Official NBA 2012-13 Season Thread

Welp. That was a competitive game for the most part. Turnovers & rebounding just absolutely killed us, this is where the Lakers miss Jordan Hill & Pau the most.

And Lebron. Damn.

Oh I have no problem with trash talking, etc. provided there is a legitimate argument at the heart of it. When it degenerates into two users simply slinging insults back and forth at each other and there isn't any debate going on, it's no longer contributing to the thread. I've seen things get pretty heated but still stay intelligent (like when you and I used to butt heads all the time in the football thread).
I agree wholeheartedly.

Is Durant a better scorer than Lebron? Maybe a better FT shooter, but I'm willing to bet Lebron probably has a better true shooting percentage than Durant does. He's shooting at 55%, anyone know Durants?
I have accepted the fact that LeBron is a better overall player than Durant, and that Durant will never reach James' level, but offensively? Let's see.

In this year, it's pretty hard to determine who's the better offensive player. In TS%, Durant wins, while in eFG%, James wins. Agree that Durant scores many points in the FT which I believe upped his TS%.

It's easy to ignore however that LeBron is 28 and on his prime, compared to Durant. Looking back to LeBron at 24:

Both offensive efficiency numbers are easily won by Durant. LeBron's offensive numbers at age 24 are still great, but Durant's are better in any way.

But yeah, the overall game is still won by LeBron, which is easily shown by his PER over Durant.

The Spurs are basically making a push for greatest sports franchise in human history...has any team ever been a 60% winner for over 20 years straight? Probably an unfair comparison because in baseball rates that high are fairly unsustainable in particular, but jeeeesus. Spurs have done 61%+ for 16 straight years, 57%+ for 23/24 years, and 70% 10/15 of the last years. I do not know enough about cricket or world-football to know if there are comparably dominant stretches there.

I only do my annual jizzfest because they just beat the Nets by 25 on the road from a game state where they were down 46-41 or something like that early on.

There are actually probably a ton of examples in European and world soccer - off the top of my head, Manchester United have won 12 of the past 20 Premier League titles without once finishing lowering than 3rd in that stretch. But soccer is a little different in that the league structure is much less "socialist" - which is to say, success tends to beget riches which then beget more and more success, which is why so many leagues are dominated by a few historically big teams. That the Spurs have managed to be so consistently dominant and dominantly consistent in a league with salary cap restrictions and drafts based inversely on success - while being in a relatively small market - is an incredible achievement.

Kobe has more assists than FG attempts and only scores 4 points on 1 basket... talk about a bizarro game. I think he's forcing the issue in proving to everyone he can be a distributor instead of a scorer, or else the absence of Gasol is really hurting this team that much, I can't decide.

Utah's bench played well tonight. Also, on the Suns vs. Lakers game, I thought it was a pretty...weird game. Kobe with only 4 points with Lakers 9 points in the 3rd Quarter. To be honest, I think Kobe should turn away from this play maker style he is playing with and shoot more shots. I mean, it's working in a way, but Kobe is much more threatening when he is drilling shots. Just look back at the game they had against the Celtics, dude was making scary shots. It's his teammates that didn't execute that game.

Barbosa out for the season....wtf

3 of the top 10 Celtics are now gone for the season, Rondo, Sullinger, Barbosa...

fuck it, sign Iverson

Players I used to like that are now arrogant whiners: Dwayne Wade
Seriously, what happened to this guy?
Nothing happened to him. You got more mature. :D

I'm skeptical Iverson would do much of anything now. He's like 37 right? I don't think his body would hold up against the other guards in the NBA. Plus, he doesn't pass and KG would kill him for that. This has been a really shitty season for the C's, Lakers, and Wolves as far as injuries go. If the C's are so desperate I'd rather them have Delonte West. West can play defense at least.

This season feels like the longest wait for a Heat/Thunder repeat... Which I can't see ending anymore disappointing than last year's finals. Lebron only got better and the East doesn't look that much stronger than it did last year. I mean, the Knicks have a slight chance of beating the Heat but that's if they can avoid meeting the Bulls.

Also, as of now the MVP race isn't a discussion. Lebron beats Durant hands down. The only way he would lose is if votes got tired of voting for him. Given this is his best offensive season ever.... That doesn't seem likely.

Everyone likes to think this can't happen, but it's exactly how MJ got screwed in '92-'93 when he was at his absolute peak... and Barkley won it instead. Total and complete bullshit but everyone was like, "MJ has already won it twice, so even though he's hands down the best player on the planet, we're going to give it to Charles instead"
It's utter nonsense, but remember James was screwed out of the MVP two years ago as well when everyone was still pissed at him and Rose got it instead. I'm not saying Rose wasn't deserving of the aware, but Kobe Lebron was MORE deserving

That's why I hate this MVP thing 'coz it's so subjective that even the likes of Bill Simmon gets to vote. Yep, hands down, LeBron is the MVP of the first half of the season. 2 weeks ago, it was close, but after that LeBron run, he definitely wins it.

And to think of it, it would be very amazing for somebody to beat LeBron at his peak. So, I don't count it this year for Durant at age 24.

EDIT: Take note however that KD still leads the Win Shares over LeBron by a game (12.9 vs 11.9), which is one of the best tools to use in determining the most "valuable" player in the league.

Sheesh Durant is flying around and no fouls (they were weak but lets face it... Refs call a lot of stuff). Thank god he's ok. Wouldn't be able to watch the nba without him

Ugh Thunder. They play with too much emotion for their own good. Everyone is trying to be a hero. The reffing is atrocious btw. On both sides

Dubulous

I look just like Buddy Holly.

LeBron is simply amazing. I was joking around on IRC that he was having a bad game (he was 4/8 shooting) and then literally seconds later he went on that crazy run. Except it's not crazy since he's done it for two weeks already...

Damn lol. Was really hoping for a comeback but it seemed like every time OKC was close Lebron made an amazing jumpshot.

Time to watch the Lakers get stomped again

Yeah so far this game is amusing. What was it. 15-0 to start?

Howard nonexistent. He just looks so small as a Laker. No presence whatsoever.
