Contrary Sweeper (Serperior) @ Leftovers
Ability: Contrary
Tera Type: Ground / Fire / Rock
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Timid Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Tera Blast
- Glare
- Substitute / Dragon Pulse
Serperior's good Speed tier and access to Contrary makes it a good late-game cleaner that can overwhelm teams. Terastalizing and using Tera Blast can turn the tables on opposing Pokemon that take little damage from Leaf Storm, such as Volcarona and Heatran. Glare allows Serperior to maintain Speed control and weaken opposing foes to either set up on its own using Leaf Storm, or allow a teammate to set up instead. Glare is also unique in the fact that it can paralyze even Ground types. Substitute is another viable alternative which can be used to force threats such as Dragapult, Darkrai and Iron Valiant to accept paralysis if they want to break Serperior's Substitute, in addition to the benefit of scouting out the opponents moves as well as allowing Serperior to set up safely . Dragon Pulse is a solid coverage option that hits much of the tier for at least neutral damage, and gives Serperior a super-effective option against prevalent Dragon types such as Dragapult and Dragonite. Max Speed is used to outrun a plethora of OU threats and 252 EVs in Special Attack lets Serperior hit as hard as possible. Leftovers gives Serperior extra longevity, and allows it to create more substitutes over the course of a game. Tera Fire Tera Blast can be used to check common OU Pokemon such as Meowscarada, Rillaboom, Weavile, Skarmory and Corviknight, and Tera Rock can be used to check Volcarona and Weavile. Tera Ground Tera Blast allows Serperior to hit the likes of non Air Balloon Gholdengo, Heatran and Raging Bolt for super-effective damage.
Serperior fits best on offensive teams who require some form of Speed control, as well as a versatile cleaner that has sweeping potential. Serperior greatly benefits from offensive hazard setters such as Glimmora and Samurott-H on its side. This allows it to OHKO the likes of Raging Bolt after stealth rock using Tera Ground Tera Blast at +2. Deoxys-S is a good teammate as it can be an extremely fast dual screens setter in addition to its ability to set up hazards, enabling Serperior to set up with ease. Ribombee is also a good teammate as it can set up Sticky Web, enabling Serperior to outspeed all but Heavy-Duty Boots Pokemon and opposing Serperior. Raging Bolt is another good teammate, who overcomes Serperior's weakness in terms of immediate offensive pressure, and appreciates Serperior's ability to pivot in and force out Ground-types. Corviknight also has good synergy with Serperior, as it can check Weavile as well as safely pivot Serperior in with U-turn. Wallbreakers who benefit from speed control such as Raging Bolt, Gouging Fire, and Kyurem appreciate Serperior's ability to paralyze faster threats such as Dragapult, Darkrai, Zamazenta, and Choice Scarf Enamorus. The combination of Kyurem, Serperior and Slowking-G is an excellent core. Slowking-G’s Chilly Reception can be extremely useful against sun, and the rare rain teams, on top of the snow making Kyurem much harder to take out thanks to the Defense boost. Chilly Reception can also be used to get Kyurem and Serperior in safely, and both of them can force out the Ground types that threaten Slowking-G. Furthermore, Serperior’s capability to pivot in and force out physically defensive walls such as Great Tusk, Gliscor, Alomomola, and Dondozo, is quite valued, creating an opportunity for physical wallbreakers like Roaring Moon, Dragonite and Gouging Fire to set up and then potentially sweep. Serperior struggles against Roaring Moon, who can either use it as setup fodder, or just take it out, so a pokemon like Landorus-T is quite a good teammate, as it can switch in, lower Roaring Moon’s Attack with Intimidate, and can U-Turn to pivot. Landorus-T can also set up Stealth Rock. Serperior becomes toast when faced with Kyurem's good coverage and immense power, even more so against Choice Specs Kyurem. Air Balloon Gholdengo can check Choice Specs variants of Kyurem, while also helping to preserve the hazards that Serperior works well with thanks to its ability. Additionally, Iron Valiant is an option that can revenge kill Kyurem, and is a powerful offensive threat in its own right. Weavile is another potent threat to Serperior due to STAB Triple Axel which can OHKO Serperior, even potentially through Substitute, making Kingambit a great teammate choice for Serperior. Kingambit can also take care of many problems for Serperior such as Ninetales-A, and its powerful Sucker Punch can revenge kill a variety of threats. Kingambit is also extremely potent against Galarian Slowking, who is a huge check to Serperior, as it completely walls Serperior barring Tera ground Tera Blast. Corviknight and Skarmory are more checks to non Tera fire Serperior, so teammates like Volcarona are good choices.
