Poster of the Month
I’ve been playing with my team for a while now. It fared very well throughout the early days of Latias being in OU but has been somewhat lacking as of late. I don’t know if it’s the metagame changing or me, but I’m yet to sit down and try to tweak the team, I just like it too much.

B-Run's Team:

After a bad string of annoying losses the night before from some poor choices and some extremely poorly timed hax, I got up the next morning and decided to play a few matches. Won most, lost a few. I decided to do one more before hitting the shower and heading out to work. Little did I know that I was going to be in for a LOOOONG match… However, it was one of the most intense and enjoyable matches I’ve ever played. This was an extremely close match with minor hax riddled throughout, though all within acceptable statistical range of occurrence. Despite hax, it was an extremely well-played game by both players.

Rules:
  • Ladder Match,

The combat log looks like this.
My comments look like this.

Leftovers and Sandstorm will be omitted.

TTS sent out Jirachi (lvl 100 Jirachi).
B-Run sent out Kingdra (lvl 100 Kingdra ?).

I see a lot of Jirachi leads, they are 99% of the time trick-scarf leads, which is fine… my Kingdra likes having a scarf just fine. Instead of opting to Yawn (which gets completely screwed by trick as they obtain my Lum Berry) or DD, the easy choice is to attack.

TTS switched in Machamp (lvl 100 Machamp ?).

Machamp… Machamp gives my team a LOT of trouble as both of my normal late game sweepers are easily 1HKOed by him and neither can 1HKO first. Kingdra is expendable. I always opt to just pound into Machamp to take him down to revenge killing range.

That just sucks. Not only did I fail to KO, but Machamp is toting rest. Meaning I could be in for a long fight if I don’t pull something good out now. There’s no reason to leave a scarfed Kingdra in now. I used to switch Latias in here until Machamp started regularly carrying Payback. I think about pulling out Heatran now, knowing he can 2HKO, but figured he would switch out and wanted to save him for later in the game when there are less pokemon for him to switch to. So instead I bring in Swampert to stealth rock and whittle down Machamp again.

Machamp wakes up this turn. If I can’t switch in anyone safely, then I stay in, do some damage and hope for Ice beam hax. I have an Earthquake/Ice Beam/Stealth rock/Roar mixpert and I love it to death. So many Salamence and Gliscor switch in on EQ or get roared in and stay to be ice beamed. Anyway, if I can get Machamp frozen or roar with him at low health then I can deal with him at my leisure.

I was hoping to Roar 1 turn before he was going to rest, making it easy to kill him later with anyone other than Swampert. In hindsight, I might have been able to switch Heatran in on a payback and scare him out with about half health. But oh well. I don’t know whether what kind of Blissey this is, whether T-Wave or Toxic, but I know that if it’s T-Wave he won’t use it on Swampert, and if its Toxic, it won’t work on Scizor. So its time for a switch.

I chose Heatran because he’s good at applying pressure and getting key kills mid game. With choice specs I know I can dish out a ton of hurt. But with Porygon2 tracing Flash Fire and the surprising bulkiness of porygon before, I stop for a minute to contemplate my next move. I look over what I know of TTS’s team and decide that Heatran isn’t going to be critical and Porygon2 will always be a major hinderance to him and possibly others. I believe TTS chose rest here because Scarfpert was faster and knew he couldn’t let me have a free switch into Latias after KOing Swampert with Machamp at 50% health. Good move TTS. Now I need to make a switch. My best bet is to get some heavy damage in while he’s asleep and KO before he can rest again. Instead of boring you all with the next huge portion of the match, I’m going to give you my basic strategy at this point. I know I can still do some damage by using Calm Mind. I know paralysis is inevitable at this point and I hope the paralyze hax don’t work against me more than they should. I Ought to be able to Calm Mind up, keeping my health high with Recover.

The beginning of this exchange begins with me alternating between Calm Mind and Recover. Later we exchange hits a few times, both recovering/softboiling as need be. After that whole thing, my Swampert, who normally would have been slower than Blissey with his –speed nature, outspeeds Blissey and deals the last 15% for the win. I can say that is the only time in my shoddybattle career that Swampert has been the only pokemon left after a victory.

This was an amazing game. So many things had to be perfectly balanced in order to keep from getting behind. TTS managed to completely screw up my normal strategy and cripple some very useful pokemon. Without each of my pokemon doing the exact job that they did, I’m not sure I would have won this battle. A few minor changes to either of our game would have severely changed the outcome. Great job TTS.

The match itself was phenomenal in my opinion, and the comments were pretty good as well. Overall I enjoyed it a lot and hope that you stick around and post some more good battles.

Drat. Not investing much in speed for Scizor doesn’t hurt me often, but here I could have really used that Superpower. Scizor goes down and I go to Latias, who I should have switched in 2 turns ago.
Minor nitpick: You were paralyzed so he would have outsped you even if you ran max speed jolly.

Haha, ScarfPert. Very good game, awesome battle, the comments were as it needed to be, good, while explaining the situation. Awesome job with this Warstory.

And assuming you are new here (post count and join date) i would like to say... Welcome to Smogon ^_^

That was a very fun read, thank you. Welcome to smogon, and just so you know, I'm expecting more warstories from you in the future =).

Yea, I noticed that right after I posted. I was like... "wait..."

ive got a login under "B-Run" that I've had for a long time, I've read a lot, never posted. And when i finally went to do it, I couldn't post. I guess when I signed up I never did some email verification or something... I dunno. But I had to make a new one to do this. So even though that was my first post, I'm only a new poster, not a new student of smogon. Been battling off and on for probably a year, maybe a little longer.

Thanks for the comments!

I like how it proves that if a slow Pokemon is Tricked an unwanted Scarf, it doesn't automatically make it nearly useless like I had thought earlier. Good warstory.

The battle was pretty good. The predictions were great too, but were offset by the misplays. =/ It wouldn't hurt to minimize the Blissey v. Latias stall either, especially since they were commentless. The comments were patchy, but they were sufficient, well thought out and written.

Overall, good warstory.

Scizor was paralyzed. Speed investment would not have helped you at all.

I share your frustation! When a Machamp gets me down like that, I get really pissed and start doing crazy shit that pays off!

Pretty good battle, insightful comments. Well deserving of the 5 stars.

Also, here's a Rotom-h icon if you want it:

I don't know... Even after this experience, I'd still consider my swampert being scarfed "near useless". I've had it happen to me a number of times now on switches, and most of the time I use him for fodder or roar once I've got scarf. It really does severely limit its usefulness, just don't make a needless sacrifice unless it serves some strategic point. I think it just happened to work out this time.

lol TTS

It's a good story. The waterfall luck on jirachi mattered because he was probably SRing when you flinched him. TTS would've won if he got the rocks down.
