 131%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Mega Heracross Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Zapdos: 450-540 (117.4 - 140.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

It also 2HKOs Gliscor with Bullet Seed, and it'll win eventually because it becomes super effective if Gliscor Roosts.

Also, I'll do Flying for the role compendium

If I'm missing anything, just put it in or tell me. One thing I'm not too sure about is if Zapdos / Togekiss would be an Ice check. It technically is, because it can tank a move and threaten it out, but its typing doesn't make it neutral.

Added all but Rhydon, and Rock Polish Rhyperior. Both are honestly not fast enough for rock polish to be very viable. As for Gliscor, ik about that, that's why it's (*). It's not 100% terrible though, because you can still take advantage of Acrobatics w/o TO, so I'm gonna leave that 1 be. Otherwise, thanks a bunch! :)

Quick check-in, thanks a bunch guys! You saved me a bunch of work but remember that the compendium follows the monotype viability ranking system so if your mon isn't at least Rank "E" do not include it please!!

To reserve a type, pm me on main "laxuy" or reserve it by posting here. (When you finish typing it up replace your reserved area with it.) And also, you can get the "BB Code" from my original message so it saves you time with the formatting.

Added flying&psychic, will add ground

Mega-steelix isn't an offensive pivot. Also, based on the rest of those classifications it should be a Grass type check due to the Steel typing.

I'd consider Seismitoad and Mamoswine defensive pivots. You switch them in to take water and ice attacks, respectivly, not to gain momentum off forced switches.

Zygarde isn't a defensive pivot.

Seismitoad and Gastro should fall under Ice-type checks. Freeze Dry isn't common enough to exclude them.

Just remove Gliscor from hazard removal. We shouldn't be promoting a bad set just to Defog when the entire team carries a rock resistance and another 'mon (Flygon) does the same task better.

I more than likely missed a few Pokemon on this list. So just let me know what else to add/omit!

On another note, Normal, Poison, and Dragon are missing from the list of compendiums. Not sure if that was because someone else had formally reserved them or something.

Gonna agree on all but the zygarde notion. People do actually run sp defensive sets on it, and make it a parashuffler, s lo for the time being I think I'll keep it there. As for mega steelix that is debatable. Under sandstorm it is pretty strong, and can threaten certain mons on switch in.

Thinking about it if anything, mamo can fall under both ctagories, while it is pretty strong with amazing offensive stabs, and usually good fighting coverage with superpower, thanks to thick fat it can very easily switch into ice attacks.

Otherwise thanks a bunch!

Also ArkenCiel add Diancie as a suicide lead, and under set up sweepers I would maybe include a cat a gory for Trick room, which diancie and mega garde can set up.

Edit: I don't rly think seismi and Gastro are ice checks, yea they're neutral to the type, but they don't really do a lot to it back either, other than maybe toxic stall, so I'm gonna leave that be as well since that falls more so under a defensive pivot in general.

Gastrodon is definitely an Ice check, it can switch into Kyurem-B's special set and hard wall it with a spD spread, and with a mixed or Def spread it can do the same for Mamoswine & Weavile. It can also switch in and wall pretty much every single non-STAB Ice Beam or Ice Punch.

As for Seismitoad it's a little unclear because it doensn't have recovery like Gastrodon so it can't "wall" anything, and on top of this all it can do back is fish for a burn. I would still include it as an Ice check though because it can switch into special Kyurem-B and force it out, and also switch in to most non-STAB Ice Beams and Ice Punches.

Ahh, suicide lead Diancie. Yeah, that was a little sketchy for me to decide on. The notable differences between Diancie and Carbink are the differences in Atk and SpA and Sturdy as an ability, much more fitting for a suicide lead. Carbink can run Mental Herb to set up TR or SR then explode AND not worry about dying in most cases with Sturdy, whereas Diancie will have to worry about either getting KO'd without Sash/Sturdy or being Taunted without Mental Herb. I'll think about it some more before I add it.

As for Trick Room sweeping, you have a point, but it doesn't really conform with the definition of "set up" sweeping by way of boosting your stats. The change would also have to be implemented on other types like Psychic or Ghost, but if it's not recognized there, I don't think Fairy should make that an exception.

How about Mega-Diancie and Mega-Gardevoir for Wallbreakers? Both hit ridiculously hard on both spectrums with STAB high base power moves. I've always thought of Mega-Gardevoir as a premier Wallbreaker in OU and Mega-Diancie certainly wallbreaks as well.

For the Priority section, I would include Klefki and Whimsicott, who both abuse Prankster for priority paralysis and other goodies (I do note that the Grass Priority section didn't list Whimsicott though). It's not traditional priority, but technically it should fit.

Speaking of whom, I believe Whimsicott should be a Stallbreaker. Using 4 of Encore/Leech Seed/Substitute/Stun Spore/Moonblast should be an annoyance for stall teams who have to rely on alternative strategies to take this guy down.

Also, while it is pretty bad and low ranked, I would consider Granbull for steel-type check. It doesn't resist steel moves but does come with intimidate (Although be careful with Bisharp), decent bulk, and access to both EQ and Fire Punch. Adamant Excadrill has 0.4% to 2HKO with Iron Head, and gets 2HKO'd by either Fire Punch or Earthquake. +2 252+ Atk Mega Scizor never OHKOs (Notably with reflect, Granbull can live 2 Bullet Punches to 2HKO with Fire Punch if given a free switch in somehow). This is kinda a stretch but figured I'd share my thoughts; I don't feel that strongly about Granbull.

1.) Agreed and added.
2.) Prankster is actually why I decided to hold off on adding both Pokemon under "priority." After looking at Grass, where Whimsicott should be listed under priority, I took that as confirmation that priority only referred to attacks. Sableye under Dark is listed under priority, but I don't know if that's referring to Prankster or SPunch/Sneak. I'll add it for now until someone corrects me otherwise.
3.) I'd have to hold off on Whimsicott as a stallbreaker. It's never beaten a stall team for me, just propagated stall.
4.) I can definitely add Granbull as a Steel check, though I'd never advise it.
