Shiftry

-----------

Status: Done with skeleton?

[Overview]

  • Solid attack stat of 100 and a decent sp.atk stat of 90
  • A solid special and physical movepool along with access to Growth, Nasty plot, and Swords Dance
  • Has the ability Chlorophyll to boost his already acceptable speed.
  • Paper thin defenses and bad defensive typing
[Set]
name: Physical sunny sweeper
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Seed Bomb
move 3: Nature Power
move 4: Rock Slide/Explosion
item: Life Orb
ability: Chlorophyll
nature: Adamant
evs: 252atk/252spe/4hp

Set Comments

  • After a Swords Dance seed bomb and Earthquake (from nature Power) can dish out some massive damage
  • Explosion is a great last resort move. after swords dance it pretty much goes back to it's original power from 4th gen. though you can opt for Rock Slide for various Flying types instead of having to go suicide
Additional Comments

  • Come in on Bulky Waters or Slow ground types. more often than not they'll switch out which lets you get in a growth/swords dance.
Teammates & Counters

  • Erufuun or Jumpluff are ideal for bringing up the sun. and of course Drought Ninetales when it gets realesed.
  • Other Weather summoners will be a bit of pain. Luckily he resists pursuit
  • Salamence is a great partner to soak up bug attacks and fire off boosted Fire Blasts under the sun.
  • Skarmory. if you don't run HP fire Skarmory will be a huge pain causing you to switch out more often than not.
[SET]
name: lead
move 1: Sucker punch
move 2: Fake out
move 3: Explosion
move 4: Ankle Sweep
item: Focus Sash
ability: Early Bird
nature: jolly
evs: 252 atk/252spe/4hp

Set Comments

  • Fake Out and Explosion is for the most part. Unique to Shiftry and a few others
  • Sucker Punch is a great surprise to many pokemon such as Shandera who would otherwise stop this set cold
  • Ankle Sweep is great if the opponent decides to switch. you get to slow them down.
Additional Comments

  • Early Bird is the preffered ability to wake up and surprise sleeper leads liek Darkrai
Teamates and Counters

  • If you don't catch Doryuzzu on the switch with Ankle Sweep he can easily dispose of you. Same goes for most steel types.
  • Once again Salamence is great for soaking up bug attacks and easily getting rid of Shiftry's counters
  • Faster Fake out leads cause a problem. like Infernape
  • Erufun can lock you into Fake out! and so can plenty of other encore users. watch out
[Team Options]

  • Jumpluff or Erufuun are a most for any Shiftry set pretty much. Except the lead one
  • Salamence can soak up Shiftry's weaknesses.
  • While not needed rapid spin support is great as you don't want a weakened Shiftry

[Optional Changes]

  • You can run Brick break as an option for a decent fighting attack.
  • HP fire is invaluable against Skarmorey so you could always replace whichever move you find the least useful
[Counters]

  • Most Steels can wall you with ease if you don't run HP fire or a fighting move.
  • Bronzong creates massive problems for any set.
  • other weather summoners can rain on your parade
  • watch for priority on your paper thin defenses.
[Dream World]

  • Shiftry can come into bulky waters take a water type attack if you predict right. with a bulb he absorbs the hit and if they decide to change he can boost a stat and possibly steal the opponents item when they make contact with him
  • Wicked-thief is pretty unreliable as you won't always steal the item.

Where are [Team Options], [Optional Changes], and [Counters]? That's a good half of the skeleton that's missing.

Couldn't Trickery be used on the first set? It's nice 95 base power along with STAB can really help Shiftry out against physical sweepers.

It could run Trickery. I'll put that as an option but it's pretty unreliable imo. You're not always gonna be up against a strong physical attacker and sometimes it's just a waste of a moveslot. There's usually much better options you could go with.

Put in Sucker Punch somewhere because that's awesome for OHKOing Mewtwo without any Swords Dance.

[*]Come in on Bulky Waters or Slow ground types. more often than not they'll switch out which lets you get in a growth/swords dance.
The only bulky water and slow Ground-type you will find in Ubers are Kyogre, Manaphy and Groudon. You cannot KO Groudon with any move on this set while Fire Punch will turn Shiftry into a roasted tree. Kyogre changes weather and he outspeeds you with the Scarf set or speedy variants. Ice Beam will smash Shiftry to bits. Manaphy can KO you with Ice Beam. Shiftry cannot set up on any of those unless you are daring enough to risk it.1

Erufuun or Jumpluff are ideal for bringing up the sun. and of course Drought Ninetales when it gets realesed.
Both of them suck in bringing up sun at least in Ubers, not bulky and weak. Hello, we have Groudon here in Ubers, and he is bulky, powerful, reliable and brings eternal sunlight. Oh, Drought Ninetales IS released.

Other Weather summoners will be a bit of pain. Luckily he resists pursuit
[*]Salamence is a great partner to soak up bug attacks and fire off boosted Fire Blasts under the sun.
[*]Skarmory. if you don't run HP fire Skarmory will be a huge pain causing you to switch out more often than not.
All of the weather summoners will give Shiftry some trouble although Tyranitar will not enjoy a Nature Power to the face. Salamence is extremely rare in Ubers at the moment. Replace it with Rayquaza or Reshiram. Rayquaza doesn't get a boosted Fire Blast in sun but who needs it when you have base 150 offenses. Reshiram blows past anything not named Kyogre, Ho-Oh or Chansey.

[SET]
name: lead
move 1: Sucker punch
move 2: Fake out
move 3: Explosion
move 4: Ankle Sweep
item: Focus Sash
ability: Early Bird
nature: jolly
evs: 252 atk/252spe/4hp
Are you sure this set works well? The main lead in Ubers now is Forretress and he doens't mind setting up all 5 layers on you. Fake Out is to break Sash? Deoxys-S doesn't even mind Sucker Punch because it will lay down every hazard it wants. Ankle Sweep for Dialga? You barely scratch it while Fire Blast will turn Shiftry into a roasted tree. Explosion is OK but it still tickles Dialga, Forretress and Groudon, especially after the nerf.

[*]Sucker Punch is a great surprise to many pokemon such as Shandera who would otherwise stop this set cold
[*]Ankle Sweep is great if the opponent decides to switch. you get to slow them down.
Shandera doens't show up in Ubers without Shadow Tag. Darkrai Sleeps you first so you never get to Ankle Sweep it.

Early Bird is the preffered ability to wake up and surprise sleeper leads liek Darkrai
[/LIST]
Even if you wake up early, Darkrai can just OHKO you with Focus Blast.

  • Erufun can lock you into Fake out! and so can plenty of other encore users. watch out

  • Whimsicott cannot touch you at all since Shiftry is immune to Leech Seed. Excadrill needs X-Scissor to dispose you while Shiftry can actually Ankle Sweep it.

Salamence once again is almost extinct in Ubers now so remove it for Giratina, Reshiram and Rayquaza to soak up bug attacks.

    • Most Steels can wall you with ease if you don't run HP fire or a fighting move.
    • Bronzong creates massive problems for any set.
    • other weather summoners can rain on your parade
    • watch for priority on your paper thin defenses.

    • You are missing a lot of counters. Ho-Oh, Giratina, Reshiram, Rayquaza, a lot of Arceus formes, Kyogre due to weather change, Lugia, Reflects and Whirlwinds or Ice Beam you to death. Terrakion outspeeds you in sun if you are not Jolly. Arceus's Extremespeed brings you down easily. There are some other counters but I am not listing it here until you fix the analysis to a Ubers centric one. You didn't mention a single Uber in your analysis.
